Book Masterpieces on Japan by Foreign Authors

Download or read book Masterpieces on Japan by Foreign Authors written by Shōichi Saeki and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-23 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book includes forty-one chapters about foreign observers’ discourses on Japan. These include a wide range of perspectives from the travelogues of curious visitors to academic theses by scholars, which offer us a broad spectrum of contents, reflecting a variety of attitudes toward Japan. The works were written during the period from the 1850s to the 1980s, a timespan during which Japan became, in stages, more open to the outside world after a long isolation under the Tokugawa shogunate. From the perspective of “Japanology,” one can discern three distinct periods of rising interest in the country from abroad. The first tide of such interest came shortly after the opening of Japan, when various foreign travelers, including those who could not be included in this book, came over and wrote down their impressions of the country—which was, for them, a land of mystery and mystique, which had just opened its doors to them. The second wave arose at the beginning of the twentieth century, just after the Russo-Japanese War, when Japan again generated a remarkable surge of interest as a “miracle” in Asia that had pulled off the wondrous feat of defeating a white superpower. The third wave was more recent, which took place from the late 1960s to the 1980s, a period of high economic growth when the “miracle” of Japan’s remarkable economic recovery from the defeat of World War II attracted enthusiastic and curious attention from the outside world once again. It is not the intention of this book to directly highlight such historical transitions, but these forty-two brilliant mirrors (forty-one chapters, including forty-two discourses), even when looked in casually, provide us with unexpected insights and various perspectives. Shōichi Saeki (1922–2016) was Professor Emeritus, the University of Tokyo. Tōru Haga (1931–2020) was Professor Emeritus, International Research Center for Japanese Studies.

Book Greatest Books You ll Never Read

Download or read book Greatest Books You ll Never Read written by Bernard Richards and published by Cassell. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why was Thomas Hardy's first novel never published? What happened to the manuscript of the long promised 'magnum opus' that Truman Capote never delivered? Why did Heinrich Böll abandon his Paradise Lost? These and many other intriguing mysteries are uncovered in this comprehensive guide to literature's lost and unfinished masterpieces. From a creative crisis to a dissatisfied editor, and from a bizarre twist of fate to an untimely death, behind each unpublished book lies a unique and compelling story. One of the giants of modern literature, Ernest Hemingway, saw three years of work, including a novel and several short stories, vanish when his wife's suitcase was stolen in the Gare de Lyon in Paris. Evelyn Waugh, on the other hand, burned the manuscript of his first novel and attempted to drown himself after a friend gave it a bad review. Covering an eclectic range of international authors, both living and dead, The Greatest Books You'll Never Read unearths an alternative literary history that is fascinating and heartbreaking in equal measure. Each ill-fated book, from Karl Marx's comic novel Scorpion and Felix to Stephenie Meyer's Twilight spin-off Midnight Sun, is examined in an in-depth essay, with selected entries featuring manuscript extracts. Specially commissioned covers by acclaimed designers illustrate each entry, bringing to life these lost literary wonders. At once entertaining and enlightening, The Greatest Books You'll Never Read will be loved by bookworms everywhere. Erica Jarnes worked as an editor at Bloomsbury for eight years before becoming Literature Programmer at the South Bank Centre. She is involved in organizing Port Eliot Festival, a prestigious literary gathering that attracts authors from around the globe, and is passionate about promoting translated fiction. Book Half Hours With the Best Foreign Authors Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Half Hours With the Best Foreign Authors Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Charles Morris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Half-Hours With the Best Foreign Authors, Vol. 1 There is no satisfactory reason, then, why those who speak English only should not enjoy the masterpieces of literature of the whole world, in versions which preserve all the value of the ideas, and which equal or closely ap proach their originals in beauty of rhetoric and grace of expression. It has been our purpose, in the work which we hereby introduce to our readers, to glean from the broad harvest-field of English translations of foreign liter ature a series of half-hour readings, selected from the writings of those who have won an acknowledged position among the world's best authors, and of those of secondary merit to whose writings some originality of style, interest of subject, or peculiarity of treatment has given a per manent abiding-place in the world of books. These selec tions properly divide into four sections: namely, the litera tures of Greece and Rome; those of the German and other Teutonic nations; that of France; and those of Spain and Italy. For the convenience of readers we have, therefore, arranged our work in four volumes, each embracing one of the above-named provinces, while a few selections from the literatures of minor importance, such as the Portuguese and the Russian, have been given in the fourth volume.
