Book Chosen by the Spirits

Download or read book Chosen by the Spirits written by Sarangerel and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2001-06-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • Mongolian shamaness Sarangerel provides a hands-on guide for serious students of the shamanic path. • Includes complete directions for traditional Siberian rituals, meditations, and divination techniques never before published. • Shows how to recognize and acknowledge a call from the spirits. • Offers traditional wisdom for nurturing a working relationship with personal spirit helpers to promote healing and balance in a community. The shaman's purpose is to heal and restore balance to his or her community by developing a working relationship with the spirit world. Mongolian shamanic tradition maintains that all true shamans are called by the spirits--but those who are not from shamanic cultures may have difficulty recognizing the call or nurturing the essential shamanic relationship with their helper spirits. Buryat shamaness Sarangerel has written Chosen by the Spirits as a guide for both the beginning shaman and the advanced practitioner. Although raised in the United States, she was drawn to the shamanic tradition, and in 1991 returned to her ancestral homeland in the Tunken region of southern Siberia to study with traditional Buryat shamans. Her first book, Riding Windhorses, provided an introduction to the shamanic world of Siberia. Chosen by the Spirits delves more deeply into the personal relationship between the shamanic student and his or her "spirit family." Sarangerel recounts her own journey into shamanic practice and provides the serious student with practical advice and hands-on techniques for recognizing and acknowledging a shamanic calling, welcoming and embodying the spirits, journeying to the spirit world, and healing both people and places.

Download or read book Another View written by Nicholas P. Snoek and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Another View is a study of revelation in which a fictional setting is used to explore revealed religion and its background. The fictional setting provides a narrative structure to what is otherwise a journey from the infinite past to the current situation as regards revelation in history and in philosophical/theological conceptual development. This book is not an exercise of exegesis but a source material is never treated lightly. Only the fictional setting has a patina of entertainment and some grounding in the world of solids. To wit, there are no footnotes—scholarship is not intrusive, but it does build the book.

Book Traveling Spirit Masters

Download or read book Traveling Spirit Masters written by Deborah Kapchan and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2023-09-05 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A group of ritual musicians and former slaves brought from sub-Saharan Africa to Morocco, the Gnawa heal those they believe to be possessed, using incense, music, and trance. But their practice is hardly of only local interest: the Gnawa have long participated in the world music market through collaborations with African-American jazz musicians and French recording artists. In this first book in English on Gnawa music and its global reach, author Deborah Kapchan explores how these collaborations transfigure racial and musical identities on both sides of the Atlantic. She also addresses how aesthetic styles associated with the sacred come to inhabit non-sacred contexts, and what new amalgams they produce. Her narrative details the fascinating intrinsic properties of trance, including details of enactment, the role of gesture and the body, and the use of the senses, and how they both construct authentic Gnawa identity and reconstruct historically determined relations of power. Traveling Spirit Masters is a captivating and elucidating demonstration of how and why trance—and indeed all sacred music—is fast becoming a transnational sensation.

Book Evil Spirits and Rocket Debris

Download or read book Evil Spirits and Rocket Debris written by Ludek Broz and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2024-02-02 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Altai Republic in southern Siberia is renowned for excavations of frozen mummies from high-altitude burial sites. Less well-known is the fact that it hosts fallout zones for the second stages of rockets launched from the Baikonur cosmodrome. Local inhabitants blame ‘evil spirits’ released by archaeological work and toxic fuel from rocket debris for their misfortunes. This book explores the divergent fates of such claims when confronted with state-fostered ‘rationalisms’ of science and governance.
