Book excerpt: Richard Stukk is a full-time English professor at the College of the Living Dead (otherwise known as Copequa Community College) and a part-time private eye. Born a curmudgeon and raised paranoid in New York City, he now finds himself with an overly needy house, an overly sensitive wife, and an overly used red pen. For extra cash, he becomes a suburban Sherlock taking on house-burgling landscapers, neighbor-shadowing neighbors, motorhead Gen-X druggies, and a corrupt county councilman who has got himself missing, if not murdered. All this, while fending off a cop brother-in-law, a petulant mower, and a hot colleague with her commas and curves in all the right places. Not to mention, working towards his ultimate goal-to bring down the mysterious and licentious Professor Rex Bonet (aka "King Bone"), the Moriarity of the English Department. Assaulted? Confused? So is he. Only you're just reading this and he's Stukk in the Burbs. Download or read book Ongoingness written by Sarah Manguso and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2015-03-03 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[Manguso] has written the memoir we didn’t realize we needed.” —The New Yorker In Ongoingness, Sarah Manguso continues to define the contours of the contemporary essay. In it, she confronts a meticulous diary that she has kept for twenty-five years. “I wanted to end each day with a record of everything that had ever happened,” she explains. But this simple statement belies a terror that she might forget something, that she might miss something important. Maintaining that diary, now eight hundred thousand words, had become, until recently, a kind of spiritual practice. Then Manguso became pregnant and had a child, and these two Copernican events generated an amnesia that put her into a different relationship with the need to document herself amid ongoing time. Ongoingness is a spare, meditative work that stands in stark contrast to the volubility of the diary—it is a haunting account of mortality and impermanence, of how we struggle to find clarity in the chaos of time that rushes around and over and through us. “Bold, elegant, and honest . . . Ongoingness reads variously as an addict’s testimony, a confession, a celebration, an elegy.” —The Paris Review “Manguso captures the central challenge of memory, of attentiveness to life . . . A spectacularly and unsummarizably rewarding read.” —Maria Popova, Brain Pickings
Download or read book Fell of Dark written by Patrick Downes and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book that challenges the word "powerful" and obliterates it Written in searing prose, this is the story of two boys: Erik, who performs miracles, and Thorn, who hears voices. The book chronicles their lives as their minds devolve into hallucinations, and shows the way their worlds intersect, culminating in a final stand-off. This debut novel offer a raw, insightful look at the forces that compel us to act against our will. Even more so, it captivates and dares us to look away, knowing full well we can't. Praise for FELL OF DARK: * "Downes brilliantly plays with language and metaphor, and explores the dualities of sanity/insanity, beauty/ugliness, voice/voicelessness in a chilling echo of real incidents of school violence. A stunning debut novel that offers sophisticated readers a glimpse into the psychological disintegration of two distinct characters."--Kirkus Reviews *STARRED* * "For many readers, this will be an impersonal but impressive work of literary art. But for some, serendipity will strike, whether in an image or in a confused, despairing reaction to an incomprehensible world, and Downes’s vision will connect into an epiphany."--Publishers Weekly *STARRED* * "Readers willing to sink into the depths of two unstrung teens and their frantic individual struggles to understand the cruelties and redemptions of the universe will be rewarded by this disarming, thought-provoking, and entrancing story."--Booklist *STARRED* "Readers who are up for a literary challenge will find this dual narrative provocative, beautiful, and deeply sad."--BCCB “Here is a book built of darkness and gleam, of raw emotion and shattering poetry, of harrowing compulsions and zero compromise. Patrick Downes possesses blazing, beautiful, terrifying talent. His characters walk the shadows. His language bursts like sky.”—Beth Kephart, National Book Award nominee and author of Small Damages “Luminous and pure. A masterwork of astonishing authority and beauty.”—Julie Berry, author of All the Truth That’s In Me

Exotic yet universal in the narration and description of events and characters, the novel is a showcase of the songs of innocence and experience revisited by a Chinese boy.

Download or read book In a Nutshell written by Tudor Moise and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2013-06-25 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book tells a tale on how legends are created out of thin air. A quiet town on a quiet summer day knows great upheaval when the news of a potentially fatal epidemic reaches its citizens. It is in fact only a propaganda plot gone wrong, complicated by a real death that is not part of the scenario, and from that point on everything goes topsy-turvy, despite the authorities' efforts to re-establish peace and order. The vortex does not spare even the most venerable institutions, and the different religious denominations are caught in the contest of getting the upper hand. There is a prize for it - a brand new martyr that will mark a point of major glory for the winning church. On this background, and like a mirror of the general state of distress, the propaganda plot's author, the Scribe, lives the dissolution of his own personal life when making the wrong choice based on pure lust. In the end there is redemption, both for the city and the protagonist. Yet is it indeed the final chapter in this tumultuous and ever-recurrent story?
Download or read book Schorjun written by Errol Rollins and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-10-17 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are much highly charged moments where emotions soar and tension rises in the fictional, private learning institution. Situations become belligerent where fear and anxiety grip many. Both adults and the young become overwhelmed by antagonistic outbursts. It had become perennial with no end in sight. There are occasions when staff attempt to resolve the antagonism but attempts were ineffective. It seems a malaise with a need for leadership change to bring order and normalcy quickly but that appears evasive and the situation was definitely affecting the morale of many. It was a challenge operating in such a corrosive environment which ought to have been one condusive to the growth and development of the mind, intellect and body of the youth but that was elusive to a large extent.

Download or read book Jaguars Tomb written by Angélica Gorodischer and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-15 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jaguars' Tomb is a novel in three parts, written by three interconnected characters. Part one, "Hidden Variables" by María Celina Igarzábal, is narrated by Bruno Seguer. Seguer in turn is the author of the second part, "Recounting from Zero" ("Contar desde zero"), in which Evelynne Harrington, author of the third, is a central character. Harrington, finally, is the author of "Uncertainty" ("La incertidumbre"), whose protagonist is the dying Igarzábal. Each of the three parts revolves around the octagonal room that is alternately the jaguars' tomb, the central space of the torture center, and the heart of an abandoned house that hides an adulterous affair. The novel, by Argentine author Angélica Gorodischer, is both an intriguing puzzle and a meditation on how to write about, or through, violence, injustice, and loss. Among Gorodischer's many novels, Jaguars' Tomb most directly addresses the abductions and disappearances that occurred under the Argentine military dictatorship of 1976–83. This is the fourth of Gorodischer's books translated into English. The first, Kalpa Imperial—translated by Ursula Le Guin—was selected for the New York Times summer reading list in 2003.
Download or read book The Haunting of the Owens Family written by Patricia A. Perry and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-10-23 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Haunting of the Owens Family follows the Owenses for approximately 1 year, from 1974 to 1975. From most outside appearances, the Owenses are a normal, middle-class family who live in a big house in a nice neighborhood. Both the parents and the children have their crosses to bear, some ordinary and of this world, and some not. In spite of this, they each seem able to get up in the morning and face, if not accept, what lies ahead. But, walking a rope such as this can be done for only so long. What is truly going on in that house would cause the strongest of spirits to turn away. This novel follows a family as it tries to survive domestic abuse. It depicts the effects of screaming and throwing and yelling and the use of words meant to kill. It shows what happens when there is an ongoing war in your home. The Owenses story illustrates that what you do in front of your children, you do to your children. And the consequences are much more deleterious than those not realizing, not meaning to harm, expect. Amidst the ugliness, however, there are also dreams, magic, and hope. And the presence of ghostly activity in the Owenses house causes the reader to question the true catalyst of what has found this family. Theres Meggie, the wife and mother, who has lived most of her life the way she has been expected to, not questioning, not rising up, just following her duty, knowing somewhere inside that she has a penance to pay. There are the children: Elizabeth, whose anger is making a slow burn through her skin, who is most likely the only one in this family who actually sees what is going on. Grace, whose visions and clear eyes lend a certain magic to an otherwise oftentimes hopeless world. Danny, the only boy, whose dedication to making things right, trying to place order back into a chaotic world, almost ruins him. And Annabelle, whose tiny body and youngest mind help her to hide, but also cause her never to be seen -- not when it counts. And, finally, theres Dan, the husband and father -- a kind, funny man at times -- he finds himself in a place he never intended, where rage and a sense of injustice start the quakes in his house, in his children. This novel is intended for adults and is not appropriate for children.

Download or read book The Complete Memoirs written by Pablo Neruda and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic memoir of the Nobel Prize–winning poet, now expanded with newly discovered material Southern Chile was an open frontier when the beloved poet Pablo Neruda was born there in 1904. A motherless, pensive child in the wild, he began writing poems long before quitting the countryside for Santiago, where he spent his bohemian student years. From there, his memoir follows his travels as a globetrotting Chilean consul—including a stint in Spain during its civil war, and in Mexico, where he attracted attention for aiding a man suspected of conspiring to assassinate Leon Trotsky—and his short-lived service as a Chilean senator. Neruda, a communist, was driven from his senate seat in 1948, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. After a year in hiding, he escaped on horseback over the Andes, then to Europe and Asia. The memoirs conclude shortly after the coup in 1972 that overthrew his close friend Salvador Allende, Chile’s first democratically elected president, as Neruda himself battled cancer. Now expanded to include newly discovered material, The Complete Memoirs is the definitive edition of Neruda’s classic memoir—a moving, revealing record of his life as a poet, a patriot, and one of the twentieth century’s true men of conscience.
