Book A History of Regional Commercial Television in Australia

Download or read book A History of Regional Commercial Television in Australia written by Michael Thurlow and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-02-14 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first history of commercial television in regional Australia, where diverse communities are spread across vast distances and multiple time zones. The first station, GLV Latrobe Valley, began broadcasting in December 1961. By the late 1970s, there were 35 independent commercial stations throughout regional Australia, from Cairns in the far north-east to Bunbury in the far south-west. Based on fine-grained archival research and extensive interviews, the book examines the key political, regulatory, economic, technological, industrial, and social developments which have shaped the industry over the past 60 years. Regional television is often dismissed as a mere extension of – or footnote to – the development of Australia’s three metropolitan commercial television networks. Michael Thurlow’s study reveals an industry which, at its peak, was at the economic and social heart of regional communities, employing thousands of people and providing vital programming for viewers in provincial cities and small towns across Australia.

Book The Legends of Moonie Jarl

Download or read book The Legends of Moonie Jarl written by Wilf Reeves and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-11-22 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1964, The Legends of Moonie Jarl,, the first Australian Aboriginal children's book, was published. It was also the first Aboriginal children's book in schools at that time. Over 50 years later the stories continue to be shared among the Butchulla people. Stories that they would like again shared by all Australian children. The book tells the traditional stories of the Butchulla people, the Indigenous people of Fraser Island and the Fraser Coast, Queensland. It was written and designed by Butchulla siblings Moonie Jarl (Wilf Reeves) and Wandi (Olga Miller). The Legends of Moonie Jarl gives a deeper understanding and appreciation of Butchulla culture among the broader community, and contributes to community pride locally. These are the stories that were taught about the origin of birds, animals and plants. These are the stories which belong to all Australian children, for their own birds and animals are the subjects of legends which have been handed down since the First Time. In this book you will learn how the wallaby got its pouch, how the boomerang was invented, how the swan stretched its neck and why the flying fox hangs upside down. "My father, who was a head-man of the Butchulla, told us many things in the evenings before we went to sleep. He would tell us the stories or legends of our people, some of which are similar to the fairy tales you heard when you were young. I learned from my father many things." —Moonie Jarl

Book Tourism Expenditure by Domestic Visitors in Regional Australia 1998

Download or read book Tourism Expenditure by Domestic Visitors in Regional Australia 1998 written by Leanne Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Domestic tourism is a major contributor to the Australian economy, with domestic day and overnight visitors spending substantial sums of money on accommodation, food and shopping during their travels. Regional Australia benefits considerably from domestic tourism activity, as domestic visitors are more likely to travel to regional Australia than international visitors. Due to the link between expenditure by visitors to a region and regional economic performance, there has been unmet demand for regional estimates of domestic tourism expenditure until now. BTR has used a modelling approach, in conjunction with data from the 1998 National Visitor Survey, to develop consistent estimates of expenditure by domestic day and overnight visitors within Australia's States, Territories and tourism regions.

Book excerpt: For the first time, the First Nations story of Cook’s arrival, and what blackfellas want everyone to know about the coming of Europeans Both 250 years late and extremely timely, this is an account of what First Nations people saw and felt when James Cook navigated their shores in 1770. We know the European story from diaries, journals and letters. For the first time, this is the other side. Who were the people watching the Endeavour sail by? How did they understand their world and what sense did they make of this strange vision? And what was the impact of these first encounters with Europeans? The answers lie in tales passed down from 1770 and in truth-telling of the often more brutal engagements that followed. Darren Rix (a Gunditjmara-GunaiKurnai man, radio reporter and Archie Roach’s nephew) and his co-author Craig Cormick travelled to all the places on the east coast that were renamed by Cook, and listened to people’s stories. With their permission, these stories have been woven together with the European accounts and placed in their deeper context: the places Cook named already had names; the places he ‘discovered’ already had peoples and stories stretching back before time; and although Cook sailed on, the empire he represented impacted the people’s lives and lands immeasurably in the years after. ‘Warra Warra Wai’ was the expression called to Cook and his crew when they tried to make landfall in Botany Bay. It has long been interpreted as ‘Go away’, but is perhaps more accurately translated as ‘You are all dead spirits’. In adding the First Nations version of these first encounters to the story of Australian history, this is a book that will sit on Australian shelves alongside Cook’s Journals, Dark Emu and The Fatal Shore as one of our foundational texts.
