Book Maryland Colonization Journal Vol 1 of 1

Download or read book Maryland Colonization Journal Vol 1 of 1 written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maryland Colonization Journal, Vol. 1 of 1: Baltimore, June 15, 1841 Such is a brief abstract of the principles set forth in the resolutions of the Convention: and to carry out measures necessarily consequent thereon - the active and hearty co-operation of all classes and associations of men, and of every individual of the State, is most earnestly desired. We speak not now only as the organ of the Board of Managers, or of the association called the Colonization Society, but of the people of the State of Maryland. The people have spoken - let them be obeyed. At the shortest period possible, agents will be despatched into the several counties and districts of the State, in order to carry out fully the letter and intent of the resolutions of the Convention, and we cannot but feel that they will receive the most ready and prompt assistance in all their labours from every individual attending the late Convention. Let those who feel the deep interest they so lately evinced in the matter take measures in advance for forming auxiliaries and obtaining annual subscriptions; but more particularly in obtaining subscriptions for the packet in which so much energy and enthusiasm are felt. Let every one assist the exertions of the clergy in obtaining fourth of July contributions, by spreading information that collections will be taken up, and let none go to church that day empty handed. Even a little by each individual, when the application is so generally made, will form in the aggregate a large sum, and go far towards the purchase of the vessel. Gentlemen: In pursuance of the duty imposed on them by the resolution of the last Annual Meeting of the Maryland State Colonization Society, held at Annapolis, the Board of Managers appointed this day for the meeting of the Convention then resolved upon, and published an Address to the people of the State, calling their attention to the subject as one of deep and vital interest. The Board of Managers, in doing thus, have performed perhaps, fully, all that was required of them by the resolution above mentioned: but inasmuch as the call for a Convention grew out of what took place at the Annual Meeting, it has been thought, that it would not be unacceptable, were they now to reiterate the facts and views, which were stated at Annapolis - as well as to present such other considerations as have been suggested in the interval. The State Society exists for the purpose of promoting in Maryland, the well known objects of the Colonization scheme - the removal of the free people of colour, and manumitted slaves of the State, with their own consent, to the coast of Africa. It is independent wholly, at this time, of the American Colonization Society. This independence was the result of the convictions of many years experience of the inefficiency, so far as Maryland was concerned, of the general system. It was believed that more could be done by concentrating the efforts of the Colonizationists of Maryland within the limits of their own State, than by any probable quota of aid that could be afforded by a society in Washington, equally bound to all the other states; and it was plain, that, in anticipation of the time when the voluntary emigration of the free people of colour would be the realization of the scheme, it would be better that Maryland should have a colony of her own, open without restraint to emigrants from her borders, instead of being dependent upon other colonies, whose government might find it necessary to apportion the right of immigration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maryland Colonization Journal, Vol. 3: June, 1846 The best road that I have seen in Africa is that extending from Harper' to Mount Tubman, a distance of more than three miles. It is not a small path, but a well-beaten wagon road. On riding out to Mount Vaughan, I met an oxcart, filled with rice. Two small oxen and two donkeys were attached to the cart. This was the first thing of the kind that I have seen in this country. There are several small riding horses In the Colony, and several donkeys. This book was released on 2016-11-29 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maryland Colonization Journal, Vol. 1: December 15, 1841 It will be seen by the following letter that our Old friend George S. Brown, is now labouring in New York in the missionary cause for which he has done so much in the very field. It gives us pleasure to remark, (and no disparagement to others, ) that we know Of no one on the coast Of Africa who is so emphatically a christian missionary - the voice of one crying in the wilderness, as this same good, honest, zealous black George S. Brown. We first saw him some four or five years since in Monrovia, soon after his arrival in Africa, and supplied him with the necessaries which he might be supposed to require in his new mission station, for which he was then just setting out. And truly with him they were' necessaries indeed, the locust and wild honey would have been equal to the supply of the zealous Brown. But he required not the externals to secure his good reception and warrant him success. He possessed what was of more consequence and what a native African can most readily discover, a good, sound, honest heart, without which no man ever yet effected any thing of good among barbarians, be his preten sions and professions what they may. But the following straight-forward business letter of Mr. Brown, gives a better portrait of the man than we are able to do. But success to him, we hope he maybe long spared to dwell in the pleasant places he has redeemed from gree gree and fetish worship. 'the cause of this, near or remote, cannot be exactly ascertained without legal investigation. We shall relate in order of time all that we know with any degree of accuracy. There are opposite accounts stated particularly of almost every material fact. It appears, however, that three nights since a 'quarrel occurred between some whites and blacks, in which the whites were worsted. Night before last an affray occurred between whites and blacks again, in, which the blacks stabbed severely two young men. One we are informed, is likely to die. Another occurrence of similar kind occurred on Malester street, in which a white was wounded. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maryland Colonization Journal, Vol. 1: November 15, 1842 Not only does this state of things exist in the British W'est Indies, but in British colonies on the coast of Africa, where it has become a rule for the whites (males only reside there, ) to select some of the African females as their mistresses during their temporary sojourn. When custom sanctions such gross deviations from the path of rectitude, and when the prostitution of female virtue becomes a matter of unprincipled exultation, would it be reasonable for us to expect happiness to ourselves or families?
