Book Mass Spectrographic Assignment of Rubidium Isotopes

Download or read book Mass Spectrographic Assignment of Rubidium Isotopes written by Frederick L. Reynolds and published by . This book was released on 1949 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have used a mass spectrograph to investigate rubidium isotopes produced by bombardment of bromine (ammonium bromide) with helium ions in the Berkeley 60-inch and 184-inch cyclotrons. The 60 deg deflection spectrograph is similar to that of Lewis and Hayden but with larger dimensions and all-metal construction. In each bombardment with 20 to 100 Mev helium ions, there was a good yield of rubidium activity with half-life of about 6 hours. The rubidium activities were separated from the target material, using 20 to 30 micrograms of inactive rubidium carrier, and divided into two portions. One part was further purified and used for decay and absorption measurements. The other major portion was placed on the tungsten filament of the mass spectrograph as the nitrate or chloride. The Rb(+) ions produced by heating this filament were analyzed by the instrument and caught on a photographic plate. The mass scale was fixed by the lines of stable Rb(85) and Rb(87). Lines at masses 81 and 82 were shown to be radioactive both by the photographic transfer technique and by counting with a Geiger counter provided with a narrow slit. With 80-Mev helium ions, 5.0-hour Rb(81) predominated in the mixture, and with 20-Mev helium ions, almost-pure 6.3-hour Rb(82) was obtained. Otherwise, the similar half-lives would have made characterization of the radiations, which are listed in Table 1, very difficult. The signs of the particles were determined with a crude 180 deg -deflection beta spectrograph. The energies listed in Table 1 were obtained with this instrument or from absorption measurements with aluminum, beryllium, or lead, as indicated. p2.

Book The Discovery of Isotopes

Download or read book The Discovery of Isotopes written by Michael Thoennessen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-02 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the exciting discovery of every isotope observed on earth to date, which currently numbers some 3000. The discoveries are arranged in chapters according to the observation techniques or production methods. Each chapter contains tables listing the first authors of the first publication as well as details about the production and detection methods used. At the end, a comprehensive table lists all isotopes sorted by elements. The book is based on individual paragraphs for each isotope, which were published over the last few years as separate articles in the journal “Atomic Data and Nuclear Data Tables”. The work re-evaluates all prior assignments judging them with a uniform set of criteria. In addition, the author includes over 100 new isotopes which have been discovered since the articles published. This book is a source of information for researchers as well as enthusiastic laymen alike. From the prepublication review: “The explanations focus on the essentials, which makes the various chapters pleasingly compact. The phrasing is well understandable also for non-experts. This makes the book easy to read, even thrilling. I have to confess that parts of the manuscript I was even reading as an evening lecture in the bed, so exciting was the history of isotope discoveries.” Sigurd Hofmann, Helmholtz Professor at GSI Darmstadt, Germany, and a leading expert in superheavy nuclei

Book Advances in Mass Spectrometry

Download or read book Advances in Mass Spectrometry written by J. D. Waldron and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Mass Spectrometry documents the proceedings of a Joint Conference on Mass Spectrometry held at the University of London, Great Britain on September 24-26, 1958. This compilation reviews the instruments, techniques, applications, and major developments in mass spectrometry over the past years. The topics discussed include the performance and image error correction of the new stigmatic focusing mass spectrograph; correction of second order aberrations in inhomogeneous magnetic sector fields; and high sensitivity solid source mass spectrometry. The isotope dilution analysis; digitization of mass spectra; ionization potentials of alkyl and halogenated alkyl free radicals; and negative ion formation and electric breakdown in some halogenated gases are also elaborated. This book likewise covers the mass spectrometer as a geological instrument and absorption and desorption of gases in the ionized state on metal and glass surfaces. This publication is a useful reference to students and researchers conducting work on mass spectrometry.

Book excerpt: Wine traceability is a central theme in the current world market where consumers are increasingly demanding the quality and origin of food and drink. The wine production chain and wine composition are generally controlled by different laws (International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), European Union (EU), and national governments) and need specific documentation. Nevertheless, wine production is subject to fraud. Consequently, the improvement of the methods applied to verify the origin and quality of wines is very important to protect wine consumers and producers. In this book, eight different papers—six research papers and two reviews—address the topic from different points of view.
