Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Material for Exercises in German Composition: With a Carefully Arranged English-German Vocabulary In preparing this little book, the following principles have been my guide. The grammatical introduction is intended merely to supplement any grammar that may be in use in our schools and colleges. My own classes have had these notes and, because of their appreciation of them, they are now given to the public in the hope that they will find a welcome. In the introduction to the select vocabulary, p. 17, the importance of getting a working vocabulary as soon as possible has been emphasized. In the main vocabulary, which consists of some 2000 entries, great care has been taken to give students a fair knowledge of synonyms. It is just possible that brevity has been considered at the expense of clearness. Pains has been taken to indicate the government of verbs taking the genitive and dative, and where nouns, adjectives and verbs require a preposition to complete their sense, this has been indicated, and when there might be any doubt, the case governed. This has been a very exacting piece of work, and as there may be omissions and errors any corrections or suggestions will be thankfully received. The exercises of Part I. are a departure from the usual exercises in grammar. Too often these consist of a lot of sentences, made up of unusual words and idioms, to be found in every grammar of every language and absolutely without interest to any one, dead material. My object in constructing these exercises was to use the everyday living language which all students would feel was likely to be useful. Book Exercises in German Syntax and Composition

Download or read book Exercises in German Syntax and Composition written by Marian Whitney and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-11-05 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpts from the Introduction. A WORD of excuse may seem needed for adding another book on German composition to the large number already in existence. But we feel that the many such books issued during the last few years have all neglected to provide for one large class of students and one real need of language work. There are many excellent books dealing with what the Germans call Realien, or the facts and words of every-day life, but there are very few which give an advanced student the vocabulary necessary for the study of literature and literary criticism; there are various books for giving practice in the elementary rules and forms of German, there are practically none which deal systematically with more advanced German syntax. Now composition work based on Realien finds its proper place in the work of the first and second years, when the main object of instruction is to familiarize the pupil with the simple vocabulary of every-day conversation and the elementary forms of the language, but as soon as the study of the literature is begun, a different and wider vocabulary is needed. As all students of German, except in purely business courses, look forward to some study of the literature as one of the chief reasons for learning the language, there should be room for a book especially adapted to their needs. The most valuable feature of this book is probably the series of exercises on German syntax which form the first part. These exercises are the result of an unsuccessful effort to find something to meet the needs of the authors' own classes at Vassar College. After the elementary study of the grammar, and of the simple exercises which accompany it, has been followed by some translation of simple English into German, and perhaps by some practice in freie Reproduktion, the student needs a thorough review of the principles of grammar and syntax and an opportunity for acquiring proficiency in more difficult constructions. Most of the larger grammars are provided with exercises intended to afford such opportunity, but these exercises consist generally of disconnected sentences, each illustrating one rule or construction, but without any effort to connect these sentences into a whole, or to build up vocabulary systematically - an aim of which the teacher of languages should never lose sight. Being unable to find what we wanted for such work with our own classes, we wrote this series of exercises, which have borne the test of two years' use in the class-room, and have proved to be thoroughly satisfactory. Each group of rules is taken up separately, and for each a specially prepared German model text is given, which illustrates the rules to be studied. On this text the English exercise is based. Each part of the exercise, German and English, forms in itself a consecutive whole, treating a subject of interest and value to the student. In each exercise the vocabulary is carefully planned to introduce new and valuable words and expressions, while fixing in the memory, by frequent repetition, those which have been given in the preceding lessons.... The second part consists of selections for translations from English into German, which are graded in difficulty. The subject-matter is also for the most part literary, and gives opportunity to use and enlarge the vocabulary already acquired. In some of the passages selected an occasional word or phrase has been altered (with the permission of the author), for the purpose of facilitating translation into German.... The third part contains suggestions for simple themes or papers in German based on such dramas and poems as are usually read in our schools and colleges. The first series consists of questions which may be answered in short themes of two or three pages; the second series gives suggestions for longer essays....

Book Selections for German Composition

Download or read book Selections for German Composition written by Charles Harris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections for German Composition: With Notes and Vocabulary This book has been compiled in the hope of offering to beginners in German composition suitable material for useful exercise in translating from English into German. Reasonable ease and celerity in German composition is to be acquired only through drill in the common constructions of the language. It is not enough that the student write these constructions a few times; he must write them and rewrite them, until they are absolutely his own. Such work is manifestly most profitable when begun early in the study of the language and made to keep pace with subsequent advancement. Only such knowledge of forms as can be gained in a few weeks is required for the use of Part I. The German originals and the notes are here expected to supply all the words needed in the English paraphrases; and it is believed that any one who has remastered German inflections can, with the aid of the Introduction, translate these paraphrases without reference to the Vocabulary. For the convenience of those who may wish to omit these Introductory Selections, Part II. is made independent of Part I. The selections have not been chosen for any special literary value. It is easy to offer the beginner too good literature. One might almost say that for the purpose of composition, except in the case of advanced students, the better an extract is as literature, the worse it is as an exercise. Even the mature beginner must first learn the simple style of every-day speech. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Easy German Composition With an Abstract of German Grammar

Download or read book Easy German Composition With an Abstract of German Grammar written by Marian P. Whitney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Easy German Composition With an Abstract of German Grammar This book is intended to give a complete review of all important German forms and constructions, in connection with practice in writing simple prose and the systematic building up of a good vocabulary. It is suited for use in schools in the second or third year of the study of German, and in colleges in the second year. The first part consists of exercises, each of which is a connected piece of prose based on a German model and illustrating a particular point of grammar. Each treats, in the form of simple narrative, conversation or letter, some phase of daily life, the whole series affording a carefully selected and logically developed vocabulary of practical, every-day German. The book can be used equally well in teaching either by the old or the new method. Teachers who prefer to have no translation made from English into German can attain the same results by a careful study of the German model exercises with the help of the questions and by exercises in "Freie Reproduktion," suggestions for which may be found in Part II. These may, of course, be endlessly varied and added to by the teacher, who will find in Parts III and IV further valuable material for reproduction. On the other hand, those who desire more material for translation, will find in Part V longer connected prose passages based on the vocabulary of the exercises. Book German Prose Composition

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Preface: THE introduction and introductory exercises are intended to familiarise the student with the chief differences of English and German construction. Foremost amongst these is the difference in the order of words in principal sentences and dependent clauses. To impress this cardinal difference on the pupil, the first exercises are given in a twofold form: first, exclusively in principal and co-ordinate sentences; and next, in principal sentences combined with relative and dependent clauses. Teachers may find it useful to analyze some of the succeeding exercises in a similar way, especially with pupils whose knowledge of English syntax is limited. To them I should recommend, as a most helpful auxiliary, the late Professor W, D. Whitney's Essentials of English Grammar, or Professor John Earle's Simple Grammar of English Now in Use. Another great difficulty in translating from English into German is the rendering of the Attributes of the substantive. This matter I have treated at some length in the Introduction, and shown by warning examples into what enormities even German translators of reputation have been led, and suggested easy means of how to avoid them. The English participial constructions and contracted sentences, though treated at sufficient length in my Public School German Grammar, receive some further elucidation. As this subject is inexhaustible, teachers will find ample additional material in the two English Grammars mentioned above. A few of the Introductory Exercises consist of detached sentences, as there would have been little use in giving a long extract, containing perhaps only one or two instances of the construction required. I have taken great care in compiling the Vocabulary. In many instances where the student will perhaps look in vain for a footnote, he will find the information sought for in the Vocabulary. In conclusion I have to thank the several publishers and authors, or their respective representatives, for having granted me permission to reprint extracts from their works: Messrs. Blackwood and Son (George Eliot, A. W. Kinglake); Messrs. Chatto and Windus (Justin M'Carthy); the Clarendon Press (Bishop Stubbs); Messrs. Longmans and Co. (H. T. Buckle, W. E. H. Lecky, J. A. Froude); Messrs. Macmillan and Co. (C. Kingsley, Sir A. Geikie, T. Huxley, P. G. Hamerton); Mr. John Murray (Dean Stanley, Lord Mahon) ; Messrs. Smith, Elder and Co. (Sir A. Helps, Rev. John Earle). Their kindness has enabled me to collect a series of extracts in modern English, presenting both a great variety of interest and form.

This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Materials for German Composition Based on "Höher Als Die Kirche" The need of materials for German composition, based upon continuous texts which should afford practice in the use of the actual idioms of the language, has long been felt. The success of the excellent French series devised by Professor C. H. Grandgent of Harvard University has led to the substantial adoption of the same plan, with his cordial concurrence. As suming a foregoing thorough drill in the elements of German inflection and syntax, the exercises are to be used without a dictionary, after the student has made himself so familiar with each original passage as to have an instinctive feeling for its vocabulary and constructions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Composition: With Notes and Vocabularies The text presented here is intended for students who have already been introduced to the elements of German. The writer has endeavored to make the book thoroughly Ger man in spirit. While he has sought to present an idiomatic English text, his chief attention has been given to furnishing one which could readily be translated into idiomatic German. In the first selections of Parts I and 11, parallel German and English texts are given. The student should, of course, make himself thoroughly familiar with the German before translating the English text based upon it, and should, in this translation, use the general english-german vocabulary at the end of the book as little as possible. Questions covering the lessons in Part I, but intended to be suggestive rather than exhaustive, have been prepared, and it is hoped that the teacher will find the material offered in this book especially fitted for systematic work in conver sation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Composition: With a Review of Grammar and Syntax and With Notes and a Vocabulary The students for whom this little book has been compiled are supposed to have a fair knowledge of the grammar of German language. They should have done in addition at least one half year's reading and translating from the German into the English. This book is intended to provide well-graded selections for translating English into German. No pretense is made that the exercises are of a high literary value. Good literature is usually much too difficult for students at this stage of advance; they are still in the realm of drudgery and therefore more or less incapable of enjoying literary excellence. In addition to the exercises contained in the book, students should be asked to write letters and compositions on original subjects, such as "My Autobiography; A Picnic; My Christmas Vacation; etc." The notes and vocabulary which are added are merely suggestive. They can not and ought not take the place of a grammar and a dictionary. The last selection in the book, entitled Leberecht Huhnchen, translated from the German of H. Seidel by Miss Anna Knight, appeared in the Outlook and is here reproduced (with notes added) by special permission, for which the compilers hearty thanks are hereby expressed.
