Book excerpt: "Since its first publication in 2010, Inside Burgundy has been the benchmark reference on winemaking in the region. Jasper Morris MW is a highly respected writer and critic on the wines of Burgundy. He has been a Master of Wine since 1985, with an illustrious career behind him as a wine merchant and author. He was Berry Bros. & Rudd's Burgundy Director from 2003 to 2017. This second edition spans 800 pages, with expanded coverage of over 1,200 vineyards, 300 wine villages and 700 domaines. It offers detailed insider knowledge on the places and people that make Burgundy such a special winemaking region. Jasper gives particular attention to Burgundy's more affordable regions: Chablis, the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune and Nuits, the Côte Chalonnaise and the Mâconnais. The book includes 45 full-colour maps -- all of which have been revised and updated since the first edition -- shining a light on Burgundy's complex network of vineyards and villages. It also includes six new maps, which illustrate plot-by-plot holdings in individual Grand and Premier Cru vineyards."--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: This second volume details the continued spread of Muslim culture and peoples during the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, a period that saw the height of the powerful Ottoman, Safavid and Mughal empires, followed by their precipitous decline. The contributions of Muslims to the development of Western civilization continue to be highlighted in this chronology, most notably the impact of the Ottoman Empire on Western art and literature and its role in creating an environment in which the Protestant Reformation could take root. This volume reveals the interconnectedness of the Muslim, Jewish, African and European diasporas during this period.

Book The Island of Avalon Volume 2

Download or read book The Island of Avalon Volume 2 written by Francis Lot and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the legendary material concerning King Arthur and Joseph of Arimathea's association with Glastonbury is derived from the interpolations into William of Malmesbury's investigation into the Antiquity of Glastonbury, De Antiquitate Glastonie Ecclesia. However, it is William of Malmesbury's mention of the Island of Ineswitrin donated to Glastonbury in 601AD by a king of Devon and this same island's association to the Isle of Ictis discovered by Pytheas, from which tin was sold to the Phoenicians, which links the island to Burgh Island in Devon. Melkin's prophecy indicates that Joseph of Arimathea is buried on Avalon. It is the geometric decryption of Melkin's prophecy which shows us that Joseph of Arimathea, known as a tin merchant in Cornish legend, is still buried on Burgh Island along with the enigmatic duo fassula.

Book Illuminating the Renaissance

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas Kren
  • Publisher : Getty Publications
  • Release : 2003-07-01

Download or read book Illuminating the Renaissance written by Thomas Kren and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive and richly illustrated catalogue focuses on the finest illustrated manuscripts produced in Europe during the great epoch in Flemish illumination. During this aesthetically fertile period – beginning in 1467 with the reign of the Burgundian duke Charles the Bold and ending in 1561 with the death of the artist Simon Bening – the art of book painting was raised to a new level of sophistication. Sharing inspiration with the celebrated panel painters of the time, illuminators achieved astonishing innovations in the handling of color, light, texture, and space, creating a naturalistic style that would dominate tastes throughout Europe for nearly a century. Centering on the notable artists of the period – Simon Marmion, the Vienna Master of Mary of Burgundy, Gerard David, Gerard Horenbout, Bening, and others – the catalogue examines both devotional and secular manuscript illumination within a broad context: the place of illuminators within the visual arts, including artistic exchange between book painters and panel painters; the role of court patronage and the emergence of personal libraries; and the international appeal of the new Flemish illumination style. Contributors to the catalogue include Maryan W. Ainsworth, curator of European paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; independent scholar Catherine Reynolds; and Elizabeth Morrison, assistant curator of manuscripts at the Getty Museum. Illuminating the Renaissance is published in conjunction with an exhibition organized by the Getty Museum, the Royal Academy of Arts, London, and the British Library to be held at the Getty Museum from June 17 to September 7, 2003, and at the Royal Academy of Arts from November 25, 2003 to February 22, 2004.
