Book Confessions of a Plagiarist

Download or read book Confessions of a Plagiarist written by Kevin Kopelson and published by Counterpath. This book was released on 2012 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary Nonfiction. Memoir. In college, Kevin Kopelson passed off a paper by his older brother Robert as his own. In graduate school, he plagiarized nearly an entire article from a respected scholar, and then later, having met her and been asked if he would send something for her to read, sent that essay he had plagiarized from her work. This is not to mention the many instances in which he quoted others extensively, not passing their work off as his own, but substituting it for his own words when his words were what were called for. Until recently, such plagiarisms and thefts had been his most shameful secret, shared only with a trusted few. But then Kopelson—now an English professor and the author of a number of respected books, most recently 2007's Sedaris—wrote an essay entitled "My Cortez," which was published in the London Review of Books in 2008. It was a satirical literary confession, an exploration of Kopelson's personal and professional life via his various acts of plagiarism. From that jumping off point and exploring also his other vices, CONFESSIONS OF A PLAGIARIST is the compelling and clever retelling (not to mention renovation) of Kopelson's life, one transgression at a time.

Book excerpt: Expedition Pointe is a college bar and grill located between two colleges. Its about three miles from Lewis College, a liberal arts institution that offers degrees in many areas, including premed. I graduated from Lewis College two years ago with a degree in premed, and now Im at Clark College, located about five miles on the other side of Expedition Pointe. Clark College is a medical school that is associated with Lewis College and the local medical center. Both colleges are located east of St. Louis and hidden among many thick-wooded areas in the little community of Kathleen, Missouri. People dont even realize the colleges are present if they are not a part of the collegiate environment. Both schools have famous alumni that include presidents, political figures, actors, and actresses, as well as authors, doctors, and such. I feel fortunate to be among their alumni.

Book excerpt: "A deep, weird and uncanny tale" —Sheila Heti "A book to devour"—Iain Reid "Sinister good fun" —Lee Henderson "Gripping and unassumingly smart" —Lauren Oyler A journalist with a history of bending the facts uncovers a story about a medical breakthrough so astonishing it needs no embellishment--but behind the game-changing science lies a gruesome secret. A respected byline in the culture pages of the venerable New York magazine The Bystander, journalist Whitney Chase grapples with a mysterious compulsion to enhance her coverage with intriguing untruths and undetectable white lies. She calls it "the creep"--an overpowering need to improve the story in the telling. And she has a particular genius for getting away with it. In the immediate aftermath of 9/11, Whitney yearns to transition from profiling rock stars and novelists to covering the stories that "really matter." When a chance encounter brings her face-to-face with a potentially massive story about a game-changing medical discovery, Whitney believes she's finally found a story that doesn't need any enhancement. The brilliant and charismatic doctor behind the breakthrough claims she's found "the Holy Grail of medical science": a synthetic blood substitute that, if viable, promises to save millions of lives, and make her corporate backers rich beyond measure. But when Whitney's investigation of this apparent medical miracle puts her on the trail of a string of grisly fatalities across the country, she becomes inexorably tied to a much darker and more nefarious story than even she could imagine. Set against the ramp-up to the US invasion of Iraq and the decline of print journalism, Michael LaPointe's panoramic, ingeniously plotted debut paints an affecting portrait of an increasingly unequal twenty-first century, exploring how deceitfulness, self-enhancement, and confidently delivered lies can be transfused into fact and constitute a broader violence against the social fabric and public trust.
