Book Personal Influence

Download or read book Personal Influence written by Elihu Katz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1955, "Personal Influence" reports the results of a pioneering study conducted in Decatur, Illinois, validating Paul Lazarsfeld's serendipitous discovery that messages from the media may be further mediated by informal "opinion leaders" who intercept, interpret, and diffuse what they see and hear to the personal networks in which they are embedded. This classic volume set the stage for all subsequent studies of the interaction of mass media and interpersonal influence in the making of everyday decisions in public affairs, fashion, movie-going, and consumer behavior. The contextualizing essay in Part One dwells on the surprising relevance of primary groups to the flow of mass communication. Peter Simonson of the University of Pittsburgh has written that "Personal Influence was perhaps the most influential book in mass communication research of the postwar era, and it remains a signal text with historic significance and ongoing reverberations...more than any other single work, it solidified what came to be known as the dominant paradigm in the field, which later researchers were compelled either to cast off or build upon." In his introduction to this fiftieth-anniversary edition, Elihu Katz discusses the theory and methodology that underlie the Decatur study and evaluates the legacy of his coauthor and mentor, Paul F. Lazarsfeld.

Book Impersonal Influence

Download or read book Impersonal Influence written by Diana C. Mutz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-11-28 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People's perceptions of the attitudes and experiences of mass collectives are an increasingly important force in contemporary political life. In Impersonal Influence, Mutz goes beyond simply providing examples of how impersonal influence matters in the political process to provide a micro-level understanding of why information about distant and impersonal others often influence people's political attitudes and behaviors. Impersonal Influence is worthy of attention both from the standpoint of its impact on contemporary politics, and because of its potential to expand the boundaries of our understanding of social influence processes, and media's relation to them. The book's conclusions do not exonerate media from the effects of inaccurate portrayals of collective experience or opinion, but they suggest that the ways in which people are influenced by these perceptions are in themselves, not so much deleterious to democracy as absolutely necessary to promoting accountability in a large scale society.

Book Mass Communications and the Influence of Information During Times of Crises

Download or read book Mass Communications and the Influence of Information During Times of Crises written by Al-Suqri, Mohammed Nasser and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-12-17 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although global pandemics are not a new phenomenon, the COVID-19 pandemic has taken place in a very different information environment than any pandemic before it. In today’s world, information plays a critical role in all areas of life with much of this information being delivered over the internet and social media. People have access to unprecedented amounts of information from both official and unofficial sources. While these channels are beneficial for enabling authorities to obtain information necessary to manage the pandemic, there is also a higher risk of misinformation spread. Mass Communications and the Influence of Information During Times of Crises provides a comprehensive overview of research conducted into the role of information and the media during times of international crises, particularly examining the COVID-19 pandemic. This text provides a better understanding of how to use the media as a tool for managing pandemics in the event of future global health crises. Covering topics such as crisis communication, data acquisition, and social media usage, this book is a dynamic resource for government policymakers, public health authorities, information and communications specialists, researchers, graduate and post-graduate students, professors, and academicians in a wide range of both public health and information-related disciplines.

Book Power and Influence

  • Author : Richard Corry
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2019-07-25
  • ISBN : 0198840713
  • Pages : 253 pages

Download or read book Power and Influence written by Richard Corry and published by . This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is a complex place, and this complexity is an obstacle to our attempts to explain, predict, and control it. In Power and Influence, Richard Corry investigates the assumptions that are built into the reductive method of explanation - the method whereby we study the components of acomplex system in relative isolation and use the information so gained to explain or predict the behaviour of the complex whole. He investigates the metaphysical presuppositions built into the reductive method, seeking to ascertain what the world must be like in order that the method could work.Corry argues that the method assumes the existence of causal powers that manifest causal influence- - a relatively unrecognised ontological category, of which forces are a paradigm example. The success of the reductive method, therefore, is an argument for the existence of such causal influences. The book goes on to show that adding causal influence to our ontology gives us the resources to solve some traditional problems in the metaphysics of causal powers, laws of nature, causation, emergence, and possibly even normative ethics. What results, then, is not just an understanding of thereductive method, but an integrated metaphysical worldview that is grounded in an ontology of power and influence.

Book Influence of mass media in the shaping of public opinion and in the aggravation of the political polarization in the United States during the presidential campaign of 2016

Download or read book Influence of mass media in the shaping of public opinion and in the aggravation of the political polarization in the United States during the presidential campaign of 2016 written by Daniela Forero Nuñez and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2021-09-29 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presidential elections of 2016 have definitely marked the beginning of a new political era in the United States. But most importantly, they serve as an example of the increasing impact of mass media in political communication and in the performance of basic democratic mechanisms, such as electoral campaigning. Both Hillary Clinton’s and Donald Trump’s electoral strategies reflect the rising influence of social media and other forms of traditional media in the shaping of public opinion. This paper attempts to analyze what role did the mass media play in the formation of public opinion and in the accentuation of the political polarization in the United States during the presidential campaign of 2016.

Book The Practice of Social influence in Multiple Cultures

Download or read book The Practice of Social influence in Multiple Cultures written by Wilhelmina Wosinska and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2000-11-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a diverse collection of studies reporting the effects of social influence processes in multiple cultures at both the universal and culture-specific levels. The book is characterized by three distinct features. First, the social influence process is considered as a ubiquitous and pervasive feature of human interaction. Second, the book represents a multicultural approach which includes both cross-cultural and culture-focused examinations. Third, the book emphasizes practical implications of the research presented. This volume incorporates theory and research stemming from three different approaches to social influence: social influence principles across cultures, social influence and social change across cultures, and culture and moral perspective in the social influence process. Because each of these three parts encompasses a considerable variety of research methodologies, social contexts, and cultures, each is proceeded by an integrative commentary authored by one of the book editors. These essays provide syntheses of the topics and themes within the corresponding sections and within the book as a whole. They also offer critical commentaries on both theoretical and methodological issues, raise suggestions for future research, and focus on practical applications. This book is intended for both scholars interested in cross- and multicultural research into the mechanisms of the social influence process and for the professional whose mission is to make planned changes in a society. Knowledge about the influence process, especially regarding how it works in different cultures and within several cultural groups, facilitates this goal. The practical implications ending each chapter serve as encouraging instructions for such applications.

Book Fluid Oscillations in the Containers of a Space Vehicle and Their Influence Upon Stability

Download or read book Fluid Oscillations in the Containers of a Space Vehicle and Their Influence Upon Stability written by Helmut F. Bauer and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the increasing size of space vehicles and their larger diameters which lower the natural frequencies of the propellants, the effects of propellant sloshing especially since at launch a very large amount of the total weight is in the form of liquid propellant. With increasing diameters the eigenfrequencies of the propellant become smaller and shift closer to the control frequency of the space vehicle. Furthermore, the oscillating propellant masses and the corresponding forces increase considerably. A relatively simple means of avoiding strong dynamic coupling can be achieved by subdivision of the container by radial or circular walls. This results in smaller sloshing masses and higher eigenfrequencies. Another possibility is the clustering of tanks with small diameters which has the disadvantage of a weight penalty. For stability investigations the influence of the oscillating propellant has to be known. For this reason forces and moments of the propellant with a free fluid surface in a container of circular ring sector cross section performing forced oscillations must be determined. This will be performed with the assumption of irrotational, frictionless, and incompressible liquid. Linear equivalent damping is introduced with the help of a mechanical model describing the fluid motion. It has to be determined by experiments.

Book Vehicle of Influence

Download or read book Vehicle of Influence written by Roland Francis Stephen and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2009-12-21 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines a crucial period in European integration, ending in the early 1990s, when significant progress was made towards the dream of a unified European market. It shows how European automakers were part of these changes and how their influence within the institutions of the European Union (EU) yielded a wide range of policy compromises governing a single European car market. The book begins by reviewing the history of the EU and the logic of regional free trade, and goes on to develop a political explanation for the kinds of changes that actually occurred. The author argues that European automakers enjoyed a privileged place in the political arena, albeit one much transformed by the new institutions of the EU. Therefore, these firms often significantly influenced regional policy outcomes. The argument is applied to policymaking in the important areas of environmental regulation, trade, subsidies, and anti-trust regulation. This work lies at the intersection of business, economics, and political science and is of interest to both experts and non-specialists with an interest in the tremendous economic and political changes brought about by the creation of a united Europe and, more generally, by the worldwide process of regional economic integration. Academics, professionals, businessmen, and leaders in government all have something to learn from the way in which firms and governments combined to build the largest car market in the world. Roland Stephen is Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science, North Carolina State University.
