This three-year interval is the period that the state uses for district and school accountability purposes. Improvements were seen as significant increases in average performance (scaled-scores), decreases in the number of students in the lowest performance level (failing) and increases in the highest Performance Levels (proficient and Advanced). Improvements were seen across all grades and subject areas (during this interval from 1998 to 2000. There were no declines in performance at any grade or for any subject between 1998 and 2000. Book The Origin of the Moving School in Massachusetts Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Origin of the Moving School in Massachusetts Classic Reprint written by Harlan Updegraff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin of the Moving School in Massachusetts The first four chapters - those which deal with the evolution of school control and of school support - may not seem to be logically connected with the subject proper. They are, in fact, an introduction to it, made necessary for the reasons that school control up to the present time has been considered as progressing during the seventeenth century from control of the many to con trol of the few, whereas the reverse is the truth; and also because no study has yet been made, and the results presented, of the subject of school support for this period. While there is a unity in the whole by reason of the fact that it was written from a single point of view - that of describing in a complete manner the origin of the moving school, yet the discussion of the reasons for its creation begins with Chapter V. The preceding chapters serve the purpose of paving the way for a satisfactory presenta tion of the subject proper as contained in the last six chapters. Book The Massachusetts System of Common Schools

Download or read book The Massachusetts System of Common Schools written by Massachusetts Board of Education and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-10 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Massachusetts System of Common Schools: Being an Enlarged and Revised Edition of the Tenth Annual Report of the First Secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Education To write a History of Popular Education in Massachusetts would be a work of great interest, and of little difficulty. Such a history, however, seems not to have been contemplated, and, therefore, would not be warranted, by those Resolves of the Legislature under which the following pages are prepared. The Resolves provide only for the republication of so much of his [the late Secretary's] Tenth Annual Report, as, with the requisite additions and alterations, Will exhibit a just and correct View of the Common School system of Massachusetts, and the provisions of law relating to it. An adequate idea of this system, however, can hardly be obtained without a brief reference to its origin, and to those great fundamental principles, which its authors and supporters seem rather to have tacitly assumed than to have fully expounded. Book Early New England Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book Early New England Schools Classic Reprint written by Walter Herbert Small and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early New England Schools The object of this book is not so much to furnish the author's opinions and conclusions, as to furnish the material from which the reader may form his own opinions and conclusions. With this in view, much is given directly from the old records, retaining the quaint phraseology and construction but modernizing the spelling for greater ease in reading. The order is that of the logical development of the schools through their various transition periods, with such excerpts from the laws as show the growth in legal power. The motive for the work lies in the following statement in Mr. George H. Martin's preface to his book, "The Evolution of the Massachusetts School System." He says, "This book is not a history..., for such a work the materials are ample and only await the approach of some one who has time and the inclination to use them." The curiosity aroused by that statement led to the first record, that to the second, until curiosity became a disease. However, this is not a history, but rather the materials out of which history may be made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Rise of the High School in Massachusetts

Download or read book The Rise of the High School in Massachusetts written by Alexander James Inglis and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of the High School in Massachusetts: Teachers College, Columbia University Contributions to Educations, No; 45 The development of the high school in the United States has before this been treated by numerous writers on education. For the most part, however, the subject has been treated by these writers in a general way in connection with other educational institutions, or in connection with certain prominent schools. While these individual institutions may be considered as the pioneers in the field, a study of them alone cannot give a comprehensive view of the work of the high school as a whole, nor can the real scope of public secondary education be estimated and understood from a consideration of a few individual institutions. Thus the study of such a school as the English Classical (High) School of Boston gives us very valuable data, but if we attempt to generalize on the development of the high school in Massachusetts from the schools of Boston alone we should get an altogether misleading conception of the work of the high school in that state. Likewise a study of such institutions as the Central High School of Philadelphia or that of Baltimore is undoubtedly of great value, but the history of those two institutions shows clearly that they cannot be considered as representative of the high school in general. No complete examination of any large group of high schools for the early period has ever been made. Even the number of high schools established in the various parts of the country during the early period has been a matter of dispute. Thus Dr. Harris, the late Commissioner of Education, who probably devoted as much attention to this subject as any other up to that time, stated in 1901: "The number of high schools in the United States in 1860 was about forty." On this topic Dr. Elmer E. Brown has this to say: "How many schools of this class were in existence previous to the Civil War, it would be hard to say.
