Book Masada Revisited Iii and Other Plays

Download or read book Masada Revisited Iii and Other Plays written by Arthur Ziffer and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-02-25 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains six plays with titles: Masada Revisited III Irresistible Impulse Redemption Isaac and Amanda One Plus One Equals One Hypatia Masada Revisited III contains all of the material contained in two other published plays of the author, with titles Masada Revisited and Masada Revisited II, except for two scenes which contain material of a historical and religious nature. Masada is a site in modern-day Israel near the Dead Sea. It was the last stronghold of the Jews in the Jewish War against the Romans which lasted from 66 AD to 70 AD. According to some versions of history the mountain top fortress, Masada, was able to withstand a Roman siege that lasted for three years until 73 AD when the Romans finally captured the fortress. According to the historian Josephus, when the Romans did finally enter the fortress, all they found were dead bodies, except for two women and five children hiding in a cave. Irresistible Impulse had two earlier published versions with titles Death of a Psychiatrist and Retribution. Hypatia is a play about a real woman who lived in Alexandria Egypt in the later part of the fourth century AD and early part of the fifth century AD. The play is only partly historical.

Book Masada Revisited Iii

Book excerpt: Masada Revisited III gives a different view of what happened at Masada in 73 ce when the Jewish defenders, according to the only historical account, given by the historian Josephus in his book The Jewish War, essentially committed mass suicide. Many Jewish people are disconcerted by this. Since Josephus wrote under the constraint of trying to please the Romans, his accuracy is suspect. The version given in this play is hopefully more palatable.

Book Countertransference and Other Plays

Download or read book Countertransference and Other Plays written by Arthur Ziffer and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-08-17 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of four plays. The first one is a three scene play, Countertransference. The first scene is a modification of a play of the same name from an earlier Xlibris publication, Countertransference and Retribution, consisting of two plays with names as indicated. The second play, Irresistible Impulse is a two act play which is a modification of the play Retribution from the aforementioned Xlibris publication. The third play, Masada Revisited II is a play about a famous incident in Jewish history that occurred in 73 C.E. It is about the last stronghold of the Jews in the war against the Romans that began in 66 C.E in the region that is Israel today. Masada, a mountaintop fortress near the Dead Sea was the last stronghold of the Jews which the Romans besieged for, supposedly, three years. On the night before when it was very likely that the fortress would be captured by the Romans the next day, the Jewish defenders committed mass suicide so that when the Romans entered the fortress the next morning all they found were dead bodies. This comes down in history from one author, Josephus, a Roman Jewish author. Since Josephus wrote to satisfy the Romans, his version of what happened is suspect. The play in this book gives a different take on what happened there. The last play, On the Shoulders of Giants is a play about the famous mathematician Isaac Newton. This play was co-authored with Herbert Hauptman. Herbert Hauptman was the first mathematician to win a Nobel Prize. Since there is no prize in mathematics, he won it in chemistry in 1985 for his work in applying mathematics (Advanced Probability) to crystallography. John Nash of A Beautiful Mind was the second mathematician to win a Nobel Prize. He won it for his work in applying mathematics (Game Theory) to economics.

Book Masada Revisited

    Book Details:
  • Author : Arthur Ziffer
  • Publisher : iUniverse
  • Release : 2011-12
  • ISBN : 9781462074372
  • Pages : 76 pages

Download or read book Masada Revisited written by Arthur Ziffer and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The play "Masada Revisited" is a semi - fictionalized retelling in play form of an incident set in the locale of Masada, a place near the Dead Sea in modern day Israel, that occurred in 73 ce. It refers to the last event of the Jewish War against the Romans that lasted from 66 ce to 70 ce with cleanup operations lasting until 73 ce, Masada being the last one. The only historical refence is from the book "The Jewish War Against the Romans" written by the historian Josephus who lived in the first century ce. Josephus was not an eyewitness to the incident and was notoriously inaccurate sometimes as well as having to write under the constraint of ingratiating himself with his Roman sponsors. Many Jewish people object to the original form of the story. This version is, hopefully, less objectionable. "The book "Judas the Galilean" by Daniel Unterbrink published by iUniverse contains some background material that is referred to in the play "Masada Revisited.""

Book Josephus in Modern Jewish Culture

Download or read book Josephus in Modern Jewish Culture written by Andrea Schatz and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-05-20 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions to this volume trace for the first time how the modern Jewish reception of Josephus, the ancient historian who witnessed and described the destruction of the Second Temple, took shape within different scholarly, religious, literary and political contexts across the Jewish world, from Amsterdam to Berlin, Vilna, Breslau, New York and Tel Aviv. The chapters show how the vagaries of his tumultuous life, spent between a small rebellious nation and the ruling circles of a vast empire, between Jewish and non-Jewish cultures, and between political action and historical reflection have been re-imagined by Jewish readers over the past three centuries in their attempts to make sense of their own times. "The project and this volume can encourage greater awareness of the complex origins of Josephus’ controversial reputation as a Jewish priest, diplomat in Rome, military leader of the first Jewish revolt against the Romans, as an advocate for surrender to imperial forces, as a witness to the Hurban, as a citizen of Rome, and as a historian....Recommended highly for all Jewish and academic libraries." - David B Levy, Touro College, NYC, in: Association of Jewish Libraries News and Review 1.2 (2019)

Book excerpt: The label 'Suicide Cults' has been applied to a wide variety of different alternative religions, from Jonestown to the Solar Temple to Heaven's Gate. Additionally, observers have asked if such group suicides are in any way comparable to Islamist suicide terrorism, or to historical incidents of mass suicide, such as the mass suicide of the ancient community of Masada. Organizationally and ideologically diverse, it turns out that the primary shared trait of these various groups is a common stereotype of religion as an irrational force that pushes fanatics to undertake acts of suicidal violence. Offering a valuable perspective on New Religious Movements and on religion and violence, Sacred Suicide brings together contributions from a diverse range of international scholars of sociology, religious studies and criminology.

Book A Thousand Splendid Suns Play Script

Download or read book A Thousand Splendid Suns Play Script written by Ursula Rani Sarma and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The script for the stage production of the bestselling Khaled Hosseini novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, as adapted by playwright Ursula Rani Sarma. Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss, and by fate. As they endure the ever-escalating dangers around them--in their home, as well as in the streets of Kabul--they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power and suspense, playwright Ursula Rani Sarma reimagines Hosseini's novel to show how a woman's love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival. A stunning accomplishment, this reimagination of A Thousand Splendid Suns is a haunting, heartbreaking, compelling production about unlikely friendship and indestructible love. This adaptation was first performed by the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco in February 2017.

Book The Warsaw Ghetto in American Art and Culture

Download or read book The Warsaw Ghetto in American Art and Culture written by Samantha Baskind and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the eve of Passover, April 19, 1943, Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto staged a now legendary revolt against their Nazi oppressors. Since that day, the deprivation and despair of life in the ghetto and the dramatic uprising of its inhabitants have captured the American cultural imagination. The Warsaw Ghetto in American Art and Culture looks at how this place and its story have been remembered in fine art, film, television, radio, theater, fiction, poetry, and comics. Samantha Baskind explores seventy years’ worth of artistic representations of the ghetto and revolt to understand why they became and remain touchstones in the American mind. Her study includes iconic works such as Leon Uris’s best-selling novel Mila 18, Roman Polanski’s Academy Award–winning film The Pianist, and Rod Serling’s teleplay In the Presence of Mine Enemies, as well as accounts in the American Jewish Yearbook and the New York Times, the art of Samuel Bak and Arthur Szyk, and the poetry of Yala Korwin and Charles Reznikoff. In probing these works, Baskind pursues key questions of Jewish identity: What links artistic representations of the ghetto to the Jewish diaspora? How is art politicized or depoliticized? Why have Americans made such a strong cultural claim on the uprising? Vibrantly illustrated and vividly told, The Warsaw Ghetto in American Art and Culture shows the importance of the ghetto as a site of memory and creative struggle and reveals how this seminal event and locale served as a staging ground for the forging of Jewish American identity.
