Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remarks on Some Masonic Book Plates and Their Owners In the preparation of my remarks on some American Masonic Book Plates and their owners I have had valuable assistance from Secretaries and librarians connected with the Craft, also from brother collectors. Mr. Frederick J. Libbie of Boston, loaned me from his personal collee tion original impressions of the Danforth and Ketchum plates for the purpose of reproduction here. I have been favored in the same man ner by some of the Brethren, also by friends not connected with the institution but whose plates bear the symbols of their profession, which have the same character as Masonic plates. The well known collector, Mr. Walter C. Prescott of Newton Center, Mass. Rendered important assistance, as also did Brother Hen ry Mitchell of the Studio Building, Boston, and also the members of the John A. Lowell Bank Note Co. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters and Addresses on Freemasonry This kindness of Mr. Gridley was never forgot ten by my father; I trust it never will be forgotten by his children. From that day forth, while Mr. Gridley lived, he was the intimate friend, per sonal and professional, of my father. He died in 1767. My father often resorted to him for friend ly counsel, and, as he was grand master of the lodge, once asked his advice, whether it was worth his while to become a member of the society. In the candor of friendship Mr. Gridley answered him, No, adding that by aggregation to the soci ety a young man might acquire a little artificial support, but that he did not need it, and that there was nothing in the Masonic institution worthy of his seeking to be associated with it. So said at that time the Grand Master of the Massachusetts Masons, Jeremy Gridley; and such, I have repeatedly heard my father say, was the reason why he never joined the lodge. This book was released on 2018-10-13 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Freemasonry in the Thirteen Colonies The publication of the original chapters in the Grand Lodge Bulletin of Iowa brought the author most wel come and valuable comments from his colleagues in the Masonic library and periodical field. Appropriate cor rections have been made in the present volume where such were called for; new matter was received which has been added wherever advisable. Yet to include all the information submitted would require an augmenta tion of the volume far exceeding its primary scope and purpose; the complete recital belongs more properly to the larger individual histories of each jurisdiction affected. The temptation also existed to include matter related to ritual and jurisprudence; but these are sub jects worthy of separate treatment, with due considera tion for the limitations which Masonic propriety and the recognized conservatism of the Masonic institution impose upon Craft writers. Book The Johannite Masons

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Johannite Masons: And the Star in the East But no institution has been called on to encounter such a tedious war with prejudice as Freemasonry, because its improvements are of a less obvious nature. Its whole career has been a scene of contention with the vindictive feelings of mankind, which have arrayed against it a catalogue of charges, all of which may be traced to the operation of prejudice. The exclusion of females formed a never-failing accusation which enlisted the sympathies of the softer sex, and through their powerful influence, a 'wide circle in every locality was arrayed against the Order. In like manner the practice of secrecy was interpreted into a vehicle to cover plots and conspiracies against the altar and the throne; the alleged solemnity of the Mason-oath was considered a mockery of sacred things; and many other matters, which need not be particularized here, were converted, from the 'mere effects of prejudice, into defects which were considered inconsistent with an institution that boasts of its purity and benevolence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Universal Masonic Library, Vol. 10: A Republication, in Thirty Volumes, of All the Standard Publications in Masonry In the present extension of Freemasonry, when it flourishes abundantly in every quarter of the globe, and embraces many objects of research, which our brethren, even of the eighteenth century, did not entertain; and when spurious rituals have been offered to public notice, professing to contain a description of the entire secrets, pursuits, and machinery of the Craft, it becomes a duty of no inconsiderable moment, to place the Institution on its proper basis, as a society which blends science and morals, unites benevolence and philosophy, and displays an example of paternal union which is sought in vain amidst other scenes in these times of religious and political excitement.
