Download or read book Music in Cyprus written by Jim Samson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music in Cyprus draws its authors from both sides of the divided island to give a rounded picture of musical culture from the beginning of the British colonial period (1878-1960) until today. The book crosses conventional scholarly divides between musicology and ethnomusicology in order to achieve a panorama of music, culture and politics. Shared practices of traditional music and dance are outlined, and the appropriation of those practices by both communities in the aftermath of the de facto division of the island is examined. Art music (European and Ottoman) is also discussed, both in terms of the structures of musical life and the creative praxes of composers, and there is an account of the early stages of a popular music industry. The authors consider such questions as: What is the role of different musics in defining national, regional, social and cultural identities in Cyprus? How do Cypriot alterities illuminate European projects of modernity? And what has been the impact of westernization and modernization (and, conversely, of orientalization) on music in Cyprus? The book will be of interest to students and academics working not only in both historical musicology and ethnomusicology, but also in the history and anthropology of Cyprus and of the entire Greek-Anatolian region.

This book was released on 2023-01-09 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a globalized world full of noise, brands are constantly launching messages through different channels. For the last two decades, brands, marketers, and creatives have faced the difficult task of reaching those individuals who do not want to watch or listen to what they are trying to tell them. By producing fewer ads or making them louder or more striking, more brands and communications professionals are not going to get those people to pay more attention to their messages; they will only want to avoid advertising in all media. Book Research Anthology on Feminist Studies and Gender Perceptions

Download or read book Research Anthology on Feminist Studies and Gender Perceptions written by Management Association, Information Resources and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2022-01-21 with total page 779 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global society has always been impacted by the perception of gender. While gender roles may differ in certain cultures, many cultures around the world have allowed for the disempowerment and objectification of women. Women today still struggle for gender equality whether it be professionally, socially, or even legally. To examine feminism thoroughly, however, thorough analysis must be conducted on all genders and perceptions. The Research Anthology on Feminist Studies and Gender Perceptions explores the application of feminist theory and women empowerment in the 21st century and the role that gender plays in society. This book analyzes media representation, gender performativity, and theory to present a comprehensive view of gender and society. Covering topics such as masculinity, women empowerment, and gender equality, this two-volume comprehensive major reference work is an essential resource for sociologists, community leaders, human resource managers, activists, students and professors of higher education, researchers, and academicians.

Book Context and Circumstance

Download or read book Context and Circumstance written by Gareth Jenkins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Debates about military influence on civilian government tend to be partisan and rarely pay sufficient attention to specific contexts. This paper analyses, without condemnation or justification, why and how the military exercises such influence in Turkey and whether it is likely to continue to do so. It argues that the role of the military in Turkey grows out of a specific Turkish context and is more a symptom than a cause of the country's flawed democracy. It examines the Turkish officer ethos, particularly the role of the indigenous ideology of Kemalism, and the broad, though not universal, public mandate for an interventionist role in politics. It contends that the military's influence is neither uniform nor total and that it is more effective at blocking than initiating policy; thus creating a system in which civilian authority is primary rather than supreme. It analyses the mechanisms through which the military attempts to shape policy, and demonstrates how its influence depends more on its informal authority than legislated rights or responsibilities. The paper suggests that fears of threats to national security resulting from the reforms required for EU accession have made the military more, not less, reluctant to withdraw from the political arena. It concludes that, regardless of the future of Turkey's candidacy, such a withdrawal will be a slow and gradual process, dependent more on changes in Turkish social and political culture and the perceived security environment than in the military itself.

Book Let Them Not Return

Download or read book Let Them Not Return written by David Gaunt and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mass killing of Ottoman Armenians is today widely recognized, both within and outside scholarly circles, as an act of genocide. What is less well known, however, is that it took place within a broader context of Ottoman violence against minority groups during and after the First World War. Among those populations decimated were the indigenous Christian Assyrians (also known as Syriacs or Chaldeans) who lived in the borderlands of present-day Turkey, Iran, and Iraq. This volume is the first scholarly edited collection focused on the Assyrian genocide, or “Sayfo” (literally, “sword” in Aramaic), presenting historical, psychological, anthropological, and political perspectives that shed much-needed light on a neglected historical atrocity.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Faruk Yücel

Download or read book Translation and Gender written by Faruk Yücel and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2024-01-02 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language as a complex and dynamic phenomenon is an important instrument for reflecting individual and social identity. The formation of languages under the influence of specific norms and rules, which depend on historical and cultural developments, goes beyond their mere use as a means of communication. Languages are used to formulate thoughts, express emotions, demonstrate behaviour and produce artistic texts as skills and actions. Languages are also used to exert pressure, direct thoughts and influence people. Especially since the 1970s, under the influence of women's rights and feminist approaches in the West, language has played a prominent role in the reflection on gender and identity in cultural, linguistic and literary studies. This influence has led to an increased awareness of how language shapes and perpetuates concepts of gender and identity. Against this backdrop, this thesis will analyse various dimensions of the linguistic construction of gender and identity and examine their impact on socio-cultural structures. Translation and Gender: Beyond Power and Boundaries is an anthology of studies that analyse in depth the connections between translation and gender, translation and women, and translation and feminist understanding. The publication offers the opportunity to discuss various topics and answer questions related to different approaches.

Book The Precarious Lives of Syrians

Download or read book The Precarious Lives of Syrians written by Feyzi Baban and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2021-09-15 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turkey now hosts the largest number of Syrian refugees in the world, more than 3.6 million of the 12.7 million displaced by the Syrian Civil War. Many of them are subject to an unpredictable temporary protection, forcing them to live under vulnerable and insecure conditions. The Precarious Lives of Syrians examines the three dimensions of the architecture of precarity: Syrian migrants' legal status, the spaces in which they live and work, and their movements within and outside Turkey. The difficulties they face include restricted access to education and healthcare, struggles to secure employment, language barriers, identity-based discrimination, and unlawful deportations. Feyzi Baban, Suzan Ilcan, and Kim Rygiel show that Syrians confront their precarious conditions by engaging in cultural production and community-building activities, and by undertaking perilous journeys to Europe, allowing them to claim spaces and citizenship while asserting their rights to belong, to stay, and to escape. The authors draw on migration policies, legal and scholarly materials, and five years of extensive field research with local, national, and international humanitarian organizations, and with Syrians from all walks of life. The Precarious Lives of Syrians offers a thoughtful and compelling analysis of migration precarity in our contemporary context.
