Book Mass Media in Greece

Download or read book Mass Media in Greece written by Thimios Zaharopoulos and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1993 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this examination of Greek press, radio and television, authors Zaharopoulos and Paraschos describe media which have been tremendously politicized, partisan, and dominated by foreign programming. As the political and economic face of Greece and Europe changes, the Greek media has been thrown into anarchy. Greece today is at a critical stage of transition from a traditional, developing nation to a more western-oriented, modern society. The media have mirrored Greece's struggle, and as important tools of political, socioeconomic, and cultural power, they have been at the forefront of the national crisis. In this examination of Greek press, radio and television, Zaharopoulos and Paraschos describe media which have been tremendously politicized, partisan, and dominated by foreign programming. As the political and economic face of Greece and Europe changes, the Greek media have been thrown into anarchy. Zaharopoulos and Paraschos trace the development of the media under different political regimes which have shaped its norms and structures. Historically, governments ranging from military juntas to democratically elected ones, have all been reluctant to share the use of the print media, radio and television, although opposition parties have been successful in loosening the now crumbling government monopoly. The traditionally powerful elements of society have benefitted most from radio and television ownership which, the authors say, will ultimately benefit Greek society as a whole. The authors discuss the Greek mass media's transformation from state control to privatization as a foreshadowing model of Eastern European media developments. Mass Media in Greece will be of particular interest to students of international communication and modern Greece.

Book The Greek Crisis in the Media

Download or read book The Greek Crisis in the Media written by George Tzogopoulos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-26 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The portrayal of Greece by the international press during the financial crisis has been seen by many independent observers as very harsh. The Greeks have often been blamed for a myriad of international political problems and external economic factors beyond their control. In this original and insightful work George Tzogopoulos examines international newspaper coverage of the unfolding economic crisis in Greece. American, British, French, German and Italian broadsheet and tabloid coverage is carefully analysed. The Greek Crisis in the Media debates and dissects the extent to which the Greek response to the financial crisis has been given fair and balanced coverage by the press and questions how far politics and national stereotypes have played their part in the reporting of events. By placing the Greek experiences and treatment alongside those of other EU members such as Portugal, Ireland, Italy and Spain, Tzogopoulos examines and highlights similarities and differences in the ways in which different countries tackled the challenges they faced during this crucial period and explores how and why the world's media reported these events.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this analysis of media law in Greece surveys the massively altered and enlarged legal landscape traditionally encompassed in laws pertaining to freedom of expression and regulation of communications. Everywhere, a shift from mass media to mass self-communication has put enormous pressure on traditional law models. An introduction describing the main actors and salient aspects of media markets is followed by in-depth analyses of print media, radio and television broadcasting, the Internet, commercial communications, political advertising, concentration in media markets, and media regulation. Among the topics that arise for discussion are privacy, cultural policy, protection of minors, competition policy, access to digital gateways, protection of journalists’ sources, standardization and interoperability, and liability of intermediaries. Relevant case law is considered throughout, as are various ethical codes. A clear, comprehensive overview of media legislation, case law, and doctrine, presented from the practitioner’s point of view, this book is a valuable time-saving resource for all concerned with media and communication freedom. Lawyers representing parties with interests in Greece will welcome this very useful guide, and academics and researchers will appreciate its value in the study of comparative media law.

Book Discourses of Legitimation in the News

Download or read book Discourses of Legitimation in the News written by Vaia Doudaki and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-14 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the news coverage of the economic crisis in Greece, this book develops a framework for identifying discourses of legitimation of actors, political decisions, and policies in the news. This study departs from the assumption that news is a privileged terrain where discursive struggles (over power) are represented and take place. Incorporating systematic analysis of news texts and journalistic practices, the model contextualises the analysis in its specific socio-political environment and examines legitimising discourse through the prism of the news. Ultimately the book recognises the active role played by journalists and media in legitimating economic crisis related policies and decisions, and how they help dominant actors establish and legitimate their authority, which in turn helps journalists legitimate their own role and authority. A concise, focused book that applies a strong theoretical and methodological framework, Discourse of Legitimation in the News is a strong contribution to the field for researchers and postgraduate students.

Book Class Culture and the Media in Greece Volume 2

Download or read book Class Culture and the Media in Greece Volume 2 written by Yiannis Mylonas and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2024-10-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume work brings together studies focusing on the Greek realities of class as they appear in and through the Greek media realm. Critically engaging with traditions of class analysis, it brings to light various class perspectives and their explanatory power for the Greek context. In doing so, it embraces intersectional approaches that study class structures in their co-constructions/co-articulations with other forms of social organization and identification, such as race, ethnicity, gender, religion, geography and labor. Instead of providing clear-cut definitions, the chapters reveal the complexities and relationalities of class cultures and classed selves in their making. The second volume examines questions related to neoliberal cultures in the Greek context. It presents critical studies on mainstream cultural production and practices, and also includes studies on current counter-cultural forms and discourses.

Book Mediating the Nation

Download or read book Mediating the Nation written by Mirca Madianou and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to watch two-hour long news programmes every evening? Why are some people 'addicted' to the news while others prefer to switch off? Television is an indispensable part of the fabric of modern life and this book investigates a facet of this process: its impact on the ways that we experience the political entity of the nation and our national and transnational identities. Drawing on anthropological, social and media theory and grounded on a two-year original ethnography of television news viewing in Athens, the book offers a fresh, interdisciplinary perspective in understanding the media/identity relationship. Starting from a perspective that examines identities as lived and as performed, the book follows the circulation of discourses about the nation and belonging and contrasts the articulation of identities at a local level with the discourses about the nation in the national television channels. The book asks: whether, and in what ways does television influence identity discourses and practices? When do people contest the official discourses about the nation and when do they rely on them? Do the media play a role in relation to inclusion and exclusion from public life, particularly in the case of minorities? The book presents a compelling account of the contradictory and ambivalent nature of national and transnational identities while developing a nuanced approach to media power. It is argued that although the media do not shape identities in a causal way, they do contribute in creating common communicative spaces which often catalyse feelings of belonging or exclusion. The book claims a place in the emerging sub-field of media anthropology and represents the new generation of audience research that places media consumption in the wider social, economic and political context.
