Book excerpt: Author of Madness, Rack, and Honey ("One of the wisest books I've read in years," according to the New York Times) and Trances of the Blast, Mary Ruefle continues to be one of the most dazzling poets in America. My Private Property, comprised of short prose pieces, is a brilliant and charming display of her humor, deep imagination, mindfulness, and play in a finely crafted edition. Personalia When I was young, a fortune-teller told me that an old woman who wanted to die had accidentally become lodged in my body. Slowly, over time, and taking great care in following esoteric instructions, including lavender baths and the ritual burial of keys in the backyard, I rid myself of her presence. Now I am an old woman who wants to die and lodged inside me is a young woman dying to live; I work on her. Mary Ruefle is the author of Trances of the Blast; Madness, Rack, and Honey: Collected Lectures, a finalist for the 2013 National Book Critics Circle Award in criticism; and Selected Poems, winner of the William Carlos Williams Award. She has published ten other books of poetry, a book of prose (The Most of It), and a comic book, Go Home and Go to Bed!; she is also an erasure artist whose treatments of nineteenth-century texts have been exhibited in museums and galleries as well as published in the book A Little White Shadow. Ruefle is the recipient of numerous honors, including an Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Guggenheim fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, and a Whiting Award. Book Talking with the Children of God

Download or read book Talking with the Children of God written by Gordon Shepherd and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2024-04-22 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grounded in direct, systematic observation by neutral observers, Talking with the Children of God is a unique study of the radical religious movement now known as The Family International. The book draws on extraordinarily candid interviews with the group's leaders and administrative staff. In revealing new information about the organization's history, beliefs, and use of prophecy, Gordon Shepherd and Gary Shepherd offer a highly detailed case study that is both an antidote to sensationalized coverage of the group and a means for understanding the transformational practices of new religious movements in general. One of the most controversial groups emerging from the Jesus People movement of the 1960s, the Family originally was known as The Children of God. Under leader David Berg, members proclaimed an apocalyptic "Endtime," shunned secular occupations, lived communally, and adopted unusual sexual practices that led to abuse scandals in the 1970s and 1980s. Following Berg's death in 1994, the organization began to dramatically alter its evangelization efforts and decision-making processes. Talking with the Children of God builds a picture of a complex organization with ten thousand core members worldwide, including details on the lives, careers, and responsibilities of the second generation and their efforts to defend their faith. The authors summarize the Family's history and beliefs as well as its controversial past. In particular, they analyze the organization's use of prophecy--or channeled revelations from Jesus and other spiritual beings--for making decisions and setting policy, revealing how this essentially democratic process works and how it shapes Family life and culture. These remarkable insights are the result of sixteen years of surveys and field observations conducted in Family member homes in sixteen countries, plus four days of face-to-face interviews with Family leaders and organizational staff. The volume also includes condensed transcripts of the interviews with analysis by Shepherd and Shepherd.

Book excerpt: It’s one of the coldest winters on record in Iowa City, Iowa, with snow still on the ground. The dean of one of the colleges is missing after Thanksgiving break, but even worse, two vans full of returning students are involved in a fiery crash. Soon the media and parents are frantically calling the university. President Barlow and his trusted administrative assistant Mary Lou stand united in their duty, but it’s not too long before things get even more complicated. The dean’s murdered body is found, state police worry that drug cartels are behind the crash, and someone has warned Mary Lou about becoming involved. The body count continues to rise, as does the number of connections between the university and drugs. It will take a cooperative effort of law enforcement, both the two-legged and four-legged kind, as well as a resourceful secretary and her family to unravel the mystery. Drawing on the sixteen years she spent as a faculty member at the University of Iowa, Margery Wolf has crafted a tale that leads readers down a path of intrigue and suspense. Trouble at the U weaves in details of the world of a large university from academic politics to relationships between a small town and professors. The mystery reflects Margery’s ethnographer’s eye in portraying different kinds of people and what makes them unique as Hawkeye state residents.
