This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Material for a Public Library Campaign One of the most effective means of conducting a library campaign, especially in its early stage, is through the press. Not only will the reading and thinking part of the people thereby be reached, but any library editorial ap pearing in a newspaper, will, because of the public notice given it, receive greater consideration than if printed else where. Library Commission workers and library support ers in general, have felt the need of printed material which could be made immediately available in a library campaign. Most library addresses and articles are too long, too scholarly in treatment or have lacked that crisp style necessary for use in the press. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Function of the Public Library in a Democracy But even an institution conceived and established in such a democratic atmosphere may fail to realize its full value as a servant of the democracy which created it. Moreover, conditions change rapidly - just how rapidly we of to-day are well qualified to judge. It is therefore not only proper but absolutely necessary that the public library of to-day should ask itself whether it is in harmony with the conditions of to-day and to ex amine searchingly and honestly whether it is returning full value and its highest service to the community which maintains it. Nothing less than that high stan dard will fulfil the obligation to democracy, or satisfy the conscience of the public library. This book was released on 2017-01-24 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Trustees of the Public Library, 1873 With the increasing magnitude of the libraries, and the new experiences called forth by the Branches, the reports of the Superintendent increase annually in detail and in value. No one can properly understand or appreciate the careful oversight and the minute analysis of all the points of admin istration which ought to be known not only to the community, but to every similar organization, without a careful scrutiny of his tabular statements. The duties and responsibilities of this devoted official increase from year to year. With the additional charge of the Roxbury Library, to be opened during the next month, and with the possibly impending annexation of neighboring towns and cities containing other libraries to be placed under the control of this Board, all executive labor will be proportionately magnified. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Function of a Public Library and Its Value to a Community: A Paper Read Before "the Round Table," at St. Louis Club, Saturday, Nov. 8, 1884 The United States report of 187 6 gives a list of libraries, containing an aggregate of over twelve million vol umes, with permanent funds estimated at The private benefactions to libraries reported at that time amounted to and it was estimated on good grounds that there was as much more which had not been reported. Five sixths of the whole sum has been given within the last thirty fivc years. The statistics soon to be published by the Government will, I think, show a still larger-proportionate aggregate for the last eight years. The most notable dona tion is that of Enoch Pratt of nearly for the foundation of a public library for the city of Baltimore. A citizen of Providence gives for a new building for the public library of that city and there have been numerous endowments and bequests throughout New England. The collected statistics of twenty-three libraries show that out of a total circulation of volumes in the year 1875, were lost through borrowers and were worn out, being a total loss of volumes, or less than two-tenths of one per cent, a considerably smaller percentage than the loss of a like amount of paper currency in circulation during the same period and it appears that nearly three times as many books wear out in honorable service as are lost through carelessness and dishonesty. This book was released on 2016-08-15 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Report of the Trustees of the Public Library of the City of Boston, 1896 As the annual return which the Librarian is directed to make to the Trustees gives such complete and instructive information touching every department of the library, and exhibits so fully all the details of its management, they beg leave to adopt this return as part of their own report; other wise, this communication would be largely a repetition of what the Librarian has so well stated. The Trustees earnestly advise a careful consideration of his report, not only by the city government but by all who are interested in the success of the library and desire that it should fulfil the expectation of its founders, and become a great library, not only for general readers, but for students, scholars, and scientists. A repetition of some portions of his report, however, may be desirable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
