Book Advanced Problems in Mathematics

Download or read book Advanced Problems in Mathematics written by Stephen Siklos and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-16 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new and expanded edition is intended to help candidates prepare for entrance examinations in mathematics and scientific subjects, including STEP (Sixth Term Examination Paper). STEP is an examination used by Cambridge Colleges for conditional offers in mathematics. They are also used by some other UK universities and many mathematics departments recommend that their applicants practice on the past papers even if they do not take the examination. Advanced Problems in Mathematics bridges the gap between school and university mathematics, and prepares students for an undergraduate mathematics course. The questions analysed in this book are all based on past STEP questions and each question is followed by a comment and a full solution. The comments direct the reader's attention to key points and put the question in its true mathematical context. The solutions point students to the methodology required to address advanced mathematical problems critically and independently. This book is a must read for any student wishing to apply to scientific subjects at university level and for anyone interested in advanced mathematics.

Book Introduction to Clifford Analysis

Download or read book Introduction to Clifford Analysis written by Johan Ceballos and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2020 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book pursues to exhibit how we can construct a Clifford type algebra from the classical one. The basic idea of these lecture notes is to show how to calculate fundamental solutions to either first-order differential operators of the form D=∑_(i=0)^n▒〖e_i δ_i〗or second-order elliptic differential operators ̄D D, both with constant coefficients or combinations of this kind of operators. After considering in detail how to find the fundamental solution we study the problem of integral representations in a classical Clifford algebra and in a dependent-parameter Clifford algebra which generalizes the classical one. We also propose a basic method to extend the order of the operator, for instance D^n,n∈N and how to produce integral representations for higher order operators and mixtures of them. Although the Clifford algebras have produced many applications concerning boundary value problems, initial value problems, mathematical physics, quantum chemistry, among others; in this book we do not discuss these topics as they are better discussed in other courses. Researchers and practitioners will find this book very useful as a source book. The reader is expected to have basic knowledge of partial differential equations and complex analysis. When planning and writing these lecture notes, we had in mind that they would be used as a resource by mathematics students interested in understanding how we can combine partial differential equations and Clifford analysis to find integral representations. This in turn would allow them to solve boundary value problems and initial value problems. To this end, proofs have been described in rigorous detail and we have included numerous worked examples. On the other hand, exercises have not been included.

Book Lectures on Differential Geometry

Download or read book Lectures on Differential Geometry written by Su Buchin and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 1981-01-01 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a set of notes based on lectures delivered by Prof. Su Buchin at Fudan University, Shanghai in 1978 and 1979 to graduate students as well as teachers from other institutions in China. Some selected topics in global differential geometry are dealt with. Certain areas of classical differential geometry based on modern approach are presented in Lectures 1, 3 and 4. Lecture 2 is on integral geometry on the Euclidean plane. It is abridged from W Blaschke's Vorlesungen Ulber Integralgeometrie. In Lecture 5, Cartan's exterior differential forms are introduced. Fruitful applications in this area by Profs S S Chern and C C Hsiung are also discussed.

Book Mathematics Mathematics Education Searching for Common Ground

Download or read book Mathematics Mathematics Education Searching for Common Ground written by Michael N. Fried and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-29 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the fruit of a symposium in honor of Ted Eisenberg concerning the growing divide between the mathematics community and the mathematics education community, a divide that is clearly unhealthy for both. The work confronts this disturbing gap by considering the nature of the relationship between mathematics education and mathematics, and by examining areas of commonality as well as disagreement. It seeks to provide insight into the mutual benefit both stand to gain by building bridges based on the natural bonds between them.

Book Group Theory in Physics

Download or read book Group Theory in Physics written by Wu-Ki Tung and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 1985-08-31 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introductory text book for graduates and advanced undergraduates on group representation theory. It emphasizes group theory's role as the mathematical framework for describing symmetry properties of classical and quantum mechanical systems. Familiarity with basic group concepts and techniques is invaluable in the education of a modern-day physicist. This book emphasizes general features and methods which demonstrate the power of the group-theoretical approach in exposing the systematics of physical systems with associated symmetry. Particular attention is given to pedagogy. In developing the theory, clarity in presenting the main ideas and consequences is given the same priority as comprehensiveness and strict rigor. To preserve the integrity of the mathematics, enough technical information is included in the appendices to make the book almost self-contained. A set of problems and solutions has been published in a separate booklet. Request Inspection Copy
