HISTORY OF FREEMASONRY IN YORK. HERE is no city in England more interesting to the Freemasons than York, and not one about which more fabulous statements have been made in connection with Freemasonry. It is partly because of the latter fact that we have been led to write this sketch, and as no such article has been previously presented to the Fraternity, we may be excused for attempting to tread on fresh grounds, seeing that reliable information on so important a subject is much wanted at this time. With the architectural features of the grand old city and its ornaments, we do not purpose having anything to do, excepting to state that, to the Mark Master Mason, the noble Minster and the ruins of the Abbey are especially precious, containing, as they do, a number of Masons' Marks, some of which have been collected by Mr. George Godwin, and published in the Sessional Papers of the "Royal Institute of British Architects," and in the "Builder," and many more may still be seen on the walls, Sessional Papers, 1868-9, London. No. 9. particularly in the early English basement, now in the crypt of the nth and 12th centuries. The origin of Masonry in York, and its ancient history, are much involved in fable, for in general, those who have written on the subject have been more anxious to magnify mere traditions, than to discover the few facts that still remain which illustrate its character for some centuries. Before 1700 we have no records but simply MS. Constitutions, although Bro. How in " Freemasons' Manual," would have us believe that the " York Rite has existed from time immemorial, and originated in the city of York, where the first Grand Lodge of England was held, A.D. 926 "--i.e. the York Rite, including the...

Remarks on the preceding Manuscript, and on the Annotations of Mr. Locke. This dialogue possesses a double claim to our regard: first, for its antiquity; and next, for the notes added to it by Mr. Locke, who, though not at that time enrolled in the order of Masons, offers very just conjectures on their history and traditions. Every reader must feel a secret satisfaction in the Eerusal of this aneient manuscript, especially the true ason, whom it more nearly concerns. The recommendation of a philosopher of as great merit and penetration as this nation ever produced, added to the real value of the piece itself, mus, t give it a sanction and render it deserving a serious examination. The conjecture of the learned annotator concerning its being an examination taken before King Henry of one of the traternity of Masons, is accurate. The severe edict passed at that time against the Society, and the discouragement given to the Masons by the Bishop of Winchester and his party, induced that prince, in his riper years, to makea strict scrutiny into the nature of the Masonic Institution; which was attended with the happy circumstance of gaining his favour, and his patronage. Had not the civil commotions in the kingdom during his reign attracted the notice of government, this act would probably have been repealed, through the intercession of the Duke of Gloucester, whose attachment to the Fraternity was conspicuous. Page 80. What mote ytt be? Mr. Locke observes, in his annotation on this question, that the answer imports, Masonry consists of natural, mathematical, and mechanical knowledge; some part of which, he says, the Masons pretend to have taught mankind, and some part they still conceal.--The arts which they have communicated to the..

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masonic Records: Chiefly of the Etruscan Lodge In the Potteries the oldest Lodge is St. Martin's, No. 98, dating from 1805, and all honor is due and given to the old Burslem Masons for bringing it to the ourishing state it is now in; but, considering the smallness and comparative unimportance of Lane End (now Longton), the population at that time being about when the first Lodge was founded in 1805, Longton has every reason to be proud of her old Masons. There were then two Grand Lodges in England. The Grand Lodge of England, constituted in 1717, the members of which were known after I 751 as Modern Masons, and The Grand Lodge of England, according to the old institutions, constituted 1751, the members being designated Ancient or Atholl Masons. These two Grand Lodges were combined in 1813, and formed the United Grand Lodge of England The Lane End brethren obtained a Warrant from the Ancients, dated the 24th April, 1805, and called the Lodge The United Pottery Lodge, No. 134 (see Lane's Records), the number being altered in 1814 to 160. It was held on the Tuesday nearest the full moon, and was a lodge of four degrees, that is, it included the Holy Royal Arch. There are no minutes extant, but a few signatures remain. It was held originally at the White Lion Inn, subse quently at The Swan, the Crown and Anchor and the Union Hotel, and then back to the White Lion. In 1822 the name was altered to the United Potters' Lodge, and it was ultimately erased in 1829. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. (The Masonic controversy was the only point upon which the two divisions of the party were separated, but that separation I feared was irreconcileable. The party in opposition to the State Government, and friendly to the present federal administration, was necessarily Masonic, by adherence to their chief; himself DEGREES illustrious with Masonic acquirements and dignities/ The National Republicans were Masonic, by the declared adherence of their Chief to the same institution of which he was a distinguished member, and indications were not wanting that all the differences of principle between those two parties, ardent and bitter as they were, would be swallowed up, in the transcendent common interest of Freemasonry. So it had emphatically proved in the State of Vermont, and such was, in my apprehension, likely to be the issue in Massachusetts. It was with extreme reluctance that I consented to be placed within the wind of this commotion, for I saw that it would bring me in collision with the party then still wielding the power of the State, and with whose general principles and policy my own were in full accord. '. I had recently been re-elected, by the co-operation of that party, in the Congressional district where I reside, to a seat in the House of Representatives of the United States. I had previously been nominated by a Convention of the members of that party, as well as by an Antimasonic, and also a Republican Convention, to represent the District of Plymouth in the last Congress. At the expiration of that term of service, I was again nominated by an Antimasonic, and also by a National Republican Convention, to represent
