Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In competitive sports we prize teamwork. We know that a mature team will usually beat an astounding collection of individual players. The burden of creating such esprit de corps falls to the coach and the team of leaders he has assembled. After all, a team without a coach cannot win. But what happens when the coach himself does not understand the dynamics of teamwork? In a similar manner, every leader of every church is a coach of sorts, with a ministry team responsible for the life of the church. The question put to you as a pastor is this: Are you a team player? Even more to the point: Whose team are you building?Too many church leaders, writes author Kenn Gangel, have fallen into the trap of personal kingdom-building, a focused concern on one's own and present ministry without a wider recognition of kingdom participation. The net effect of this condition has led to narrow vision, stunted church growth, and frustrated relationships within the body of Christ. In contrast, Gangel explores broad and penetrating support throughout the Word of God for team-based, inclusive, cooperative leadership. From Jethro's advice to Moses all the way to Jesus's approach to discipleship, biblical leadership is viewed as a tool to be shared--a model of servanthood, mentoring, and the mutual interdependence of gifts.Along the way Gangel explores the character attributes of successful biblical leadership--common things like humility, patience, and quiet dignity. From there he reveals how these qualities open an authentic leader up to the wide and thrilling possibilities of working hand-in-hand with others in the Lord's work...together.

Book excerpt: What makes a leader a Christian leader? Too many churches and parachurch groups operate under secular leadership principles and strategies without considering what Scripture teaches. In this accessible and comprehensive book, leadership expert Aubrey Malphurs articulates a working definition of Christian leadership based on the Bible and his own extensive research. Malphurs begins by defining a uniquely Christian leader from the inside out, from godly character and commitment to pure motives and a servant attitude. He examines the leaders of the first-century church and then discusses qualities such as credibility, capability, and influence that are essential for successful leadership. Each chapter contains helpful questions for reflection and discussion. The appendix includes numerous audits to help readers evaluate themselves on various leadership components. Being Leaders is the first book of a two-part series on leadership. The companion book will address the how-to of building leaders.

Book Be the Director I Could Follow

    Book Details:
  • Author : MR Earl D Taylor
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2016-07-09
  • ISBN : 9781530981113
  • Pages : 234 pages

Download or read book Be the Director I Could Follow written by MR Earl D Taylor and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-07-09 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Pearson writes in his foreword: Harvard Business Review's classic article, "7 Surprises for the New CEO," is a wake-up call for both corporate and nonprofit leaders - including camp directors. Surprise Number Five is a shocker: "You Are Not the Boss." Few articles and books equal the honesty and warnings from these co-authors. So I was blessed and privileged when Earl invited me to write this foreword. His written labor of love - transparently delivered with warts and all - is a valuable survival kit for new and growing camping leaders who will find not seven, but dozens of surprises in their leadership journeys. Oh, my. How I wish Earl's wit and wisdom had been in print decades ago when I invested 11 immensely challenging (but thoroughly satisfying) years as a camp director in Illinois and Washington. I would have read this book every week! Then when I was privileged to lead what is now called Christian Camp and Conference Association (CCCA), I would have gifted his book to hundreds of struggling (but amazingly committed) men and women who loved Jesus and led remarkable camping ministries. Be the Director I Could Follow is a feast for new leaders and old leaders. In addition to Earl's savvy smarts from his in-the-trenches school of hits and misses, he's invited four of my Christian camping heroes (Dick Angelo, Brian Ogne, Enoch Olson, and Tom Robertson) to serve up their common sense approach to leadership. Brilliant! Here are six reasons you MUST read this book - and share it with your team: 1. Twitter-Worthy Quotations Sprinkled Throughout the Book. Amazing stuff! Like John Maxwell's insight: "The only thing a title can buy is a little time - either to increase your level of influence with others or to undermine it." 2. Brian Ogne's Four Principles of Funding Your Ministry. My favorite: "People give money to success, not to distress." 3. Tom Robertson's Transparent Confession. "...I needed to settle the glory issue. Either I got it or God got it. I was not meant to carry the glory belonging to God. It was so freeing to lay that burden down." 4. Enoch Olson's Sacred Task. "As the visionary I had the sacred task of proclaiming a vision of a future that did not yet exist ... for a people with the means to bring that future into a present reality." (Note: Enoch wrote his chapter at age 85 and noted, "With the help of many, my style of leadership is still improving which means it is a growing process. There are real reasons why some leaders succeed and others fail.") 5. Dick Angelo's 7-Day Prayer List. "The best practice that a young or old director can get into is to take all the cares of the week, make a list of them, and daily spend time in prayer over them. Keep that list at least a week ahead all the time. That way, one prays for the need today, as well as always praying for the needs of the next several days." Yikes! How did I miss this discernment insight? While grace abounds, I wish I had started this 50 years ago, not this week. 6. Earl Taylor's Metric That Matters Most-the Happiness File. "I do keep a close watch on the finances of the camp; without enough money, the camp begins to flounder and morale and facilities go downhill. Staff likes to be paid. But I have an even more important system to measure the success of the camp: it is called my 'happiness file.' In my desk, I keep a file of all the good reports I hear from parents, churches, and campers." Great insight - great idea! John Pearson

Book Lead Strong

    Book Details:
  • Author : Philip J. Rasmussen
  • Publisher : WestBow Press
  • Release : 2020-10-08
  • ISBN : 1664203621
  • Pages : 172 pages

Download or read book Lead Strong written by Philip J. Rasmussen and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2020-10-08 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New leaders have tremendous potential to be the next generation of church leaders, but for many, biblical character development was not a foundational part of growing up. Pastor Philip J. Rasmussen, vice president of church relations and spiritual formation at Northwest University, draws on his experience working closely with pastors and students to outline the problems to developing the next generation of church leaders—as well as solutions. He knows how concerned church leaders are with finding qualified ministerial replacements, but he also knows most students have not been prepared to live a life in ministry. If they don’t get the guidance they need, a shortage of qualified individuals looms on the horizon. Lead Strong starts with the premise that a person must fully embrace the Fruit of Spirit as the vital elements for character development. When the Fruit of Spirit is present in a believer’s life, essential leadership qualities will naturally flow as the leader influences people. This book can be used for ministry training sessions, small group studies, or one’s individual devotional development. Its purpose is to reveal the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer and to clearly describe the fruit that His presence should bear in one’s character.
