Book Mass Analyzed Threshold Ionization photoion with VUV Laser Pulsed Field Ionization and Guided Ion Beam Method Applied to the Study of State selected Ion molecule Reaction Dynamics

Download or read book Mass Analyzed Threshold Ionization photoion with VUV Laser Pulsed Field Ionization and Guided Ion Beam Method Applied to the Study of State selected Ion molecule Reaction Dynamics written by Hong Xu and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation covers four major chapters. In Chapter 1, a general introduction is given on the research methods of state-selected ion-molecule reaction dynamics including VUV generation, pulse field ionization, guided ion beam method, as well as mass analyzed threshold ionization (MATI). Chapter 2 presents the development of instruments construction for the study of state-selected ion-molecule reaction dynamics. Chapter 3 represents a VUV pulsed field ionization-photoelectron spectroscopic study of pyrazine (C6H4N2). The ionization energy was determined to be 74,906.6 ± 2.0 cm−1 (9.28728 ± 0.00025 eV). The PFI-PE spectrum of pyrazine exhibits well-resolved vibrational bands, which have been well characterized. In Chapter 4 the first rotationally resolved mass-analyzed-threshold (MATI) photoion spectra of N2(X2 [sigma][subscript g], v=0, 1) bands of nitrogen is reported with high resolution using the pulsed field ionization method. The rovibrational spectrum of N2+(X2 [sigma]+[subscript g], v+=0, 1) is analyzed. Absolute rovibrationally selected total cross sections for the charge transfer reaction N2+(X2 [sigma]+[subscript g], v+=0, 1) + Ar are measured.

Book Femtosecond Infrared Lasers Applied to Fundamental and Bio imaging Studies in Time of flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry

Download or read book Femtosecond Infrared Lasers Applied to Fundamental and Bio imaging Studies in Time of flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry written by Andrew Kucher and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strong field ionization by ultrashort IR pulses was applied to secondary neutral mass spectrometry. The intact post-ionization of a range of molecular structures was observed and protocols for maximizing molecular detection sensitivities were set forth. The technique was successfully applied to some of the largest organic molecules ever detected by any laser post-ionization method, with masses above 500 Da. It was able to produce molecular ion signal intensities that sometimes exceeded those of secondary ions by an order of magnitude. In addition, for the first time ever, strong field ionization secondary neutral mass spectrometry was applied to biological analyses in mouse brain tissues and algal cell colonies where, in some cases, it revealed analytes concealed by matrix ionization effects in the secondary ion mass spectra. Strong field ionization is shown to be a powerful supplement to the TOF-SIMS experiment, and proposed future developments may increase its utility even further.

Book Laser Photodissociation and Spectroscopy of Mass separated Biomolecular Ions

Download or read book Laser Photodissociation and Spectroscopy of Mass separated Biomolecular Ions written by Nicolas C. Polfer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lecture notes book presents how enhanced structural information of biomolecular ions can be obtained from interaction with photons of specific frequency - laser light. The methods described in the book "Laser photodissociation and spectroscopy of mass-separated biomolecular ions" make use of the fact that the discrete energy and fast time scale of photoexcitation can provide more control in ion activation. This activation is the crucial process producing structure-informative product ions that cannot be generated with more conventional heating methods, such as collisional activation. The book describes how the powerful separation capabilities and sensitivity of mass spectrometry (MS) can be combined with the structural insights from spectroscopy by measuring vibrational and electronic spectra of trapped analytes. The implementation of laser-based photodissociation techniques in MS requires basic knowledge of tunable light sources and ion trapping devices. This book introduces the reader to key concepts and approaches in molecular spectroscopy, and the light sources and ion traps employed in such experiments. The power of the methods is demonstrated by spectroscopic interrogation of a range of important biomolecular systems, including peptides, proteins, and saccharides, with laser light in the ultraviolet-visible, and infrared range. The book "Laser photodissociation and spectroscopy of mass-separated biomolecular ions" is an indispensable resource for students and researchers engaged or interested in this emerging field. It provides the solid background of key concepts and technologies for the measurements, discusses state-of-the-art experiments, and provides an outlook on future developments and applications.

Book Molecular Beams in Physics and Chemistry

Download or read book Molecular Beams in Physics and Chemistry written by Bretislav Friedrich and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-06-19 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Open Access book gives a comprehensive account of both the history and current achievements of molecular beam research. In 1919, Otto Stern launched the revolutionary molecular beam technique. This technique made it possible to send atoms and molecules with well-defined momentum through vacuum and to measure with high accuracy the deflections they underwent when acted upon by transversal forces. These measurements revealed unforeseen quantum properties of nuclei, atoms, and molecules that became the basis for our current understanding of quantum matter. This volume shows that many key areas of modern physics and chemistry owe their beginnings to the seminal molecular beam work of Otto Stern and his school. Written by internationally recognized experts, the contributions in this volume will help experienced researchers and incoming graduate students alike to keep abreast of current developments in molecular beam research as well as to appreciate the history and evolution of this powerful method and the knowledge it reveals.
