Book Masonry Structures Classic Reprint

Download or read book Masonry Structures Classic Reprint written by Frederick Putman Spalding and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masonry Structures The term Masonry has been construed to include concrete, and the field covered by the title is a very wide one. It has therefore been necessary to select for discussion those types which seem most adequately to illustrate the principles, and no attempt has been made to cover fully the details of all classes of masonry structures. The purpose has been to provide an introduction to the subject, which may later be followed by intensive study in more detailed works upon the various branches. This gives a general view of the subject as a whole, and is the natural method of approach. The Author has derived much assistance from a number of books which deal more fully with various portions of the subject. These are mentioned at the ends of articles or chapters to which they specially relate. They should be studied by students desiring a more complete presentation of the subject. Special acknowledgment is also due to Professors A. Lincoln Hyde and Guy D. Newton of the University of Missouri for reading and criticising portions of the manuscript and for assistance in pre paring the illustrations. Book The Design of Masonry Structures and Foundations Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Design of Masonry Structures and Foundations Classic Reprint written by Clement C. Williams and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Design of Masonry Structures and Foundations Due to investigations, both analytical and experimental, that have been made in recent years of the properties of masonry materials, the forces to which masonry structures are subjected, and the behavior of such structures, masonry design and construction have largely passed from the status of an art to that of a science, much as did bridge design after the invention of methods for calculating stresses in truss members. The extensive use of concrete with the studies that have been made to improve its quality and to secure economy in its use, and the development of reinforced concrete, a masonry material capable of sustaining tensile strains and requiring a stress analysis in order to proportion the steel, have contributed largely to this changed status in the design of masonry structures. This scientific understanding of masonry design has widened the use of masonry to include many structures for which other materials formerly were used exclusively, although for the most part, notwithstanding their diversity, these structures can be grouped about a comparatively few representative types. The soft and pleasing hues and outlines of masonry structures as well as their durability have appealed to builders from time immemorial, and masonry still offers the best means of building artistically and strongly with the economy that results from permanence. Moreover, there is an increasing demand in the design of engineering structures to secure not only stability and economy but something of elegance, grace and beauty in addition. Since good architectural treatment can be secured with but slight if any increase in the cost, it is appropriate that this phase of design should be given special attention in planning masonry structures. The present volume was prepared with a view to furnishing a textbook embodying these ideas. An attempt has been made to offer a mode of analyzing forces and calculating resulting stresses and to indicate an acceptable method of design. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stresses in Masonry This little work supplies, I believe, a felt want. Elementary treatises on steel-work are numerous, but a brief yet comprehensive account of the stresses in masonry has not yet, to my knowledge, been produced. I have assumed that the reader is familiar with mathematics only up to quadratics, all more advanced matter being relegated to foot-notes. Also I have assumed that a knowledge of stresses in steel, such as is possessed by the majority of young engineers and architects in practice, is at the reader's disposal. Beyond this, I have endeavoured to make the matter as simple as possible, eliminating complex theory which may be a little more accurate, but does not adapt itself to design. Book Indian Masonry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Indian Masonry Classic Reprint written by Robert C. Wright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Masonry This work is fraternally dedicated to you. In your kindly charge it is placed, hoping that when it has been measured by the plumb, square and level, it will be found good work, true work, square work, and just such work as you need and may pass to be used in the building up of the real Masonic structure. The field of study among the aboriginal races of the new world is intensely interesting, and so much so that the author would fain do more and more in that field, could he have the time at his disposal, for he firmly believes that the Craft of this country owes it to itself to have this work done. He also believes that facts may yet be found out there, which will make our Masonry look like a Broadway store building beside an old Egyptian temple. Astonishing and curious things of the past not only fascinate and inter est, but lure one on to seek to dispel the shadows cast about them and to view them in the light by which those people worked. Book Masonry

Download or read book Masonry written by George R. Barham and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masonry: An Elementary Text-Book for Students in Trade Schools and Apprentices This book, has been written with the object of giving the greatest amount of information to the practical student, whilst keeping in view the requirements of the City and Guilds Examining Authorities. Examples of Stereotomy have been added, with the hope that they will prove of service to all engaged in the craft, either as draughtsmen or craftsmen. The Author hopes at a later date to extend the scope of the work to include marble masonry and interior decoration, together with more advanced examples in stereotomy and the Statics of Construction. It is assumed that the reader has some knowledge of practical geometry and mathematics; but the examples are described and illustrated as clearly as possible, to enable the reader who has not this knowledge to follow the method of working. The Author, who is a practical mason, has had many years experience in Building work, and has taught the subject of Masonry at several of our London Polytechnics. He wishes to express his thanks to Mr. H. W. Richards, Principal L.C.C. School of Building, Brixton, his earliest teacher, who imbued him with that quest after information, without which this book would not have been attempted. To Mr. E. Burlington for his kindly criticisms and valuable suggestions, and also for his overlooking the final proofs and arrangement of the index. The City and Guilds of London Institute for their permission to reprint the examination papers, and the publishers for their suggestions and assistance. Book Construction of Masonry Dams Classic Reprint

Download or read book Construction of Masonry Dams Classic Reprint written by Chester W. Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Construction of Masonry Dams Many volumes have been written upon the design of masonry dams; the principal features and methods have been reduced to what may be called an accepted, standard practice. It is hoped that the present work will supply the details of construction and supervision which have not been adequately covered heretofore. For a number of years descriptions of particular dams have appeared in the engi neering periodicals, but little attention has been given in these articles to the general principles of construction involved. Within the limitations of this book it was not possible to cover the subject in all of its ramifications. Earth work, rock excavation, cement, pumping and many similar subjects have been passed over entirely either because adequate treatment was impossible in such a work as this, or because they are fully covered in other books. Other subjects, such as power, are touched upon in the most ele mentary manner and solely from the point of view of the man en gaged in dam construction. Thus the material upon source and dis tribution of power are mere suggestions, while the subjects of power required, cost of power, etc., are treated somewhat more fully. It is probably true that for one dam actually built, several are projected and more or less thoroughly examined. The inception and promotion of such projects and their examination by financiers, result in a number of engineers being called upon for estimates of cost. Such estimates must often be prepared within a limited time and for a limited expenditure. To facilitate the rapid and reasonably accu rate treatment of such estimates, a chapter has been added on this subject, and this, in fact, was one of the chief purposes of the book. It is hoped that the cost figures will prove a reliable and useful guide for estimates. Labor costs, as always, must be used with caution. Book Practical Masonry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Masonry Classic Reprint written by Edward Shaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Masonry Most works on this subject set out witu a description of all the minutiae of the art of building; and though they may, perhaps, exhibit something that will be useful to the apprentice, yet they contain much that is of no importance to the practical mechanic; while the price is so much enhanced, that few can well afford to possess them. As permanency in building seems, at the present day, to be an object more desirable than formerly, it has been thought that a brief account of the nature and qualities of building materials, with a short exposition of their component parts, would not be misplaced in a treatise of this kind. The Compiler flatters himself, that he has, on this head, furnished some informa tion, that will be serviceable not only to the operator but to the proprietor; neither of whom can, with safety, remain unacquainted with the quality of the materials employed.
