Book Evidence Based Crime Prevention

Download or read book Evidence Based Crime Prevention written by David P. Farrington and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crime prevention policy and practice is, on the whole, far from objective. Instead of being based on scientific evidence, the crime policy agenda is seemingly driven by political ideology, anecdotal evidence and programme trends. Evidence-Based Crime Prevention seeks to change this by comprehensively and rigorously assessing the existing scientific knowledge on the effectiveness of crime prevention programmes internationally. Reviewing more than 600 scientific evaluations of programmes intended to prevent crime in settings such as families, schools, labour markets and communities, this book grades programmes on their scientific validity using the 'scientific methods scale'. This collection, which brings together contributions from leading researchers in the field of crime prevention, will provide policy-makers, researchers and community leaders with an understandable source of information about what works, what does not work and what is promising in preventing crime.

Book excerpt: Fans of Serial and Making a Murderer, meet Kirk Bloodsworth, the first death row inmate exonerated by DNA evidence. Charged with the rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl in 1984, Bloodsworth was tried, convicted, and sentenced to die in Maryland's gas chamber. From the beginning, he proclaimed his innocence, but when he was granted a new trial because his prosecutors improperly withheld evidence, the second trial also resulted in conviction. Bloodsworth read every book on criminal law in the prison library and persuaded a new lawyer to petition for the then-innovative DNA testing. After nine years in one of the harshest prisons in America, Bloodsworth was vindicated by DNA evidence. Intense and hard-hitting, Bloodsworth is the story of a man’s tireless fight against a justice system that failed him.

Download or read book Evidence Law Analyzed written by Lynn McLain and published by Vandeplas Pub.. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evidence Law Analyzed (2nd ed.) provides explanations of and problems regarding each area of evidence addressed by the Federal Rules of Evidence, all of which are covered by the Multi-State bar examination. The author gives special emphasis to the determination of hearsay v. nonhearsay, the new analysis of the confrontation clause after Crawford v. Washington, and preservation of the record for appeal. She also highlights differences between the federal rules and the state evidence code found in Title 5 of the Maryland Rules. Flow charts on hearsay and the confrontation clause are included. Problems and questions are designed to test readers' understanding of the evidence rules and the policy decisions underlying them. The author encourages readers to analyze how the evidence rules shape litigation outcomes and whether either the federal or Maryland rules should be revised. The book includes landmark cases, as well as recent case law exemplifying the application of the rules. Evidence issues are best won at trial. So that students may see the rules applied in the context of complete trials, appendices set forth two trial transcripts, one criminal and one civil, to which references are made throughout the text. About the author: Lynn McLain, Professor and Dean Joseph Curtis Faculty Fellow Emerita at the University of Baltimore School of Law, earned her J.D., with distinction, from Duke Law School. She has received several teaching awards at the University of Baltimore, is a life fellow of the Maryland Bar Foundation, and is a frequent lecturer at the Maryland Judicial Institute. Professor McLain is the author of a widely-cited three-volume treatise on the Maryland and Federal Rules of Evidence as well as another book devoted solely to the Maryland Rules of Evidence. She served as a Special Reporter to the Maryland Court of Appeals' Rules Committee during the drafting and adoption of Maryland's code of evidence. Professor McLain has continued as a consultant to the Rules Committee on evidence issues and has been active in evidence law reform efforts in Maryland, particularly regarding witness child abuse and witness intimidation.

Book excerpt: An essential guide to understanding the health benefits of marijuana and CBD Marijuana has been used for thousands of years as a medicine, but pot has been illegal in the United States for most of our lives. Almost all states have now legalized its medical use, and many consumers and physicians are exploring it as an alternative to conventional treatments. There’s substantial evidence that marijuana (cannabis) is a safe and effective treatment for chronic pain, chemo side effects, sleep and mood disorders, MS, and Parkinson’s disease, among others. But there’s also misinformation about marijuana on social media. And most physicians have limited knowledge on the subject, while dispensary staff (aka “budtenders”) lack medical training. Mikhail Kogan, MD, a renowned expert on medical marijuana, has found that cannabinoids (THC, CBD, hemp, and other cannabis products) can often be more beneficial, have fewer side effects, and be safer than many conventional medications, including opioids and other painkillers. But different ailments require different strains, doses, and routes of delivery. Medical Marijuana demystifies marijuana and other forms of cannabis in a user-friendly guide that will help readers: • Understand how marijuana morphed from the days of “Reefer Madness” to being hailed as a wonder weed • Navigate the complex medical and legal world of marijuana • Understand the risks and benefits of THC, CBD, and other cannabis products • Evaluate the pros and cons of inhaled and other routes of delivery: edibles, topicals, and even suppositories • Find a doctor who can recommend medical cannabis • Choose a reliable dispensary • Learn how to evaluate labels on cannabis products • Discover cost-saving strategies since medical marijuana isn’t covered by health insurance With real-life patients’ stories woven throughout the book, simple explanatory graphics, and the most up-to-date information, this is the definitive guide to the wide-ranging benefits of medical marijuana and other forms of cannabis.
