What remains contentious is the nature of this relationship. Firstly, how much of the association is due to maternal education serving as a proxy for socioeconomic status and regional factors? Secondly, how does a higher level of maternal education translate into improved child health outcomes? This paper aims to examine these questions by analysing the relationship between mother's level of education and child height-for-age, or stunting in India. Using a nationwide family and household survey (NFHS-3, 2005-06), I estimate multivariate regressions to examine how the impact of education varies across model specifications. In particular, I examine the role of three pathways in serving as potential mechanisms through which maternal education has a positive impact on child outcomes. These are (1) Information Processing Effects (2) Maternal Autonomy (3) Use of Community Services. I also use fixed effects estimations to account for village level heterogeneity. The results show that a significant portion of the effect of maternal education can in fact be attributed to socioeconomic variables and community level factors. The analysis gives us insightful findings regarding the differential impacts on child health across various categories of maternal education, the role of the pathways, and how these effects change across specifications. The results have relevant policy implications in the context of improving child health status in India.

Specifically, the chapters address acute illness and undernutrition in children, principally under age 5. It also covers maternal mortality, morbidity, stillbirth, and influences to pregnancy and pre-pregnancy. Volume 3 focuses on developments since the publication of DCP2 and will also include the transition to older childhood, in particular, the overlap and commonality with the child development volume. The DCP3 evaluation of these conditions produced three key findings: 1. There is significant difficulty in measuring the burden of key conditions such as unintended pregnancy, unsafe abortion, nonsexually transmitted infections, infertility, and violence against women. 2. Investments in the continuum of care can have significant returns for improved and equitable access, health, poverty, and health systems. 3. There is a large difference in how RMNCH conditions affect different income groups; investments in RMNCH can lessen the disparity in terms of both health and financial risk.

My research question is "What are the intervening variables involved in the process that lead to a relationship between maternal education and infant/under five child mortality in India?" The dependent variable is infant/under five child mortality and the independent variables are maternal education, women's empowerment indicators, women's autonomy indicators, knowledge acquisition measure and decision-making regarding reproductive behavior and child care measure. I argue that the causal link between maternal education to child survival is due to impact of education on women's empowerment and autonomy (both in absolute and relative terms). Women's social status (empowerment and autonomy) improves with education, which has an impact on their ability to acquire knowledge and make decisions regarding their reproductive behavior and child care.

A woman in Niger has a one in seven chance of dying during the course of her lifetime from complications during pregnancy or delivery. That's in stark contrast to the risk for mothers in America, where it's one in 4,800 or in Ireland, where it's just one in 48,000. Addressing that gap is a multidisciplinary challenge, requiring an emphasis on education, human resources, community involvement and social equality. At a minimum, women must be guaranteed antenatal care, skilled birth attendants and emergency obstetrics, and postpartum care. These essential interventions will only be guaranteed within the context of improved education and the abolition of discrimination.

Although the existing research on this topic is scarce, the report drew on similar literature on the consequences of adult disease and death, especially the growing literature on the socioeconomic consequences of AIDS, to look at potential consequences from maternal disability and death.

This book provides new, original evidence on links between maternal employment and children's health using data associated with three indicators of children's nutritional status: birth size, stunting, and wasting. Results support the implementation and enforcement of policy interventions that bolster women's advancement in the labor market and reduce undernutrition among children. In this paper, we examine whether parental human capital can substitute for low provision of quality health infrastructure in the areas of India, suffering from adverse disease environment. We use the second and third waves of the National Family Health Survey and restrict sample to first birth and born within last five year from the survey to minimize recall bias. Along with the common measures of fetal health such as birth weight and neonatal mortality, we examine two less frequent measures - likelihood of a male birth as a measure of fetal survival to term, based on the medical evidence of male fragility in utero and birth size which reflects fetal health and nutrition. For the rural areas in high infant mortality states which have low provision of quality health infrastructure and are suffering from adverse disease environment, a 10 centimeter increase in mother height is associated with more than 2% increase in likelihood of having a male child at first birth. Maternal education and stature are positively associated with other fetal health outcomes as well in this area. These associations are weaker in the areas of India where either low provision of health quality or adverse disease environment are less of a concern. Our results suggest gender specific selection in live birth can also occur purely due to biological reasons and gender of the first child may not be random in India. Moreover, intergenerational persistence in poor health status of women can arise due to biological reasons, along with son preference, given the cultural and economic context of the country. Income, access to information and other community characteristics are also associated with various dimensions of fetal health, although the relationships are not always strong or consistent.
