Book Weak and Electromagnetic Interactions in Nuclei

Download or read book Weak and Electromagnetic Interactions in Nuclei written by Hans Volker Klapdor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear physics is presently experiencing a thrust towards fundamental phy sics questions. Low-energy experiments help in testing beyond today's stan dard models of particle physics. The search for finite neutrino masses and neutrino oscillations, for proton decay, rare and forbidden muon and pion de cays, for an electric dipole moment of the neutron denote some of the efforts to test today's theories of grand unification (GUTs, SUSYs, Superstrings, ... ) complementary to the search for new particles and symmetries in high-energy experiments. The close connections between the laws of microphysics, astrophysics and cosmology open further perspectives. This concerns, to mention some of them, properties of exotic nuclei and nuclear matter, and star evolution; the neutrino and the dark matter in the universe; relations between grand unification and evolution of the early universe. The International Symposium on Weak and Electromagnetic Interactions in Nuclei (W.E.LN. 1986)' held in Heidelberg 1-5 July 1986, in conjunction with the 600th anniversary of the University of Heidelberg, brought together experts in the fields of nuclear and particle physics, astrophysics and cosmol ogy.

Book Massive Lepton Pair Production in Hadronic Collisions Review Drell Yan Quark Annihilation Scaling Violations

Download or read book Massive Lepton Pair Production in Hadronic Collisions Review Drell Yan Quark Annihilation Scaling Violations written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review is presented of theoretical attempts to describe the massive lepton pair continuum produced in hadronic collisions. Beginning with the classical Drell-Yan quark-antiquark annihilation model, its expectations are compared with data. Scaling violations and corrections to the Drell-Yan pictured are discussed. Next, original work is presented bearing on the understanding of the transverse momentum distributions of the dileptons. In a parton model, the quark-gluon scattering graphs which provide scaling violations also endow the dileptons with relatively large (P/sub T/). Comparisons with available data support these QCD expectations; further tests of the QCD predictions are proposed. Implications are drawn for W production experiments, and predictions are presented for reactions initiated by antiprotons.

Book Review of the Theory and Phenomenology of Lepton Pair Production Review Drell Yan Mechanism Parton Distribution Gluon Radiation Quantum Chromodynamics Transverse Momentum

Download or read book Review of the Theory and Phenomenology of Lepton Pair Production Review Drell Yan Mechanism Parton Distribution Gluon Radiation Quantum Chromodynamics Transverse Momentum written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent experimental data and theoretical developments on the production of lepton pairs in hadron collisions are reviewed. With emphasis on the interplay between theory and experiment, the relevance of theoretical calculations to the data available at present energies is critically examined. The Drell--Yan mechanism is found to be phenomenologically dominant provided that the parton distribution functions contain effects of gluon radiation in a narrow cone. Explicit QCD perturbative calculations of the non-Drell--Yan type yield results that are apparently important at large transverse momenta, but are contradicated by subsequent data at 400 GeV and below. A consistent picture in the parton model is sketched. Further experiments to probe the basic mechanism are suggested. 83 references.

Download or read book Constructing Quarks written by Andrew Pickering and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1999-12 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely regarded as a classic in its field, Constructing Quarks recounts the history of the post-war conceptual development of elementary-particle physics. Inviting a reappraisal of the status of scientific knowledge, Andrew Pickering suggests that scientists are not mere passive observers and reporters of nature. Rather they are social beings as well as active constructors of natural phenomena who engage in both experimental and theoretical practice. "A prodigious piece of scholarship that I can heartily recommend."—Michael Riordan, New Scientist "An admirable history. . . . Detailed and so accurate."—Hugh N. Pendleton, Physics Today

Download or read book The Challenging Questions written by Antonino Zichichi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During July-August 1989. a group of 75 physicists from 52 laboratories in 16 countries met in Erice for the 27th Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics. The countries represented were: Austria. Bulgaria. Canada. China. Denmark. France. the Federal Republic of Germany. Hungary. India. Italy. Pakistan. Poland. Switzerland. United Kingdom. and the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics and the United States of America. The School was sponsored by the European Physical Society (EPS). the Italian Ministry of Education (MPI). the Italian Ministry of Scientific and Technological Research (MRST). the Sicilian Regional Government (ERS). and the Weizmann Institute of Science. In addition to some crucial problems in the Superworld Theory. developed by S. Ferrara and L. Hall. the School was focused on the most advanced topics which have attracted our attention during the last year. These are of a phenomenological nature: the problem of the spin inside the proton (G. Altarelli). some crucial QCD tests (R. Baldini-Celio and S. Brodsky). the jet phenomenology as predicted by QCD (Y. Dokshitzer); and of basic (therefore by far more difficult to solve) value. such as the understanding of the fundamental constants of Nature (G. Veneziano) and the new ideas on the cosmological constant (A. Stominger and G. Veneziano).
