Book Masterpieces of Italian Violin Making 1620 1850

Download or read book Masterpieces of Italian Violin Making 1620 1850 written by David Rattray and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2000-12-13 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a unique view of the work of the great Italian violin-makers from the 17th to the 19th centuries, based on the collection of The Royal Academy of Music in London. The Academy, founded in 1822, is Britain's senior conservatory and one of the oldest institutions in the world for advanced musical training. Included here are masterpieces by Amati, Cappa, Celoniato, Ceruti, Dalla Costa, Deconet, Gagliano, Grancino, Guadagnini, Guarneri, Landolfi, Pressenda, Rota, Rugeri, Seraphin, Sorsana, Stradivari, Tecchler, and Testore. This revised edition has an updated descriptive text, features 15 extra entries, devotes at least two full-color spreads to each instrument, and is supplemented with a new dendrochronological study. Specially-commissioned photographs display each violin, viola, or cello with large, high-quality illustrations, revealing details of these instruments as never before. The Academy's collection of stringed instruments consists of around 100 violins and a similar combined number of violas and celli, the majority of which were received as gifts over the last century, beginning with the Rutson Bequest in 1906. These working instruments are maintained in fine playing condition and generally are in the hands of young musicians during their time as students or at the outset of their careers. The fine selection presented here underlines the collection's core of masterpiece Italian violins, and for the most part this book includes only those instruments in the purest state of conservation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Violin: Its Famous Makers and Their Imitators Nearly the whole of the extracts to which the reader's attention has been directed were given to me as far back as the year 1875, when the original edition of this work was in the press. Finding it impossible to make adequate use of them, in consequence of the volume being partly printed, I decided to insert a few items at the end of the notice of Antonio Stradivari, and to hold over the remainder in order to distribute the information among the notices of the several makers in a future edition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cremona: An Account of the Italian Violin-Makers and Their Instruments Although many experts have already set forth the result of their knowledge and skill in publications of more or less merit on the subject of bowed instruments, there is still a want which it would be as desirable as praiseworthy to supply, that is, as regards the characteristic features of the Italian masters of the art of violin-making. The Author has set himself the task of collecting, as much from the actual instruments themselves, as from ancient and modern literature, both foreign and native, the names of the masters with the greatest possible accuracy and care, and also of describing the work of each individual. He has omitted to dwell upon those stringed instruments which preceded the violin, and from which it may have been developed, because those materials have been sufficiently dealt with; and he begins with the origin of the violin itself, so that the reader may learn how to estimate the genuineness and the value of the Italian instruments, so far as it may be possible from the description accorded to them. Although many instruments have passed through the Authors hands, he is still far from saying that he has seen all those which are described here. He mentions with peculiar pleasure an excellent work from which he has learnt much, and of which he has made use, and he can do this with the greater confidence because the author of that work is known to him personally as an authority of the first rank in his art. The title of this work is "The Violin: its Famous Makers and their Imitators," by George Hart. London, 1875. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Violins and Violin Makers: Biographical Dictionary of the Great Italian Artistes, Their Followers and Imitators, to the Present Time, With Essays on Important Subjects Connected With the Violin The Violin is an instrument which, though small and of trifling original cost, has yet commanded most extraordinary prices. The reason of the immense difference in the value of these instru ments must therefore be a subject possessing strong claims to notice from virtuoso and amateur. To distinguish by the outward characteristics and peculiarities of tone, that which will be of pecuniary value to the possessor, and yield the utmost delight to the bearer, is an acquirement at once difficult to obtain and very valuable when obtained. To assist the amateur and collector in this pursuit is the object of the present little work. Such a work has long been a desideratum.
