Book Agricultural Development in the World Periphery

Download or read book Agricultural Development in the World Periphery written by Vicente Pinilla and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together analysis on the conditions of agricultural sectors in countries and regions of the world’s peripheries, from a wide variety of international contributors. The contributors to this volume proffer an understanding of the processes of agricultural transformations and their interaction with the overall economies of Africa, Asia and Latin America. Looking at the nineteenth and twentieth centuries – the onset of modern economic growth – the book studies the relationship between agriculture and other economic sectors, exploring the use of resources (land, labour, capital) and the influence of institutional and technological factors in the long-run performance of agricultural activities. Pinilla and Willebald challenge the notion that agriculture played a negligible role in promoting economic development in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, when the impulse towards industrialization in the developing world was more impactful.

Book excerpt: Will you be filled with hope and love when you die? You do have a choice. You can take death as it comes. You can grit your teeth and go down like a fighter. Or maybe you can get as much perspective and information as is available and make a sincere and deliberate attempt to prepare the best way you can. This book can help.Death can come like a thief in the night. It can come much earlier than expected. It can come very late, after we have given up hope and have become unable to fully prepare. But it will come. What a gift to have had the opportunity to live. Many have been denied this. What a gift to have had the opportunity to grow in love. Many have rejected this. Why?We have been given intelligence and free will. We can use these gifts to grow in understanding and love, or we can use them to further our own selfish desires. It is our choice. We can see only human weakness and curse the darkness. We can see light and goodness and seek only to increase them. It is our choice.Issues. Issues needed to be addressed-requiring knowledge, and ultimately wisdom, to engage them. This book tries to provide insight into these and similar observations. Whether it can be useful will depend greatly on the sincerity and commitment of the reader to read, to contemplate-devoid of preconceived biases-searching only for the Truth. The source of all goodness, all truth, is God. Without God there are only the shifting sands of human weakness and selfishness. This issue we must address before all others. From there we can proceed with confidence toward the Light.

Book Microbial Food Poisoning

Download or read book Microbial Food Poisoning written by Adrian R. Eley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yet his meat in his bowels is turned, it is the gall of asps within hirn. He hath swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again. Job 20 : 14-15 Over the last few years, food poisoning and food safety have become very topical subjects, eliciting a great deal of public concern both in the UK and elsewhere. During tutorial sessions with medical students in the late 1980s, I found myself being asked to recommend appropriate textbooks on food poisoning. At that time, I had to admit that there were few books available on this topic, and none which I feit was designed to meet their particular needs. This was the initial stimulus which prompted me to produce this book. Microbial Food Poisoning was never intended to be an authoritative work of reference on the topic: it began life as a teaching aid for senior medical students in the UK, which aimed to cover the major aspects of the subject in sufficient detail to be instructive without being confusing. The finished book has a rather more international flavour, using examples from overseas wher ever relevant. It is also, perhaps, somewhat more broadly-based, and as such should also prove to be of interest to students of microbiology, food science and food technology, to professionals allied to medicine such as nurses and medicallaboratory scientific officers, and to environmental health officers and catering staff.

Download or read book Hunt for the Jews written by Jan Grabowski and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-09 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing account of Polish cooperation with Nazis in WWII—a “grim, compelling [and] significant scholarly study” (Kirkus Reviews). Between 1942 and 1943, thousands of Jews escaped the fate of German death camps in Poland. As they sought refuge in the Polish countryside, the Nazi death machine organized what they called Judenjagd, meaning hunt for the Jews. As a result of the Judenjagd, few of those who escaped the death camps would survive to see liberation. As Jan Grabowski’s penetrating microhistory reveals, the majority of the Jews in hiding perished as a consequence of betrayal by their Polish neighbors. Hunt for the Jews tells the story of the Judenjagd in Dabrowa, Tarnowska, a rural county in southeastern Poland. Drawing on materials from Polish, Jewish, and German sources created during and after the war, Grabowski documents the involvement of the local Polish population in the process of detecting and killing the Jews who sought their aid. Through detailed reconstruction of events, “Grabowski offers incredible insight into how Poles in rural Poland reacted to and, not infrequently, were complicit with, the German practice of genocide. Grabowski also, implicitly, challenges us to confront our own myths and to rethink how we narrate British (and American) history of responding to the Holocaust” (European History Quarterly).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emily Riddle has lived her entire life inside a patriarchal commune led by her father. There are many rules, but the most important one, 'keep it in the commune', is the most difficult for her to follow... especially since the only people willing to champion her cause live on the outside. When Emily learns her father has promised her to Lorenzo, a perverted man who has plans for her that extend well beyond marriage and kids, she rebels. Regardless of the consequences, she refuses to marry someone who'd rather beat her than caress her. A day of hooky that starts out as a tiny act of defiance - sneaking out of the commune for a swim - turns into a day filled with hope. After spending time with Levi, a man camping near the lake, she finds what true romance looks like and catches a glimpse into a future that's filled with love and admiration rather than hate and submission. That tiny peek is enough to change the course of Emily's existence and makes it nearly impossible for her to go back to the commune and pretend she'll ever be able to tolerate the life chosen for her instead of the life she longs for. One that includes Levi. Fighting to escape the commune, its leaders, and her fiancé proves to be more dangerous than Emily expected. The secrets she knows, as the leader's daughter, will either follow her to the grave or send her - and Levi - there.
