The one upon the shore was the oldest and largest house in the valley, severely simple in line and with a certain air of stateliness. The broad, Colonial porch looked out upon the river and the hills beyond it, while all around, Upon the southern slope between the Opposite hills and the valley, were the great vineyards Of the Marshs', that had descended from father to son during the century that had elapsed since the house was built. The gnarled and twisted vines scarcely showed now, Upon the grey-brown back ground of the soil, but in a few places, where the snow had not yet melted, the tangled black threads were visible. Like the frame surrounding a tapestry, great pines bordered the vineyard save on the side nearest the valley, for the first of the Marshs, who had planted the vineyard and built the house, had taken care to protect his vines from the north-east storms. The clanging notes of a bell, mellowed by distance, came faintly from the valley below. Rosemary took out the thin, old watch that had been her mother's and her mother's mother's before her, and set the hands at four upon thefamily to venture out, scampered madly up a tree and looked down upon the girl with questioning, fearful eyes. She rose from the log and looked up, with her hands outstretched in unconscious pleading. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of the Master: A Poem For some time past my mind has been led to contemplate the life and doctrines of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. So deeply was my mind impressed that I felt impelled to commit them to manuscript. My failing health and eyesight, during the time employed in writing these verses, seem to have been compensated by a stronger appreciation of the simplicity of the Savior's teachings - their adaptability to the human wants, and the sublime grandeur of His sufferings and death for the redemption of the human family. Dear Brother Jones: I return herewith the typewritten copy of your story in verse entitled, "The Life of the Master." I have read it with much interest and feel that it cannot fail to do good to all who read it; it is the old story beautifully retold. I trust the poem will be read by many. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Vineyard at Lakeview When I first took up rural pursuits as my vocation, I Was not altogether unacquainted with the theories and principles which pertain to them. From my boyhood, I have always had a great fondness for gardening, and all labor incident to country life. When learning my trade in the Village printing office, I took great delight in read ing all the agricultural and horticultural exchanges. My companion apprentice, Bob, as we called him then, always thought it stupid to read papers of that kind, preferring, for himself, to follow up with great care all political con troversies, and taking great delight at the complete sum mersaults which expert politicians (in those days) some times found it convenient to make. Many of these horticultural publications I took possession of, by permis sion of the editor, and carefully preserved. I now consider them one of the important features of my little library. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Vineyard: A Plea for Christian Work The attention of believers is being drawn to the matter of christian Won]: as never before since the days of the apostles. It is high time. Nineteen cen tuties of our era have nearly gone, and yet the greater part of the world is lying in almost utter ignorance of the gospel and even in so-called Christian countries, most of the people are in an unconverted and perishing state. What a clarion-summons \in such facts! Is it being suficiently heeded? With all the gain lately made (and that it is very great let us joyfully confess), it is still true, that most professing Christians, even of those not unexemplary in other respects, are doing very little to spread the religion they accept. Only by courtesy can they be called laborer: in the vineyard. They are not even in the market-place, waiting for work. The Master is not yet done saying, The har vest truly is great, but the laborers are few: pray ye, therefore, the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth laborers into his harvest. The aim of this volume is altogether practical. It seeks to promote that active efiort in the cause of Christ which his law requires, and which the needs of a world in large part still lying in wickedness beg for with most affecting importunity, but which is still so insufficiently granted. And this end is sought, first, by the persuasion of illustrious examples, and, secondb', by such appeals, as, without a show of argument, but with all its substance, may present in an orderly and vivid manner the leading principles, methods, and te wards oi work in the Vineyard. Download or read book The Man and the Master Classic Reprint written by James E. Freeman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Man and the Master The following pages, suggested by a series of sermons preached on this subject, are not designed to set forth in any chronological order the Life of the Master; they simply deal with certain phases or aspects of that life and seek to lay emphasis upon its cardinal characteristics. To bring the divine life within the sphere of ordinary human intelligence is but to seek to accomplish and fulfil the Divine plan. That Christ sought to do this, is evident on every page of the Gospel story. Indeed it was His very effort in this direction that baffled and confounded His critics; that He could come within the limitations of our life, be partaker with us of its conditions, experience its wants and its desires, feel its pangs and suffer its pains; all this seemed to the Hebrew mind to unfit Him for Messiahship. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grand Master's Treasure IN giving to the public this volume, which I am led to believe is the first work of fiction dealing with the principles and members of the Inde pendent Order Of Odd Fellows, I trust that it will be received in the same spirit in which it was written. The good of the Order has been the underlying thought, and my chief desire has been to so bring before the uninitiated something of the spirit of our beloved Order that the world at large may recognize its advantages and uplift ing influence, and seek admission. There cannot be too many Odd Fellows and Rebekahs. On April 30, 1894, I became a Rebekah, and on the same occasion was installed as the first Noble Grand of Riverview Rebekah Lodge, No. 49, I. O. O. F., of Bucksport, Maine; and in the year 1897 I was retired from the Office of President of the Rebekah State Assembly. Owing to change of residence, I have been unable to visit the home lodge for several years, but I have ever kept in close touch with it. During this period I have vis ited many lodges nearer my dwelling place and have been most cordially welcomed.
