Book excerpt: The cumulus cloud events of the Florida peninsula that were observed during a 19-day period of photoreconnaissance in August and September 1957 are described and illustrated. The associated meteorological and rainfall events are also described and the intercorrelations among the various observations are pointed out. The study findings revealed that the principal factors governing the cloud and rainfall situations of the different days were (1) the low-level advection of water vapor into the peninsula from the oceanic surroundings, (2) the wind transport, into the heated peninsula from the oceans during the daytime, of pre -existing cumulus populations containing appreciable liquid water, (3) the low-level convergence, and associated updraft motion, engendered by the synoptic situation and the peninsula sea breezes, and (4) the precipitable water content of the lower Florida air mass. Book excerpt: The reader may be surprised to learn that the word "aeronomy" is not found in many of the standard dictionaries of the English language (for exam ple, Webster's International dictionary). Yet the term would appear to exist, as evidenced by the affiliations of the two authors of this volume (Institut d' Aeronomie Spatiale, Brussels, Belgium; Aeronomy Laboratory, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Boulder, CO, USA). Perhaps part of this obscurity arises because aeronomy is a relatively new and evolving field of endeavor, with a history dating back no farther than about 1940. The Chambers dictionary of science and technology provides the following defini tion: "aeronomy (Meteor. ). The branch of science dealing with the atmo sphere of the Earth and the other planets with reference to their chemi cal composition, physical properties, relative motion, and reactions to radiation from outer space" This seems to us an appropriate description, and it is reflected throughout the content of this volume. The study of the aeronomy of the middle atmosphere experienced rapid growth and development during the 1970's and 1980's, particularly due to con cern over the possibility of anthropogenic perturbations to the state of the middle atmosphere and its protective ozone layer. As a result, much has been learned regarding both the natural behavior of the atmosphere and the impact of man's activities upon it. In this book we shall attempt to describe the current state of the art as we see it.

Book excerpt: This report focuses on a body of work that suggests that the effective recombination coefficients in the daytime D-Region are fairly invariant and thus lead to a rather simple solution for the electron concentrations. In addition, a quadratic expression is available for the estimation of electron concentrations at night. The ionization production rate q must be known and incorporated into the chemistry of the D region to determine electron concentrations (e) as a function of altitude. There is some D region research which supports a simple way to determine (e) once q is known. Thus, the daytime effective recombination coefficient, Psi, appears to be relatively insensitive to q and can provide for the determination of (e), (e) = sq rt(q/Psi) under steady-state conditions. For steady-state conditions at night, an equation exists which yields (e) with reasonable accuracy. Keywords: D Region; Ionosphere; Mesosphere.
