Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maryland Colonization Journal, Vol. 2: February, 1844 It is our decided opinion, for various reasons, that they should be remov ed, not only from Charles county, but from the State. The committee think in truth, that for social and intellectual improvement, they ought to be transported from America, beyond the Atlantic Ocean; and that Liberia or Maryland in Africa, is the proper place in which they should be settled. The committee will now give their reasons for this conviction; and for that purpose, we will show the means of transportation, and the resources that will be placed in their power in Africa, arising from the fertility of the region to which they will be removed, the natural advantages to be enjoyed from a fortunate or favorable location, a congenial climate, and the full means there will exist, that they may become a great, prosperous and hap py people; and furnish a solution of the problem, as to the capacity of the black species of the human race, for high moral and intellectual improve ment. For the purposes of showing the agricultural and other resources of the colony, the committee will quote from various and unquestionable authority. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maryland Colonization Journal, Vol. 2: May, 1844 Bush of Cape Palmas, - and three days did not elapse before the sound of his anvil was heard, forging the iron work for mounting our guns. As the colony increased, new military companies were formed, and as Captain Wood was the oldest commander, he received a major's commis sion. He has also been called to fill various civil offices in the colony, holds a justice's commission and been once or twice elected vice-agent, the highest office in the gift of the people. As far as our knowledge ex tends, he has ever discharged the duties devolving upon him, either as a civil or military officer, with integrity and ability, and his private character, as we before remarked, has ever been unexceptionable - sometimes, to be sure, rather hot in a political contest, but if with a wrong head, always with a sound and patriotic heart. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maryland Colonization Journal, Vol. 4: December, 1847 On a question of such magnitude as slavery - involving as it does, the interests of millions, and, it may be, the destiny of two continents, I should not presume to lift a pen, were it not, that my opportunities of a personal and intimate acquaintance with the subject have been somewhat peculiar. Being a native of New England, and imbibing as I did at an early age, an utter aversion of the system - residing afterwards nearly twenty years in different slave-holding States - travelling frequently and extensively in every State in the Union, where slavery exists - addressing large and popular assemblies of both colours - aiding in the promotion of Sabbath Schools and Bible classes among the blacks-conversing freely with master and slave, respecting the relation they sustain to each other, and the feelings of mutual dependence and attachments between them - together with seven years' residence abroad, listening to the most exciting debates on the sub jcet in Exeter Hall, London, and elsewhere - and now a resident of New York, where every variety of opinion is freely discussed - and, though last not least, never having had any pecuniary interests whatever involved in the question, may perhaps entitle my remarks to as much consideration as {hose of many others, who have never travelled south of Mason and Dixon's me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maryland Colonization Journal, 1847, Vol. 3 And it is humbly proposed to those who are convinced of the iniquity of the slave trade, and are sensible of the great inhumanity and cruelty of enslaving so many thousands of our fellow men every year, with all the 'dreadful and horrible attendants, and are ready to bear testimony against it in all proper ways, and do their utmost to' put a stop to it, whether they have not a good Opportunity of doing this, by cheerfully contributing, ac cording to their ability, to promote the mission proposed. And whether this is not the least compensation we are able to make to the poor Africans for the injuries they are constantly receiving by this unrighteous practice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maryland Colonization Journal, Vol. 3: October, 1845 And again, can we doubt for a moment that a man, who was mean enough to try and bribe my mate to tell a lie, in order to exonerate him from a difficulty in which, after he had got sober, he found his ambition had led him, would, when he found the vessel in his own hands, and no one to inform on him, do any and every thing to effect her condemnation this is too evident to admit of a doubt. Download or read book The Struggles of John Brown Russwurm written by Winston James and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2010-08-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Brown Russwurm (1799-1851) was an educator, abolitionist, editor, government official, emigrationist and colonizationist in the Pan-African movement. His life was one of "firsts" : first African American graduate of Maine's Bowdoin College; co-founder of Freedom's Journal, America's first newspaper to be owned, operated, and edited by African Americans; and, following his emigration to Africa, first black governor of the Maryland section of Liberia. Despite his accomplishments, Russwurm struggled internally with the perennial Pan-Africanist dilemma of whether to go to Africa or stay and fight in the United States, and his ordeal was the first of its kind to be experienced and resolved before the public eye.

Book Hoosiers and the American Story

Download or read book Hoosiers and the American Story written by Madison, James H. and published by Indiana Historical Society. This book was released on 2014-10 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.
