Book excerpt: Faust is Goethe's magnum opus and considered by many to be one of the greatest works of German literature. The story takes place in multiple settings, the first of which is heaven. Mephistopheles makes a bet with God – he says that he can lure God's favorite human being – Faust, who is striving to learn everything that can be known, away from righteous pursuits. Faust makes an arrangement with the devil – the devil will do everything that Faust wants while he is here on Earth, and in exchange Faust will serve the devil in Hell. In Faust, Goethe focuses on social phenomena such as psychology, history and politics, in addition to mystical and philosophical topics. In contrast to Faust Part One, in Part Two, the focus is no longer on the soul of Faust, which has been sold to the devil, but rather on social phenomena such as psychology, history and politics, in addition to mystical and philosophical topics. The second part formed the principal occupation of Goethe's last years. This edition brings to you the complete Faust (Part One and Two) for your complete reading pleasure along with the lesser known Coleridge translation. This meticulously edited collection is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents: Faust - Faust (Part One) - Faust (Part Two) - Faustus (Translated by Samuel Taylor Coleridge) Criticisms: Life of Johann Wolfgang Goethe (James Sime) Goethe: The Writer (Ralph Waldo Emerson) Byron and Goethe (Giuseppe Mazzini) The Faust-Legend and Goethe's 'Faust' (H. B. Cotterill)

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) adopted the story of the wandering conjuror who accepts Mephistopheles's offer of a pact, selling his soul for the devil's greaterknowledge; over a period of 60 years he produced one of the greatest dramatic and poetic masterpieces of European literature.David Luke's recent translation, specially commissioned for The World's Classics series, has all the virtues of previous classic translations of Faust, and none of their shortcomings. Cast in rhymed verse, following the original, it preserves the essence of Goethe's meaning without sacrifice toarchaism or over-modern idiom. It is as near an `equivalent' rendering of the German as has been achieved.

Book excerpt: Faust is a tragic play in two parts by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, usually known in English as Faust, Part One and Faust, Part Two. Nearly all of Part One and the majority of Part Two are written in rhymed verse. Although rarely staged in its entirety, it is the play with the largest audience numbers on German-language stages. Faust is considered by many to be Goethe's magnum opus and the greatest work of German literature. The earliest forms of the work, known as the Urfaust, were developed between 1772 and 1775; however, the details of that development are not entirely clear. Urfaust has twenty-two scenes, one in prose, two largely prose and the remaining 1,441 lines in rhymed verse. The manuscript is lost, but a copy was discovered in 1886. The first appearance of the work in print was Faust, a Fragment, published in 1790. Goethe completed a preliminary version of what is now known as Part One in 1806. Its publication in 1808 was followed by the revised 1828-29 edition, the last to be edited by Goethe himself. Goethe finished writing Faust, Part Two in 1831; it was published posthumously the following year. In contrast to Faust, Part One, the focus here is no longer on the soul of Faust, which has been sold to the devil, but rather on social phenomena such as psychology, history and politics, in addition to mystical and philosophical topics. The second part formed the principal occupation of Goethe's last years. (wikipedia.org)

Divided into two parts, the play tells the story of the scholar Faust, who makes a pact with the devil, Mephistopheles, in exchange for worldly pleasures and limitless knowledge. At the heart of the narrative is Faust's relentless pursuit of knowledge and experience, which leads him on a journey of self-discovery and moral reckoning. Through his encounters with Mephistopheles and various other characters, Faust grapples with questions of morality, free will, and the nature of existence. Goethe's "Faust" is celebrated for its rich language, complex characters, and profound philosophical insights. The play delves into the depths of human desire and aspiration, exploring the consequences of unchecked ambition and the search for meaning in a world fraught with temptation and disillusionment. In addition to its philosophical depth, "Faust" is also renowned for its theatricality and dramatic spectacle. From Faust's encounter with the seductive Gretchen to his journey through the classical world and beyond, Goethe's play is filled with vivid imagery and powerful scenes that continue to captivate audiences to this day. "Faust" is widely regarded as one of the greatest works of Western literature, and Goethe's exploration of the Faustian bargain has left an indelible mark on the literary and cultural landscape. With its timeless themes and enduring relevance, "Faust" remains a masterpiece of world literature that continues to inspire and provoke readers with its profound insights into the human condition.

Desperate, frustrated, and suicidal, he makes a deal with Mephistopheles, an agent of the devil. Signed in blood, the contract states that Mephistopheles will obey Faust on Earth, but in return, Faust must serve him in Hell. Faust is unaware that the pact is part of a wager that God and Mephistopheles have made over the fate of his immortal soul. Mephistopheles gives Faust anything and everything he wants, but is it worth the pain and suffering it causes Faust's loved ones? This is an unabridged version of German author Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's tragic play, first published in 1808, and translated by American poet Bayard Taylor in 1870.
