Book Site Control of Materials

Download or read book Site Control of Materials written by John E Johnston and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-01-26 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Site Control of Materials: Handling, Storage and Protection deals with improving control in construction sites to limit waste resulting from improper storage and handling of valuable or fragile materials. According to the Building Research Establishment in the United Kingdom, 10-20% of all materials delivered to the construction site either end up as waste or are illegally removed during the contract. Bigger construction contracts such as in housing developments require new kinds of materials in larger volumes and new construction techniques, leading to increases in waste. To be able to lessen wastage, site management must 1) anticipate the progress and problems of construction; 2) control men and materials with equal efficiency; 3) complete the contract within the programmed period; and 4) carry out the work according to specification. The book explains in detail the procedures for obtaining materials, materials handing (including unit loads, pallets, deliveries, offloading), storage (stockpile arrangements, protection, facilities, withdrawals), as well as implementing stock controls on sites (coordination, transfer, accounting). The text also addresses prevention of on-site damages through site supervision, out-of-hours supervision, and installing fire precautions. The book should prove valuable for construction engineers, foremen, project managers, plant administrators, warehouse keepers, and other personnel connected with materials handling, their storage or safekeeping.

Book Materials Control to Avoid Waste

Download or read book Materials Control to Avoid Waste written by Building Research Establishment. Department of the Environment and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although some waste is inevitable on building sites, much can be done to reduce it. An earlier digest, No. 247, introduces the problem, concludes that the greatest change necessary is one of attitude but also recommends the adoption of materials control procedures. Materials control covers the realistic design, specification and procurement of goods; their packaging, transportation, reception and accounting, handling, storage, use and protection after fixing. Careful attention to materials control techniques can help to minimise waste as well as ensuring that other resources are used in the construction process to their maximum effect. Designers (of buildings, plant and components), manufacturers and quantity surveyors are being urged to follow the Chartered Institute of Building's plan for action, Materials control and waste in building, which gives guidance on materials control prior to completion of tendering by the contractor. This digest deals with materials control and handling from the time that the contract is awarded.

Book Management of Construction Projects

Download or read book Management of Construction Projects written by Brian Cooke and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-10-24 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Construction Management is a wide ranging discipline, but ultimately it is a demanding, hands-on discipline concerned with the management of people, plant and materials, all mobilised to complete a building project safely, on time, on budget and to the client’s satisfaction. Management of Construction Projects is a highly illustrated series of case studies based on seven live construction management projects, demonstrating the very practical nature of managing projects. The detailed case studies cover a variety of construction projects, varying in value from £1million to £117 million, including a major inner city office block, a portal framed factory unit, a university refurbishment project, a superstore & car park and a new school building. The case studies emphasise detailed on site management procedures and identify a predominantly functional approach to managing projects. A number of related chapters covering practical and theoretical aspects of construction management support and illustrate the individual case studies. With a strong emphasis on the practical nature of the subject, Management of Construction Projects is an ideal introduction to the subject for all students on construction and related degree and diploma programmes. It will be of particular interest to students preparing for the CIOB EPA programme and the new NVQ courses at level 4 and 5 in construction management.

Book Problems Associated with Material Management Practice in the Construction Industry

Download or read book Problems Associated with Material Management Practice in the Construction Industry written by Fredrick Ahenkora Boamah and published by Grin Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-14 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 64.2, language: English, abstract: Management of materials has over the years been a great problem to most firms in the construction industry. In construction project operations, there is always a tendency of mismanagement of materials by construction firms. As the size of the contract increases, however, so does the scale of activities concerning materials management. The aim of this research was therefore to investigate into materials management problems faced by construction firms in the Greater Accra Region. To achieve this aim, the following objectives were set out: To identify the problems in materials management practices by greater Accra firms, to identify the causes of these materials management problems, to identify proper ways of managing materials by construction firms on sites and to suggest ways of solving materials management problems by construction firms. The research instrument adopted was the use of questionnaires. Fifty-five (55) sets of questionnaires was distributed to various contractors. The sampling technique adopted was the snowball sampling technique. Quantity analysis approach was adopted for the analysis of the data which involved the use of frequency distribution tables and charts. The analysis of the data revealed that high project cost and delay were also some of the effects of improper materials management. Provisions of standard storage facilities, delivery of materials to the site, were some of the factors that most construction firms considered prior to the commencement of works with regards to the storage of materials on site.

Book Managing Productivity in Construction

Download or read book Managing Productivity in Construction written by Low Sui Pheng and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997, this volume joined the debate assessing the potential of the Just-In-Time management philosophy from the manufacturing industry for Singapore’s construction industry by examining the "off-site" prefabrication of precast concrete components in Singapore, in comparison with traditional management systems. In the wake of the 1991 Strategic Economic Plan of Singapore, which forecasted alarmingly low productivity in the local construction sector, the authors noted that construction in Japan was 35% more productive, whilst Finland was 75% better. Highlighting immense potential for the JIT approach, they explore the JIT philosophy, traditional systems, construction wastes and comparisons between construction and manufacturing.

Book Dangerous Materials Control Risk Prevention and Crisis Management

Download or read book Dangerous Materials Control Risk Prevention and Crisis Management written by Alberto Brugnoli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-29 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ADRIANO DE MAIO IReR President This publication originated from the workshop on “Control and risk prevention of dangerous materials and crisis management” that took place in Sofia, Bulgaria, in March 2009. The basic idea is that international scientific cooperation can effectively contribute to security, stability and solidarity among nations, through increased collaboration, networking and capacity-building and supporting democratic growth and economic development in Partner Countries. We are all facing new needs and threats, deriving from a world changing constantly its social, political and economic dimension and, for this reason, the international dialogue through civil science represents a way forward to comm- ment to global common issues. In fact, the Lombardy Regional Institute for Research has developed some international activities aiming at establishing networks of scientists and experts in defined areas and subjects. Through one of these activities, the Institute entered in touch with the Science for Peace and Security Programme. In this framework, we decided to share the experience of Lombardy Region on transportation of dangerous materials (half of their total transport in Italy): research and studies in civil area conducted in Lombardy Region are considered the most innovative in Europe for the results obtained. Comparison with diverse international experiences is a great opportunity of implementing present results and applying them to different applications (from civil to anti-terrorism) and extending them to countries other than Italy.
