Yet despite their clashes of will, they were one in their devotion to Jared’s little girl, whose soul was wounded by her mother’s shocking death. For the mahogany-maned beauty was not the only one with a secret within Hawkstone’s magnificent walls. Jared, too, kept his brooding counsel. Driven by the passion that burned between them, he seized on an unforeseen discovery and forced Alissa to become his wife. Still they denied the tenderness that charged their desire until they were enmeshed in a deadly intrigue that threatened all they treasured!

Book excerpt: Scotland’s flame-haired beauty… The hawk swooping after a female sparrow near her castle sent a chill of foreboding through lovely Chandra Morgan, Lady Lochlaigh. Legend said the ladybird would feel the hawk’s talons in her heart as he carried her away. Chandra, young chieftain of the Morgans, felt her fears growing for her cherished heather-covered land with its warring clans, and the omen of the hawk began to haunt her soul… England’s magnificent warrior lord… Cold and wet to the bone, Alexander Hawke, Lord Montbourne, cursed his misfortune at being sent to the godforsaken Northern Highlands. The king himself had appointed Aleck guardian of Lady Lochlaigh and ordered him to find her a husband loyal to the Crown. Now, as Castle Lochlaigh stood gray and hostile before him, his infamous temper ignited at the clansmen barring his entrance, but far hotter feelings quickly flared when he beheld Chandra Morgan’s flashing eyes. Chandra knew that here was the hawk of legend come to snare her, yet all her cunning couldn’t stop the desire running like fire in her blood…or the kisses that would brand her a traitor if she surrendered to his love.

Book excerpt: Early narratives have tended to be critiqued as novels, an approach that misses their distinctive Renaissance realism. Alastair Fowler surveys picturing and perspective from the fifteenth century to the eighteenth, drawing analogies between literature and visual art. The book is based on the history of the narrative imagination after single-point perspective. The habit of an older, multi-point perspective long continued, accounting for "anachronism," discontinuous realism, "double time-schemes," and depiction of different moments as simultaneous.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Masque of the Red Death", originally published as "The Mask of the Red Death: A Fantasy", is an 1842 short story by American writer Edgar Allan Poe. The story follows Prince Prospero's attempts to avoid a dangerous plague, known as the Red Death, by hiding in his abbey. He, along with many other wealthy nobles, hosts a masquerade ballwithin seven rooms of the abbey, each decorated with a different color. In the midst of their revelry, a mysterious figure disguised as a Red Death victim enters and makes his way through each of the rooms. Prospero dies after confronting this stranger, whose "costume" proves to contain nothing tangible inside it; the guests also die in turn. Poe's story follows many traditions of Gothic fiction and is often analyzed as an allegory about the inevitability of death, though some critics advise against an allegorical reading. Many different interpretations have been presented, as well as attempts to identify the true nature of the titular disease. The story was first published in May 1842 in Graham's Magazineand has since been adapted in many different forms, including a 1964 film starring Vincent Price.

Once, Céleste Artois had dreams of being an artist. But when the creative elite of Paris dashed those plans, she turned her talents to forgery and cons. She and the Enchantresses—her two fellow thieves and best friends—see Paris as a rich hunting ground for marks. Yet even though their hideout in Père Lachaise cemetery is bursting with francs, Céleste cannot rest. There is always more to take. And the blood she has begun to cough into her handkerchief means her time is running out. But everything changes when she encounters Rafe, a mysterious and beautiful stranger who leads her to an enchanted salon—a place where artists can bring wondrous imaginations to life. Céleste is captivated by this establishment, and learns of the existence of magical Paris, hidden in the pockets and alleys of the ordinary world, if one only knows where to look. Rafe offers Céleste an irresistible deal: the gift of time in exchange for lending him and his benefactor her forging talents. But one must be careful making deals with devils, and there's more to this hidden world than meets the eye. Shadows have begun to circle Paris.
