Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Master Christopher Of all the estates inherited by his father, the late General Sir Anthony Denys, he possessed only one small farm, and this deep-walled, lattice-windowed, many-gabled residence, hidden by the slopes of the surrounding hillocks, and sheltered by the sturdy cob and slated walls of its sunny garden and orchard. His family portraits hung round the long low oak panelled drawing-room, which was full of beautiful old furniture and relics of the past. Book Christopher Classic Reprint

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christopher When Christopher was born nothing particular happened. A star may have danced, that is doubtful; that his mother cried is a fact beyond all dispute. Nothing was quite ready for him in a world into which he ushered himself somewhat unceremoniously. He was expected in London, where arrangements for his comfortable reception had been made by the excited ladies who were to become his aunts - rooms taken in convenient, perhaps inevitable, Ebury Street; a doctor warned, a crinolined nurse prepared at a moments notice to move in, and await or take up her interesting duties. But an unaccountable little boy, he must needs take everyone by surprise in mid-ocean. He had not even the excuse of a storm. The sea had never been calmer. He wanted to see the world? It was a beautiful world that night. There was a moon for lovers - a path of gold on the sea for lovers to have followed together in exquisite fancy to the golden city whither it led. Lovers - married lovers maybe - should have stood side by side to see it, where the lonely figure stood, pathetic in its weeds, and pathetic for something else which was vaguely apparent in the moonlight. It was the call of the beautiful world? Christopher all his life was to worship beauty. The wide eyes looking out over the shining sea filled with sudden tears the first outward expression of a rush of feeling which was temporarily to prove overwhelming. Pity then? Book The Relic Master

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christopher Buckley
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2015-12-08
  • ISBN : 1501125788
  • Pages : 400 pages

Download or read book The Relic Master written by Christopher Buckley and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christopher Buckley’s “hilarious, bawdy, and irreverent frolic of a tale” about a sixteenth-century relic hunter and the artist Albrecht Dürer who conspire to fabricate Christ’s burial shroud reads “like Indiana Jones gone medieval” (USA TODAY). The year is 1517. Dismas is a relic hunter who procures “authentic” religious relics for wealthy and influential clients. His two most important patrons are Frederick the Wise and soon-to-be Cardinal Albrecht of Mainz. While Frederick is drawn to the recent writing of Martin Luther, Albrecht pursues the financial and political benefits of religion and seeks to buy a cardinalship through the selling of indulgences. When Albrecht’s demands for grander relics increase, Dismas and his artist friend Dürer fabricate a shroud to sell to the unsuspecting noble. Unfortunately Dürer’s reckless pride exposes the trickery, so Albrecht puts Dismas and Dürer in the custody of four mercenaries and sends them all to steal Christ’s burial cloth (the Shroud of Chambéry), Europe’s most celebrated artifact. On their journey to Savoy where the Shroud will be displayed, they battle a lustful count and are joined by a beautiful female apothecary. It is only when they reach their destination they realize they are not alone in their intentions to acquire a relic of dubious legitimacy. “A rollicking good time, Christopher Buckley has transported his signature wit and irreverence from the Beltway to sixteenth-century Europe in The Relic Master” (GQ). This epic quest, “as rascally and convivial as any that Mr. Buckley has written” (The Wall Street Journal), is filled with fascinating details about art, religion, politics, and science; Vatican intrigue; and Buckley’s signature wit “holds the reader till the very last page” (The New York Times Book Review).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Following the Master: Short Studies in the Christian Life As no elementary work could be found which seemed to answer the purpose, a lesson was prepared each week and read to the class, some of whom wrote out in full even the scripture references. The lesson was thoroughly discussed and the references read in the class. The attempt was made to teach the Chris tian life as a consistent Whole, something worth living for, and, if need be, worth dying for. The interest taken by the class and the help appar ently given them have encouraged the writer to revise the studies and put them into a more permanent form. They are sent forth with the hope and prayer that they may be used in some way, however humble, for the progress of the kingdom. Book The Master Plan

Download or read book The Master Plan written by Chris Wilson and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiring, instructive, and ultimately triumphant memoir of a man who used hard work and a Master Plan to turn a life sentence into a second chance. Growing up in a tough Washington, D.C., neighborhood, Chris Wilson was so afraid for his life he wouldn't leave the house without a gun. One night, defending himself, he killed a man. At eighteen, he was sentenced to life in prison with no hope of parole. But what should have been the end of his story became the beginning. Deciding to make something of his life, Chris embarked on a journey of self-improvement--reading, working out, learning languages, even starting a business. He wrote his Master Plan: a list of all he expected to accomplish or acquire. He worked his plan every day for years, and in his mid-thirties he did the impossible: he convinced a judge to reduce his sentence and became a free man. Today Chris is a successful social entrepreneur who employs returning citizens; a mentor; and a public speaker. He is the embodiment of second chances, and this is his unforgettable story.

Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Written when he was 14 under the name "Alcyone" and published in 1910, it has been translated into 40 languages. There has been some debate over whether the author was Krishnamurti or his mentor C.W. Leadbeater. Krishnamurti never said that he wrote the work, and in the foreword he says: "These are not my own words but of the Master who taught me." He was referring to Leadbeater's claim that the Master Kuthumi was releasing the instruction to the young boy during the night while he was asleep. The book is considered a theosophical classic.
