Book The Bridge Game

Download or read book The Bridge Game written by Nicolae Sfetcu and published by Nicolae Sfetcu. This book was released on 2014-04-25 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide of bridge game: online games, variants, suits, hand evaluation, bidding systems, techniques, strategy, tactics. Contract bridge, usually known simply as bridge, is a trick-taking card game of skill for four players, usually sitting around a table, who form two partnerships, or "sides". The partners on each side sit opposite one another. The game consists of two main parts – bidding (or auction) and play; the rules of play are rather simple and similar to other trick-taking games. However, the bidding and associated conventions are much more complex, and represent the true learning barrier to new players. Also, there is an immense variety of techniques in play of the hand, whose effective use requires learning and experience.

Book excerpt: "If defence is the hardest part of playing bridge (and it is!) then defending at matchpoint scoring is the toughest challenge a player can face. Every trick matters, irrespective of the contract, and every decision is potentially critical. In his previous book, "Thinking on Defence", Jim Priebe introduced the idea of visualization, picturing likely hands for declarer and basing defensive strategy on those. In this book, he show how to apply the same methods when playing in matchpoint events, which means essentially every pairs competition."--Publisher description.

Book Game Set and Match

Download or read book Game Set and Match written by Herbert Warren Wind and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2016-01-26 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The leading players and outstanding matches of two thrilling decades in tennis history From Rod Laver’s amateur Grand Slam in 1962 to the first US Open held at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, legendary sportswriter Herbert Warren Wind captures the grace and drama of modern tennis in this brilliant collection drawn from the pages of the New Yorker. The era’s biggest names, including Margaret Court, Chris Evert, John Newcombe, Arthur Ashe, and Pancho Gonzales, thrill the crowds of Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and Forest Hills, and America’s Davis Cup team battles patriotic linesmen and frenzied fans in an epic showdown against the Romanians in Bucharest. In “Mrs. King versus Mr. Riggs,” Wind paints a witty and evocative portrait of Billy Jean King’s historic beatdown of Bobby Riggs, and in “Forest Hills and the Final Between Connors and Borg,” he vividly recounts one of the wildest and woolliest tournaments in the sport’s history. Rendered with the same authority and eloquence that led the New York Times to declare Wind the dean of American golf writers, these dispatches from center court testify to the celebrated journalist’s passion and versatility.
