Book The Big Book of Massey Tractors

Download or read book The Big Book of Massey Tractors written by Robert N. Pripps and published by Voyageur Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-scale history of one of the largest farm tractor manufacturers of all time, peppered with pictures of Massey-Harris, Ferguson, and Massey Ferguson’s historic models, collectibles, sales memorabilia, and advertisements from old farm magazines. The Big Book of Massey Tractors tells the story of the mergers and machines that formed Massey Ferguson over several decades, and—because these machines dominated Canadian farms for almost a century—in many ways it also tells the story of Canadian agriculture. Robert Pripps, a longtime tractor aficionado, describes Massey Ferguson’s battle with Ford over dominance of the farm tractor industry—a battle the company eventually won, remarkably enough, in view of its initial abject market failure with tractors. From the company’s beginnings in 1891, to its 1953 merger with the Ferguson tractor company, to its current ownership by Allis-Gleaner Company (AGCO), Masseys have played a large role in our agricultural history. The Big Book of Massey Tractors celebrates that role and showcases the machines that have helped turn the earth for over a hundred years.

Download or read book The American Reaper written by Gordon M. Winder and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Reaper adopts a network approach to account for the international diffusion of harvesting technology from North America, from the invention of the reaper through to the formation of a dominant transnational corporation, International Harvester. Much previous historical research into industrial networks focuses on industrial districts within metropolitan centres, but by focusing on harvesting - a typically rural technology - this book is able to analyse the spread of technological knowledge through a series of local networks and across national boundaries. In doing so it argues that the industry developed through a relatively stable stage from the 1850s into the 1890s, during which time many firms shared knowledge within and outside the US through patent licensing, to spread the diffusion of the American style of machines to establishments located around the industrial world. This positive cooperation was further enhanced through sales networks that appear to be early expressions of managerial firms. The book also reinterprets the rise of giant corporations, especially International Harvester Corporation (IHC), arguing that mass production was achieved in Chicago in the 1880s, where unprecedented urban growth made possible a break with the constraints felt elsewhere in the dispersed production system. It unleashed an unchecked competitive market economy with destructive tendencies throughout the transnational 'American reaper' networks; a previously stable and expanding production system. This is significant because the rise of corporate capital in this industry is usually explained as an outworking of national natural advantage, as an ingenious harnessing of science and technology to solve production problems, and as a rational solution to the problems associated with the worst forms of unregulated competition that emerged as independent firms developed from small-scale, artisanal production to large-scale manufacturers, on their own and within the separate and isolated US economy. The first study dedicated to the development and diffusion of American harvesting machine technology, this book will appeal to scholars from a diverse range of fields, including economic history, business history, the history of knowledge transfer, historical geography and economic geography.

Download or read book Your Food My Adventure written by Philip E. Bradshaw and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-13 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rick Marrs, Ph.D., has been a soul care provider for decades, first as a Christian counselor and licensed psychologist, then as a pastor and seminary professor. He has taught Christ-centered soul care to thousands of counselors and pastors. “Phil Bradshaw and I are both Illinois farmers who share a passion for the land and a desire to help feed a growing global population. I have had the pleasure of working with Phil on many issues during my career, especially while serving as the US Secretary of Agriculture for President Ronald Reagan’s administration. Phil has always been a champion for agriculture, traveling the globe to improve the lives of people. A lot of misinformation about food and farming exists today, this book gives a factual, firsthand perspective on food production and will give you a better understanding of today’s farmer.” John Block, former US Secretary of Agriculture Philip E. Bradshaw shares stories and recollections from a lifetime of farming in this memoir that celebrates a way of life. He highlights the advancement of farming and reflects on his efforts advocating for agriculture, serving as a leader, and policymaker, and traveling to more than 53 countries and meeting seven U.S. presidents along the way. Born on a family farm in Pike County, Illinois, he grew up during the turbulent 1940s and 1950s amid cows, chickens, and pigs—taking trips to Mexico and helping haul dozens of pigs at a time to the stockyards in East St. Louis in a truck. The author reflects on everything from the importance of international trade, starting his own career in farming, serving in the Army Reserves during the Cold War, managing his money, and meeting his future wife, Linda Bradburn, while speaking about farming at a meeting for young adults. He provides a meaningful historical perspective on how food production has progressed and explores where it is headed in the future—all while celebrating the importance of good living and helping others.

Book Farm Stories

Download or read book Farm Stories written by George Rock and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2024-10-21 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Rock grew up in the 1950’s on a central Alberta farm that was very typical in some ways, but unusual in others. Thanks to the Rock family’s inherited expertise, knack for innovation, and openness to ideas from colleagues and hired hands, the farm thrived through the 1940’s and 1950’s. They specialized as suppliers of breeding stock and registered seed to other farms, while extending the business into more unusual endeavours, including purebred sheep and thoroughbred racehorses. As George matured, he also witnessed the widespread impact of mechanization, which enabled the farm to expand in the 1960’s but also brought new challenges. Despite being from a small, geographically isolated community, George was exposed early on to the larger world through stories from his extended family and the farm’s ethnically diverse hired hands. Third in a family of four, his education included not only a one-room schoolhouse, but also trips to the US and neighbouring provinces. Even as he grew, learned, and got up to mischief with his younger sister; mourned the untimely death of his eldest brother when he was eleven and saw his family embroiled in a national political scandal when he was thirteen. Begun as reminiscences for his grandchildren, the stories in this book recall a rural world that is much changed, while also reflecting universal themes of innovation, humour, and family adaptation.
