Download or read book Historic Sketches of Walla Walla Whitman Columbia and Garfield Counties Washington Territory and Umatilla County Oregon Classic Reprint written by Frank T. Gilbert and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Sketches of Walla Walla, Whitman, Columbia and Garfield Counties, Washington Territory, and Umatilla County, Oregon Vasco Nunez de Balboa, the first white man to step upon the plain of Pacific Coast history, is introduced to the reader without prelude, or essay, upon the causes that led to his doing it. He was from the humble walks of life, heartless, fanatical, vain, cruel and ambitious. He was a Spaniard by birth, and a ghoul by nature, who, to escape his creditors, in Hispaniola, crept into the hold of a vessel bound for the Caribbean Sea. The commander, Enciso, threatened to have him thrown overboard, when found, but unfortunately, for humanity's sake, failed to do it. Book Assessing Site Significance

Download or read book Assessing Site Significance written by Donald L. Hardesty and published by Rowman Altamira. This book was released on 2009-03-16 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assessing Site Significance is an invaluable resource for archaeologists and others who need guidance in determining whether sites are eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Because the register's eligibility criteria were largely developed for standing sites, it is difficult to know in any particular case whether a site known primarily through archaeological work has sufficient 'historical significance' to be listed. Hardesty and Little address these challenges, describing how to file for NRHP eligibility and how to determine the historical significance of archaeological properties. This second edition brings everything up to date, and includes new material on 17th- and 18th-century sites, traditional cultural properties, shipwrecks, Japanese internment camps, and military properties.

Book Towns and Villages of the Lower Ohio

Download or read book Towns and Villages of the Lower Ohio written by Darrel E. Bigham and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2015 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No other region in America is so fraught with projected meaning as Appalachia. Many people who have never set foot in Appalachia have very definite ideas about what the region is like. Whether these assumptions originate with movies like Deliverance (1972) and Coal Miner's Daughter (1980), from Robert F. Kennedy's widely publicized Appalachian Tour, or from tales of hiking the Appalachian Trail, chances are these suppositions serve a purpose to the person who holds them. A person's concept of Appalachia may function to reassure them that there remains an "authentic" America untouched by consumerism, to feel a sense of superiority about their lives and regions, or to confirm the notion that cultural differences must be both appreciated and managed. In Selling Appalachia: Popular Fictions, Imagined Geographies, and Imperial Projects, 1878-2003, Emily Satterwhite explores the complex relationships readers have with texts that portray Appalachia and how these varying receptions have created diverse visions of Appalachia in the national imagination. She argues that words themselves not inherently responsible for creating or destroying Appalachian stereotypes, but rather that readers and their interpretations assign those functions to them. Her study traces the changing visions of Appalachia across the decades from the Gilded Age (1865-1895) to the present and includes texts such as John Fox Jr.'s Trail of the Lonesome Pine (1908), Harriet Arnow's Hunter's Horn (1949), and Silas House's Clay's Quilt (2001), charting both the portrayals of Appalachia in fiction and readers' responses to them. Satterwhite's unique approach doesn't just explain how people view Appalachia, it explains why they think that way. This innovative book will be a noteworthy contribution to Appalachian studies, cultural and literary studies, and reception theory.

Some of these sites, such as city hall, are not generally associated with women; some are sites of long-forgotten women's activities; others, such as kitchens, usually assumed to be women's domain, reflect unexpected complexities of meaning. Eleven essays explore possibilities for using women's history and feminist analysis to look at familiar places through the lens of gender. Case studies become guides for interpreting or reinterpreting similar places. The text also contains lists of suggested sources pertaining to the subjects presented. The sites analyzed here include homes, gardens, factories, cemeteries, business districts, and even entire communities. They are places to learn about women running millinery shops, surviving in a new country by working in another woman's kitchen, stripping tobacco leaves in a factory in the South, laboring for slave owners, commemorating achievement, and mourning the dead. This collection of essays is designed to be useful to teachers and historical societies searching their own communities for new sites significant to the his
