But, looking to the general result, there is no room for any other emotion than that of profound gratitude to Heaven for the signal favour with which the operations of the Society have been blessed. Certainly has so far surpassed all other traders on this coast, and that too, at the saving of considerable expense to which traders are subject to in lading and unlading their cargo. Instead Of having to pass thr ugh the bar to and from his vessel to land cargo, all was done at our wh s to the gratification of those who made purchases of Capt. B., - to crown the whole affair, near the close of his sales, he gave invitations to some of our citizens to partake of a lunch with him on ship board. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maryland Colonization Journal, Vol. 3: January, 1847 The very ground work Of African colonization, from first to last, both among its slavery and anti-slavery supporters, has been, that equality, poli tical or social, between the African and Caucasian race can never exist on this continent, that the lesser, of course the weaker race, must serve or flee. This doctrine, however kindly and judiciously announced, must always to the one party be extremely unpalatable, but when reiterated and enlarged Upon by excited declaimers, with a free application of epithets, not the most flattering to the coloured people, its only effect is to steel their hearts against all that can promise them or their posterity nationality or worldly good - to generate in them the Nolt' me' tangere of a most inveterate character.
