Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this original collection, several of today's finest writers introduce little-known treasures of literature that they count among their favorite books. Here Toni Morrison celebrates a great Guinean storyteller whose novel of mystical adventure and surprising revelation transforms our image of Africa, while Susan Sontag raises the curtain on a distant summer when three of the greatest poets of the twentieth century exchanged love letters like no others. Here too John Updike analyzes the rare art of an English comic genius, Jonathan Lethem considers a hard-boiled and heartbreaking story of prison life, and Michael Cunningham uncovers the secrets of what may well be the finest short novel in modern American literature. Other contributors include such noted authors as Arthur C. Danto, Lydia Davis, Elizabeth Hardwick, Francine Prose, Lucy Sante, Colm Tóibín, Eliot Weinberger, and James Wood. Lucid, polished, provocative, inspiring, these essays are models of critical appreciation, offering personal, impassioned, thoughtful responses to a wide range of wonderful books. Unknown Masterpieces is a treat for all lovers of great writing and a useful and stimulating guidebook for readers eager to venture off literature's beaten tracks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prose Masterpieces From Modern Essayists Ladies and gentlemen, - I have under taken to speak to you this evening on what is called the Science of History. Ifear it is a dry subject: and there seems, indeed, some thing incongruous in the very connection of such words as Science and History. It is as if we were to talk of the color of sound, or the longitude of the Rule-oi-three. Where it is so difficult to make out the truth on the com monest disputed fact in matters passing under our very eyes, how can we talk of a science in things long past, which come to us only through books? It often seems to me as if History was like a child's box of letters, with which we can spell any word we please. We have only to pick out such letters as we want, arrange them as we like, and say nothing about those which dc not suit our purpose. Iwill try to make the thing intelligible, and I will try not to weary you; but I am doubtful of my success either way. First, however, I wish to say a word or two about the eminent person whose name is connected with this way of looking at History, and whose premature death struck us all with such a sudden sorrow. Many of you, perhaps, recollect Mr. Buckle as he stood not so long ago in this place. He spoke more than an hour without a note, never repeating himself, never wasting words; laying out his matter as easily and as pleas antly as if he had been talking to us at his own fireside. We might think what we pleased of Mr. Buckle's Views, but it was plain enough that he was a man of uncommon power; and he had qualities also - qualities to which he, perhaps, himself attached little value - as rare as they were admirable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masterpieces of Prose: Selected From the Works of the Greatest English and American Writers; From Chaucer to Ruskin and Longfellow There is no royal road to literary success. He who writes entertainingly writes suc cessfully he who writes nobly writes for immortality. The world's masterpieces of liter ature are not confined to any one age; neither do they always need the halo of time or the flavor of antiquity to gain acceptance. Genius works as well in one generation as in another, and the writer of today is capable of as good and as lasting work as was he who created in the time of Addison, or he who labored in the days of Bacon. So these Masterpieces of Prose, gathered in this volume, are selected, rather as specimens than as a completed galaxy, from the writers of to-day and from those to whom age has brought the verdict classic. In the main, they are but brief extracts, chosen rather to afford a taste than a full banquet with each author. If they shall serve as an en couragement to more extended reading, or a closer acquaintance with any or all of the writers represented in this volume, the labor of choice and selection will not have been in vain, and the idea of grouping into a single volume representative extracts from a whole library of English authors will have proved itself a wise and happy suggestion. Both England and America have been drawn upon for sources of selection, and in giving this volume to the public due credit and hearty thanks are herewith accorded to the following American publishers by whose permission, or under arrangement with whom, copyrighted matter has been allowed to appear in this volume Houghton, Mitflin Co., Roberts Brothers, Estes Lauriat, and Lee Shepard, of Boston; Harper 8: Brothers Charles Scribner's Sons, G. P. Putnam's Sons, D. Appleton Co., and Fords, Howard Hulbert of New York; I. B. Lippincott Company and T. B. Peterson 81 Brothers, of Philadelphia.
