Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WINNER OF: Frantz Fanon Outstanding Book from the Caribbean Philosophical Association Canadian Political Science Association’s C.B. MacPherson Prize Studies in Political Economy Book Prize Over the past forty years, recognition has become the dominant mode of negotiation and decolonization between the nation-state and Indigenous nations in North America. The term “recognition” shapes debates over Indigenous cultural distinctiveness, Indigenous rights to land and self-government, and Indigenous peoples’ right to benefit from the development of their lands and resources. In a work of critically engaged political theory, Glen Sean Coulthard challenges recognition as a method of organizing difference and identity in liberal politics, questioning the assumption that contemporary difference and past histories of destructive colonialism between the state and Indigenous peoples can be reconciled through a process of acknowledgment. Beyond this, Coulthard examines an alternative politics—one that seeks to revalue, reconstruct, and redeploy Indigenous cultural practices based on self-recognition rather than on seeking appreciation from the very agents of colonialism. Coulthard demonstrates how a “place-based” modification of Karl Marx’s theory of “primitive accumulation” throws light on Indigenous–state relations in settler-colonial contexts and how Frantz Fanon’s critique of colonial recognition shows that this relationship reproduces itself over time. This framework strengthens his exploration of the ways that the politics of recognition has come to serve the interests of settler-colonial power. In addressing the core tenets of Indigenous resistance movements, like Red Power and Idle No More, Coulthard offers fresh insights into the politics of active decolonization.

Download or read book Multiple Masks written by Maureen A. Carr and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Multiple Masks, Maureen A. Carr studies Igor Stravinsky's creative process for Oedipus Rex, Apollo, Persäphone, and Orpheus through his musical sketches and other documents?scenarios, librettos, correspondence, reviews, and philosophical commentaries, as well as previously uncited sources for Stravinsky's book Poetics of Music. A clear explanation of Stravinsky's compositional techniques within a broad cultural context emerges for each of these four significant works. Carr concludes that Stravinsky used Greek myths as filters for certain poetic ideas and musical techniques that he developed in his earlier works. At the same time the mythological story lines provided him with the objective stance that he was seeking in these neoclassical works.

Book excerpt: Young Lord Somershill flees England for the wonders of Venice, where he becomes involved in a bizarre murder investigation that plunges him into the depths of this secretive medieval city. It’s 1358, and young Oswald de Lacy, Lord Somershill, is delayed in Venice as he awaits a pilgrim ship to the Holy Land. While the city is besieged by the King of Hungary, Oswald stays at the house of an English merchant, and soon comes under the spell of this decadent and dazzling island state that sits on the edge of Europe—where East meets West. But Oswald has secrets. He is running away from something in England—a shadow that still haunts him, no matter how much he consoles himself with the delights of Venice. When he finds a dead man at the carnival, he is dragged into a murder investigation that draws him deep into the intrigues of this paranoid, mysterious city. From the dungeons of the Doge’s Palace to the convent-brothel of Santa Lucia, Oswald must search for a murderer in this bewildering maze of alleys and canals. When he comes up against the feared Signori di Notte, the secret police, Oswald learns that he is not the only one with something to hide. Everyone is watching (or trailing) someone else; and nobody in Venice is who they appear to be. Masks, it seems, are not only for the carnival.

Book Frantz Fanon s Black Skin White Masks

Download or read book Frantz Fanon s Black Skin White Masks written by Max Silverman and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1952, Frantz Fanon's 'Black Skin, White Masks' is one of the most important anti-colonial works of the post-war period. It is both a profound critique of the conscious and unconcious ways in which colonialism brutalises the colonised and a passionate cry from deep within a black body alienated by the colonial system and in search of liberation from it. This volume is the first collection of essays specifically devoted to Fanon's text. It offers a wide range of interpretations of the text by leading scholars in a number of disciplines. Chapters deal with Fanon's Martinican heritage, Fanon and Creolism, ideas of race and racism and new humanism, Fanon and Sartre, representations of Blacks and Jews, and the psychoanalysis of race, gender and violence. Contributors offer new ways of reading the text and the volume as a whole constitutes an important contribution to the growing field of Fanon studies.

Book Vows Veils and Masks

Download or read book Vows Veils and Masks written by Beth Wynstra and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2023-07-07 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vows, Veils, and Masks offers a bold and timely approach to the plays of Eugene O’Neill with its attention to the engagements, weddings, and marriages so crucial to the tragic action in O’Neill’s works. Specifically, the book examines the culturally sanctioned traditions and gender roles that underscored marital life in the early twentieth century, and that still haunt and define love and partnership in the modern age. Weaving in artifacts like advice columns, advertisements, theatrical reviews, and even the lived experiences of the actors who brought O’Neill’s wife characters to life, Beth Wynstra points to new ways of seeing and empathizing with those who are betrothed and new possibilities for reading marriage in literary and dramatic works. She suggests that the various ways women were, and still are, expected to divert from their true ambitions, desires, and selves in the service of appropriate wifely behavior is a detrimental performance and one at the crux of O’Neill’s marital tragedies. This book invites more inclusive and nuanced ways of thinking about the choices married characters must make and the roles they play, both on and off the stage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of Masks and Mirrors is a collection of poetry written over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. A year that has struck the entire world deeply but has more than ever taught us the value of art – be it literature, music, visual art, or poetry. This collection has sought to combine reverence for the past greats and the long-standing tradition of English literature with a sense of actuality and innovation. Traditional form and meter are indispensable to Capelle’s verse and style of writing. This work is to be a journey through a world where the territory is not always tranquil and safe, at times even treacherous and completely lost in archaism. This journey, however, will always find herself back in the marvels, wonders and miracles of (human) nature and whatever beauty it is that we have been granted possession over. Its purpose is very much to console, reassure and comfort every soul that comes along, as literature has always managed to do.
