Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on images of disguise in literature, theater, and opera, this short-story cycle explores themes of identity and subterfuge in a fictional fugue that ranges from comic to poignant. Into the librettos of Don Giovanni, Tosca, Rigoletto, and other operas, Green weaves the authentic biographies of their singers and composers, modern-day settings, and his own imaginative twists. Throughout Voices in a Mask, characters obscure and reveal themselves as art mimics life and life, art. Ultimately the very acts of masking and projecting reveal a truth about the power of art and its inherent deceptions.

Book excerpt: Masks are everywhere. What do kids think about that? When Lucy finds out her mom is making her a special mask she's excited. Lucy loves masks! She dives into her toy box full of costumes and opens a world of imagination and make-believe adventure, far beyond the walls of her room. Of course, she doesn't realize that the mask her mom is making is not part of a costume but one that will keep her safe and make her a real-life superhero. This book is not a science lesson about germs and protection. It's a simple fun story that helps make mask-wearing more relatable and less scary. Parents and educators have found it to be a wonderful tool to start a conversation about germs, viruses, the pandemic, and what families have to do to keep themselves and others safe. For children heading to schools that will require them to wear masks, and for parents, grandparents and teachers looking for stories that give comfort and reassurance to kids about the changes around them, Lucy's Mask is a welcome addition to reading time. Lucy's Mask was a Finalist in the 2021 Next Generation Indie Book Awards.

Book Ethnographic Feminisms

Download or read book Ethnographic Feminisms written by Sally Cole and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1995-05-15 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written by anthropologists who are currently engaged in research on gender. The editors argue for the development of an ethnography-based feminism that both pays heed to what women in specific circumstances identify as their concerns and recognizes the contradictions inherent in the goals of feminist anthropology. The essays consider a range of "awkward" issues, including feminism in international contexts, the invisibility of women's working lives, and the problems of voice and ethnographic representation. Referring to a variety of ethnographic contexts, and working from diverse perspectives, the contributors examine the multiple dilemmas and conflicts of gender and power.

Book What You Pretend Not to Know

Download or read book What You Pretend Not to Know written by Joanne Suarez and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People like to wear masks all the time, and I'm not talking about the masks we're wearing now due to the pandemic. I'm talking about the masks we put on when we are interacting with others. We hide who we really are and we transform into a different person depending on the setting. We put on a mask when we meet relatives, we put on a mask at our work, and we put on a mask on when we are with friends (most of them). And the only time we are not wearing a mask is when we are alone. Not all of us do it in the same degree, and there are different reasons for doing it. But the most common is that we are afraid of being criticized and judged. So we look for acceptance in others and we conform. We are not sure of what our real selves will be like, so we become what we think will be liked more. If we are introverts, we change a bit to seem more extravert. If we are weird, we become more "normal" to fit in. We hide what makes us unique and authentic because we are not sure others will like it. And many times we are being rewarded for it. People seem to approve of this new, upgraded version of you, so you keep the small change. Then people expect you to behave like that, so you have to keep the facade. And then you add a bit more, and a bit more, until you are different enough to exhaust yourself by playing this role. I believe this is the main reason some people exhaust themselves in social settings. The mask needs energy to stay in place. This is not the same as being casual and carefree with friends, and more formal and careful at work settings. This is normal. In this book, you will learn how to hide part of your personality based on the premise of approval. Stop pretending to be someone you are not. It is ok to be yourself. The only one that needs to accept you is YOU!Peace & Love
