Book excerpt: This book contains six plays with titles: Masada Revisited III Irresistible Impulse Redemption Isaac and Amanda One Plus One Equals One Hypatia Masada Revisited III contains all of the material contained in two other published plays of the author, with titles Masada Revisited and Masada Revisited II, except for two scenes which contain material of a historical and religious nature. Masada is a site in modern-day Israel near the Dead Sea. It was the last stronghold of the Jews in the Jewish War against the Romans which lasted from 66 AD to 70 AD. According to some versions of history the mountain top fortress, Masada, was able to withstand a Roman siege that lasted for three years until 73 AD when the Romans finally captured the fortress. According to the historian Josephus, when the Romans did finally enter the fortress, all they found were dead bodies, except for two women and five children hiding in a cave. Irresistible Impulse had two earlier published versions with titles Death of a Psychiatrist and Retribution. Hypatia is a play about a real woman who lived in Alexandria Egypt in the later part of the fourth century AD and early part of the fifth century AD. The play is only partly historical.

This standard account collapsed, however, when a handful of insights undermined the traditional historical method, the method long enlisted by historians for eliciting facts from sources. In response to these insights, a new historical method gradually emerged. Rewriting Ancient Jewish History critiques the traditional historical method and makes a case for the new one, illustrating how to write anew ancient Jewish history. At the heart of the traditional historical method lie three fundamental presumptions. The traditional historical method regularly presumes that multiple versions of a text or tradition are equally authentic; it presumes that many ancient Jewish sources are the products of largely immanent forces of cloistered Jewish communities; and, barring any local grounds for suspicion, it presumes that most ancient Jewish texts faithfully reflect their sources and reliably recount events. Rewriting Ancient Jewish History unfurls the failings of this approach; it promotes the new historical method which circumvents the flawed traditional presumptions while plotting anew the limits of rational argumentation in historical inquiry. In Recovered Roots, Yael Zerubavel illuminates this dynamic process by examining the construction of Israeli national tradition. In the years leading to the birth of Israel, Zerubavel shows, Zionist settlers in Palestine consciously sought to rewrite Jewish history by reshaping Jewish memory. Zerubavel focuses on the nationalist reinterpretation of the defense of Masada against the Romans in 73 C.E. and the Bar Kokhba revolt of 133-135; and on the transformation of the 1920 defense of a new Jewish settlement in Tel Hai into a national myth. The third play, Masada Revisited II is a play about a famous incident in Jewish history that occurred in 73 C.E. It is about the last stronghold of the Jews in the war against the Romans that began in 66 C.E in the region that is Israel today. Masada, a mountaintop fortress near the Dead Sea was the last stronghold of the Jews which the Romans besieged for, supposedly, three years. On the night before when it was very likely that the fortress would be captured by the Romans the next day, the Jewish defenders committed mass suicide so that when the Romans entered the fortress the next morning all they found were dead bodies. This comes down in history from one author, Josephus, a Roman Jewish author. Since Josephus wrote to satisfy the Romans, his version of what happened is suspect. The play in this book gives a different take on what happened there. The last play, On the Shoulders of Giants is a play about the famous mathematician Isaac Newton. This play was co-authored with Herbert Hauptman. Herbert Hauptman was the first mathematician to win a Nobel Prize. Since there is no prize in mathematics, he won it in chemistry in 1985 for his work in applying mathematics (Advanced Probability) to crystallography. John Nash of A Beautiful Mind was the second mathematician to win a Nobel Prize. He won it for his work in applying mathematics (Game Theory) to economics.

Book excerpt: Memory and the Impact of Political Transformation in Public Space explores the effects of major upheavals—wars, decolonization, and other social and economic changes—on the ways in which public histories are presented around the world. Examining issues related to public memory in twelve countries, the histories collected here cut across political, cultural, and geographic divisions. At the same time, by revealing recurring themes and concerns, they show how basic issues of history and memory transcend specific sites and moments in time. A number of the essays look at contests over public memory following two major political transformations: the wave of liberation from colonial rule in much of Africa, Asia, and Central and South America during the second half of the twentieth century and the reorganization of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet bloc beginning in the late 1980s. This collection expands the scope of what is considered public history by pointing to silences and absences that are as telling as museums and memorials.
