Book Arch Bridges

Download or read book Arch Bridges written by A. Sinopoli and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern structural engineering surprises us with the mastery and certainty with which it plans and carries out daring projects, such as the most recent metal or concrete bridges, whether they be suspension or arch bridges. On the other hand, little is yet known about the state of knowledge of construction science and techniques which, well before the arrival of modern methods based on the mechanics of deformable continua, made it possible in the past to erect the vaulted masonry structures rthat we have inherited. The fact that these have lasted through many centuries to our time, and are still in a fairly good state of conservation, makes them competitive, as far as stability and durability are concerned, with those constructed in other materials. Although it is known that the equilibrium of the arch is guaranteed by any funicular whatsoever of the loads, contained inside the profile of an arch, finding the unique solution is not such a certainty. In other words, the problem of the equilibrium of vaulted structures is 'Poleni's problem', the one for which the Venetian scientist was able to give an exemplary solution on the occasion of the assessment of the dome of St. Peter's. Arch Bridges focuses on the main aspects of the debate about the masonry arch bridge: History of structural mechanics and construction, theoretical models, analysis for assessment, numerical methods, experimental and non-destructive testing, maintenance and repair are the topics of the Conference. The breadth and variety of the contributions presented and discussed by leading experts from many countries make this volume an authoritative source of up-to-date information.

Book Masonry Arch Bridges

Download or read book Masonry Arch Bridges written by John Page and published by Bernan Press(PA). This book was released on 1993 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masonry arch bridges are an important part of the British road and rail network. There are for instance, about 40,000 road bridges, about 40% of Britain's total bridge stock. The amount of traffic they are now called on to carry has increased enormously since they were built, as has the weight of some of that traffic. Although these bridges have been in existence for thousands of years, research on their structural behaviour is still being carried out and new analytical techniques are being developed.

Book Safety of historical stone arch bridges

Download or read book Safety of historical stone arch bridges written by Dirk Proske and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-18 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical stone arch bridges are still a major part of the infrastructure in many countries. Although this type of bridge has proven to be an efficient construction type, it often poses the problem of insufficient numerical models of the load bearing behavior. Therefore the book introduces methods to adapt life loads and introduces different types of numerical models of the load resistance respectively. The book continues with the introduction of specific damages and strengthening techniques. The book particularly focuses on the probabilistic safety assessment of historical arch bridges, for which often only limited material and structural data is available.

Book Masonry Bridges Viaducts and Aqueducts

Download or read book Masonry Bridges Viaducts and Aqueducts written by Ted Ruddock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 2,000 years the most durable spanning structures have been built of masonry, and the surviving bridges of the Roman Empire have challenged master masons, architects and engineers to emulate and surpass them. Down the centuries, bridge-builders have been commissioned by monarchs, bishops, councils of state, cities, private individuals and, more recently, waterway and railway companies. The studies collected in this volume focus chiefly on the bridges, viaducts and aqueducts themselves and the actions of the designers and builders, but also encompass the political, economic and social contexts and outcomes of their creation. Famous bridges in Britain, Italy, France, Iran and the USA are all featured. Narratives of conception, design and construction predominate, but there are also papers on construction techniques, on the analysis of documentary sources, and on the continuing search by modern engineers for satisfactory scientific description of the strength and stability of arch bridges.
