Book Mata Ortiz Pottery Buyer s Guide

Download or read book Mata Ortiz Pottery Buyer s Guide written by Philip Stover and published by . This book was released on 2016-05-16 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phil has written one of the first guides to buying and collecting Mata Ortiz pottery. This little book will provide the beginning and veteran collector with valuable information about the village of Mata Ortiz and its pottery. He will not tell you who or what to buy, but will guide you through the process, no matter your preference. We understand that preference is personal. We will not try and steer you to anyone or any one style of pottery. What we will do is explain a little history of the village, the pottery phenomenon, how the pottery is made, and what questions to ask if you want to buy. We will add a few details about getting here to the village and what to expect when you come. This book is written from a village perspective. The author lives full-time in the village and knows the potters and the pottery. He sponsors the village baseball team and serves on the village water commission! He and his wife have dug clay and manganese and have seen the process from start to finish. They know enough to leave the pottery making to those with the amazing talent to turn the bounty of the earth into the beauty of your home. The author brings a strong historical sense to the collector. The purpose of the book is not to speak for the potter. They are fully capable of doing that for themselves. Phil simply knows first-hand the experience of coming to the village for the first time and has over a decade of experience of many trips, ultimately building a home for his family along the beauty of the Palanganas River. Phil will not sell you a pot, nor lead you to the pot or potter "you should buy!" There will be few names mentioned in this book. The style, potter, and price are up to you. This is your basic guide to the world of Mata Ortiz. In a few pages, we hope to help you become a devotee of the village and its wonderful people. Bien venido a Mata Ortiz! Mata Ortiz Pottery Buyer's Guide is available as a Kindle eBook and as a paperback. In the eBook version the photos are in full color; the paperback photos are black and white. Otherwise, the text is identical in both.

It is a brief book designed to acquaint prospective Mata Ortiz pottery buyers with the pottery, the village of Mata Ortiz and how to buy the pottery by asking the right questions. It includes instructions on how to get to the village from the United States. It also highlights alternatives things to do in the region of Mata Ortiz. I have included a history of the village and the pottery industry. I do not recommend either styles or specific potters. This book is meant to be a convenient guide that can be packed in a suitcase for easy travel.

Book Mata Ortiz Pottery Today

Download or read book Mata Ortiz Pottery Today written by Guy Berger and published by Schiffer Pub Limited. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This distinctive pottery, made for use and for show at the village of Mata Ortiz, Mexico, evolved from Juan Quezada's first efforts in 1974 into a business that involves the village and now employs around 350 potters. Six distinct styles are presented: black, polychrome, sgraffito (etched), colored, miniature, and special shapes. Bowls, plates, vessels, and delightful figural pieces have recognizable glazes and coloring that have made Mata Ortiz pottery welcome in many ceramics collections today. This fresh and comprehensive book includes a fascinating discussion of similarities in the bird motif with Acoma Pueblo (New Mexico) pottery. Private and gallery pottery collections were studied, making this a thorough presentation of old and new work. Each form is described with the maker's name, decorative details, and dimensions. Estimated retail values are suggested as a general guide. Both older and emerging artists are well represented, making this an important reference for the classic forms, current styles, and future designs.

Book Collector s Guide to Buying Antique Pottery Porcelain

Download or read book Collector s Guide to Buying Antique Pottery Porcelain written by Rachael Feild and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of antique pottery and porcelain is a favourite hunting ground for collectors, but English ceramics is a complicated subject, and the division into pottery and porcelain is almost arbitrary with few clear-cut distinctions. Many shapes have been made in different kinds of paste and body, and similar patterns have been used on a great variety of products. So how does a dealer assess the quality and value of a piece? What are the most desirable and collectable pieces? The rarest? The most sought-after at today's market prices? And when is it worth buying a piece that is chipped or cracked? This guide aims to provide the answers and is designed to show quickly and clearly the difference between pottery and porcelain and to give all the essential information on the key pieces made over the centuries.
