Book excerpt: Excerpt from Materials for the Study of Elementary Economics In the choice of the materials the editors have been guided by actual classroom experiment. The nucleus of the book was originally printed as a series of bulletins which have for three formed a part of the reading required of beginning students in economics at the University of Chicago. During this time unsatisfactory selections have been eliminated and much new matter has been added. Copies of the bulletins have been submitted for criticism to teachers in several other institutions. The volume which now appears may thus be said already in a measure to have demonstrated its usefulness as an aid in college instruction. It is believed that this is pedagogically helpful; answers have no plilt'o except as following questions. It must happen also that one question be found of profit to this or that student, while entirely failing to appeal to a third. The world in which we live is an ever changing, restless world; it is not static or at a standstill. Institutions, laws and ways of getting a living are different to-day from those prevailing when George Washington was President; and before the year 2000 is ushered in many further changes will occur. There is progress, or at least change, as the years go by in government, in moral ideals and in methods employed in industry. Constant change is the law of life, in institu tions as well as in animals. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Elementary Economics With Special Reference to Social and Business Conditions in the United States Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Economics With Special Reference to Social, and Business Conditions in the United States Recent events have brought the people Of the United States face to face with numerous new economic problems, many Of which are likely to remain unsolved for years to come; besides, they have complicated to a marked degree those Old problems which were pressing for solution at the outbreak of the Great War. In consequence, our leaders are becoming more and more convinced that increased attention Should be given in our secondary schools to a serious consideration Of the fundamental principles on which these problems rest. Such a conviction is a new one in many quarters, for hitherto the notion has very generally prevailed, especially among uni versity teachers, that no formal study Of the Principles of Economics should be undertaken before the sophomore year in college. Obviously such a notion carries the implication, un conscious perhaps, that the fundamentals Of Economics, even in their simplest forms, should be withheld from the great mass of young men and women engaged in industry, and restricted to the select few who are able by one means or another to be come college students. Such a notion not only carries vicious implication, but it also is ill founded; for hundreds Of high schools the country over prove by experience that their pupils are fully capable of grasping the elements of economic science when presented concretely and in a way to show their relationship to practical affairs. Book The Elements of Economics Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Elements of Economics Classic Reprint written by Charles J. Bullock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-10 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Economics This book has been written in response to a demand for a somewhat shorter and more elementary work than the Introduction to the Study of Economics, which the author brought out in 1897. In order to meet this demand, it was necessary to make a substantially new book, in which the substance of doctrine and the gen eral groundwork remain the same, but the method of treating most subjects has been more or less radically altered. Less space has been devoted to purely theo retical questions and more descriptive and illustrative material has been presented. It is hoped that the present treatise will meet the needs of a relatively short course for beginners in eco nomics. As the work stands, it is probably extensive enough for the longest courses now given in secondary schools. If it is found too long for some of the shorter courses, the instructor can easily adapt it to the needs of his class by making a few omissions. The first chap ter can be treated in an introductory talk or lecture on the first day that the class meets; and the tenth and fifteenth chapters, treating, as they do, topics that are seldom discussed at length in an elementary work, can be readily omitted. With a few changes of this sort. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Home Economics in Elementary and Secondary Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book Home Economics in Elementary and Secondary Schools Classic Reprint written by Agnes K. Hanna and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Economics in Elementary and Secondary Schools This book is planned primarily as a text-book for students in special methods courses in home economics in colleges and normal schools. In addition it should be valuable to experienced teachers as it contains discussions of many of the practical teaching problems that they meet in their daily work, as well as a more general study of the purposes and results of home economics teaching. Teachers of special methods courses in home economics have been handicapped because little material on the principles and methods of teaching home economics has been available for use as text or reference books for these classes. This has resulted not only in less effective teaching in these courses, due to the necessity of using a lecture method rather than a problem method in the class, but also in the slow development of a common understanding or interpretation of some of the most fundamental problems in home economics teaching. This book has been written with the hope that it will be of assistance in both of these situations. It is based on several years' experience in teaching a special methods course in which many of the students have been experienced teachers. The point of view that is emphasized and the conclusions that are reached are the results of the discussions carried on in these classes. It is because this material embodies or reflects the consensus of opinion of many persons who have received their training in schools in different parts of the country that it is offered as a first step toward a more scientific study of the teaching of home economics. Book Teaching Home Economics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Teaching Home Economics Classic Reprint written by Anna M. Cooley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching Home Economics The object of this book is to offer suggestions for the organiza tion, administration, and teaching of the home economics studies. In the preparation of the book the authors have endeavored to adapt it to the various types of persons whose needs they hope to serve. Before the war these studies were recognized by some as an essential part of the general education of every girl. With the declaration of peace, they assume a new significance and appear as an indispensable part of her education. This is true because every girl needs instruction regarding better and more healthful living, and training in those practices which will enable her to live her daily life more intelligently, to rear her children more thoughtfully, and to serve her community and country more efficiently. These studies are needed by some because they prepare also for certain definite wage-earning vocations. This book draws the distinction between home economics studies as organized for general or liberal education purposes and such lines of specialized vocational training as may have grown out of them. It is the conviction of the authors that only through a closely woven course involving both theory and practice can the subject matter offered have any real value to the students. The book presupposes courses in the various phases of Home Economics, practical, scientific, artistic, economic, and sociological, of greater or less intensity. In other words, it is taken for granted that the student who will use it will be familiar with the scope of the field, and that her course in methods will serve as a means of evaluating and unifying the material she gains through her tech nical courses, and interpreting it in terms of elementary and secondary school teaching. Book Manual of References and Exercises in Economics Vol 1

Download or read book Manual of References and Exercises in Economics Vol 1 written by Frank A. Fetter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of References and Exercises in Economics, Vol. 1: For Use With,, Economic Principles The literature of economics is so extensive that a complete bibliography of some single chapters of a general text would fill a book. Many of the books cited below on special topics contain elaborate special bibliographies. General texts in economies are, with rare exceptions, not included here; the student can conveniently consult them on any topic by means of the index with which each of them is provided. Large use has been made, however, of the several volumes of selected readings in economics which have appeared within the past few years and which now are to be found in most college libraries. These are cited under brief titles as follows: Materials, for Materials for the study of elementary economics, by members of the department of political economy of the University of Chicago, 1913. Readings, Bullock, for Selected readings in economics, C. J. Bullock (ed.), 1907. Readings, Hamilton, for Readings in current economic problems, W. H. Hamilton (ed.), 1914. Source Book, for Source book in Economics, F. A. Fetter (ed.), 1912. It is more than questionable whether the student of an elementary text should be required to read extensively outside in the more or less controversial literature of the subject. This is especially true of the field of the principles, covered in Volume I, where careful drill in definition and clear thinking are more to be sought than voluminous reading. Accordingly, no attempt has been made to cite the many writings that have contributed to the development of economic doctrine in its details in the last half century. The names of the authors and of their writings are to be sought by the more advanced student of theory in the voluminous special literature of the subject. Where the conception developed in the text and the grouping of materials are along unconventional lines, the references in some cases represent a somewhat different point of view from that of the text, but are valuable for their suggestiveness. In other cases preference has been given to concrete examples embodying the principles presented. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Elementary Household Chemistry

Download or read book Elementary Household Chemistry written by John Ferguson Snell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Household Chemistry: An Introductory d104book for Students of Home Economics The recent development of courses of instruction in Home Economics in America has created a field for textbooks pre pared to meet the special needs of this new class of students. The course in chemistry presented in this book is the outcome of several years' experience with a class of students, the ma jority of whom have had no previous instruction in the science. The text has been written with the needs of such students primarily in mind, but the hope is entertained that, with suit able omissions, it may also be found useful in the many insti tutions in which the student of household chemistry approaches the subject after a preliminary training in general chemistry. The principle which has been kept constantly in mind is to introduce the applications of chemistry to household affairs as early and as often as possible and to present only such por tions of the subject matter of theoretical chemistry as is essential to the comprehension of these applications. In this way the student's interest is enlisted and maintained a most important consideration in the teaching of an applied science. The author's thanks are due to the many friends who have taken an interest in the preparation of this volume and more particularly to Professor John Bonsall Porter of mcgill Uni versity; Mr. F. O. Farey, of the Robert W. Hunt Company, Montreal and Mr. Peter H. Walsh, Chemist of the Dominion d104ile Company, Magog, Quebec, for suggestions in regard to the chapters on fuels, soaps, and textiles, respectively; to Miss Katharine A.
