Many medical experts believe that childhood obesity can develop as early as prenatal development in the uterus, and infancy. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationships between mothers' health and health behaviors (maternal BMI and infant feeding methods) and childhood obesity. We conducted and analyzed a sample of 307 mothers and their children (307) to examine each mother's maternal BMI and her child or children's BMI. We also examined mothers' feeding methods (bottle vs. breastfeeding).The result of this research did not match with the review of literature. Due to small sample size and limited age of children (0-6 months) in the sample, results were not significant. This study will be an important educational tool for health professions to encourage mothers in regard to maintain maternal healthy weight and promoting breast-feeding.

Certain groups, such as first-time mothers, may be particularly vulnerable to using feeding practices that are inconsistent with current evidence-based feeding guidance. The purpose of the present research is to extend our knowledge of predictors of maternal feeding practices and their association with infant growth and obesity risk. The sample consisted of mothers participating in the Infant Feeding Practices Study II (IFPS II) and Year 6 Follow-up Study (Y6FU), a national longitudinal study of maternal feeding practices across the first year of life and at 6 years old. Data were collected approximately monthly across the first year of life and once again when the children were 6 years old. The aim of Study 1 was to describe differences between first-time and multiparous mothers in demographics, feeding practices, infant sleep, fussiness, and infant growth trajectories across the first year of life. Findings revealed that first-time mothers were more likely than multiparous mothers to report their infant was fussy and to use a number of feeding practices inconsistent with current guidance on infant feeding. Firstborns, despite being lighter at birth, surpassed later-born children at 7 months for weight-for-age z-scores. The aims of Study 2 were to use latent class analysis to identify distinct patterns of dietary exposures at 9 months, identify predictors of those patterns, and test the association between these dietary patterns and maternal and child weight outcomes at 1 year postpartum. Five classes of dietary patterns were identified: Breastfed, Fruits and Vegetables; Breastfed, Low Variety; Formula, Fruits and Vegetables; Formula, Low Variety; and Mixed, High Energy Density. The 5 dietary patterns differed in a number of maternal and child characteristics such as maternal parity, and childcare. The Mixed High Energy Density class had the highest probability of child overweight at 1 year among the latent classes. Study 3 utilized the 5 patterns of dietary exposures identified in Study 2 to test whether patterns of dietary exposures at 9 months were associated with differences in child diet and weight outcomes at 6 years. The class that most closely followed AAP infant feeding recommendations (Breastfed, Fruits and Vegetables) was most likely to meet the dietary guidelines for fruit and vegetable intake at 6 years. Infants in the Mixed, High Energy Density class had a high probability of consuming fried potatoes, and SSBs at 6 years and being overweight at 6 years. Taken together, these findings emphasize infancy as a critical period for mothers to develop nutritious and age-appropriate feeding practices to promote healthy growth and reduce obesity risk.

Optimal nutrition and health care of both the mother and infant during these first 1000 days of an infant's life are closely linked to growth, learning potential and neurodevelopment, in turn affecting long-term outcomes. Children with low birth weight do not only include premature babies, but also those with intrauterine growth restrictions who consequently have a very high risk of developing metabolic syndrome in the future. Epidemiology, epigenetic programming, the correct nutrition strategy and monitoring of outcomes are thus looked at carefully in this book. More specifically, two important nutritional issues are dealt with in depth: The first being the prevention of low birth weight, starting with the health of adolescent girls, through the pre-pregnancy and pregnancy stages and ending with lactation. The second point of focus concerns the nutritional follow-up and feeding opportunities in relation to dietary requirements of children with low birth weight.

The sample for this study of the U.S. population was selected from households in 81 counties across the United States. About 40,000 persons 2 months of age and over were selected, including large samples of both young and old persons. About 12,000 of the sample persons were black Americans, 12,000 were Mexican-Americans, and the remaining 16,000 were of all other race and ethnicity groups. All selected persons were asked to complete an extensive interview and an examination in a large mobile examination center. The survey period is 1988-94, consisting of two phases of equal length and sample size. Both Phase 1 and Phase 2 were random samples of the U.S. population living in households.

Book excerpt: The number of children in the United States who are becoming obese has tripled since 1980. Children as young as two years old are at risk for obesity which is a Body Mass Index (BMI) of greater than 85%. Researchers have studied the relationship between infant feeding and the risk for obesity as a child. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), The World Health Organization (WHO), and the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) recommend breastfeeding as the preferred method of infant feeding until at least 6 months of age and ideally for the first year of life. Secondary analysis of large data sets indicated that breastfeeding had a slight effect on the risk for obesity but was not statistically significant for protection against the risk for obesity as a five year old child. The purpose of this project was to explore the relationship between maternal infant feeding practices and the risk for obesity for children at five years of age. Approval was obtained from the University Institutional Review Board (IRB) and the pediatrician whose practice was used for the data collected in this retrospective designed study. The variables of interest included the type of feeding (breast milk or formula) the infant was given, the age of the infant when solid feeding were initiated, and the height and weight of the child at each health visit. Over 900 charts were reviewed for inclusion and 109 charts met the criteria for inclusion in the study. There were 32 breastfed infants and 61 formula fed infants, the 16 remaining infants were simultaneously given breast milk and formula. The BMI was determined at the five year visit from the height and weight documented. The odds ratio for breastfed infants and the risk for obesity was .848 with a confidence interval of (0.349, 2.057) and a p-value of .358 which indicates that there is not sufficient evidence to say that breastfeeding lowers the risk for obesity as a five year old child.

Book excerpt: Present research was done to assess the effect of maternal perception & child feeding practices on weight status of preschoolers.102 mothers were questioned about family background, nutrition awareness, perception of their child's weight, feeding practices on weight status of children & factors affecting these were assessed through statistical analysis. In comparison with WHO growth standards, 30% children were obese, but 69% mothers wrongly perceived their child's weight. Mothers of overweight sons had more wrong perception than those with overweight daughters. Perception that children were underweight was associated with maternal BMI. Child's weight was found unrelated to feeding practices followed by mothers. But, there were associations between different subscales of feeding practices & family characteristics. Despite mounting public health concern about childhood obesity in India, most of surveyed mothers were not concerned about their children s weight, and many did not perceive their overweight children any different from their peers. This may have implications for interventions that rely on acknowledging child's overweight as a first step to change.
