George Montague, a Marianist priest and a highly respected biblical scholar who has been involved in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal since 1970, is uniquely qualified to address this topic. Book excerpt: A life-changing guide to accessing the new life Jesus came to bring—from the bestselling author of Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World “You’ll emerge from this reading experience a changed woman.”—Liz Curtis Higgs You long to serve God with grace and strength and reflect Christ in every word and action. Yet you find yourself continually struggling to bring that vision to life in your daily walk. At our very core, every one of us is a “twisted sister” within whom the flesh and spirit are battling constantly for control. She equips you with biblical insights and practical tools to partner with Christ, inviting Him into the hidden places of your soul and giving Him full permission to redeem and renovate. Drawing on the stories of the biblical Marys (Mary, mother of Jesus; Mary, sister of Martha; and Mary Magdalene) and others whose experience with God transformed their lives, Joanna points you toward lasting personal transformation—soul-deep change that results in a complete makeover—from the inside out. Includes a fourteen-week Bible study (adaptable to twelve weeks) for both individual reflection and group discussion.

Book Hail Mary

  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2014-04-23
  • ISBN : 1136662952
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Hail Mary written by Maurice Hamington and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hail Mary? examines the sexist and misogynist themes that underlie the socially constructed religious imagery of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Maurice Hamington explores the sources for three prominent Marian images: Mary as the "the blessed Virgin," Mary, the "Mediatrix"; and Mary, "the second Eve." Hamington critiques these images for the valorization of sexist forces with the Catholic Church that serve to maintain systems of oppression against women. In challenging dominant, religious representations of Mary, Hamington surveys a variety of emerging reinterpretations of Mary. He then provides a framework for further study of "non-alienating" images of Mary.

Book Encountering Mary

  • Author : Sandra L. Zimdars-Swartz
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2014-07-14
  • ISBN : 1400861632

Download or read book Encountering Mary written by Sandra L. Zimdars-Swartz and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past two centuries hundreds of apparitions of the Virgin Mary have been reported, drawing crowds to the seers and the sites and constituting events of great religious significance for millions of people worldwide. Here Sandra Zimdars-Swartz provides a detective-like investigation of the experiences and interpretations of six major apparitions, including those at La Salette and Lourdes in France during the mid-nineteenth century; at Fatima, Portugal, in 1917; and the more recent ones at San Damiano, Italy; Garabandal, Spain; and Medjugorje, Yugoslavia, where the apparitions continue. Adopting a phenomenological approach to these "encounters with Mary"--one that is neither apologetic nor antagonistic--the author explores the tension between the personal meaning of the events for their subjects and the public appropriation of this meaning by a larger religious community. Along the way she examines the backgrounds of the seers, their willingness or reluctance to talk about the apparitions and their messages, the amount of emotional support they received from family and community as news of the apparitions spread, the reports of miracles at apparition sites, the reactions of local authorities, and the steps taken by the Roman Catholic Church in officially recognizing or rejecting the apparitions as worthy of belief. The author concludes with a survey of religious worldviews based on Marian apparitions, focusing especially on the now-popular transcultural apocalyptic nature of these messages to the modern world. Book Mary the Perfect Contemplative Carmelite Insights on the Interior Life of Our Lady

Download or read book Mary the Perfect Contemplative Carmelite Insights on the Interior Life of Our Lady written by Barbara Hughes and published by ICS Publications. This book was released on 2022-04-25 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary the Perfect Contemplative is a fresh and beautiful portrait of the Mother of God. From her immaculate conception to her bodily assumption into heaven, Mary was set apart by God as the vessel of humanity’s redemption. Thrice favored as daughter of the Father, mother of the Son, and spouse of the Holy Spirit, Mary was endowed with supernatural gifts that enabled a contemplative life of grace. Unlike us, she was conceived without sin. Yet her reliance on faith, without the full vision of God’s plan of salvation during her earthly life, makes her for us the perfect model of faith. Pondering in her heart the mysteries she encountered throughout her life, she is the perfect contemplative. Author Barbara Hughes, O.C.D.S., looks to Sacred Scripture as the primary and essential reference for her portrait of our Lady. For colorful detail she draws on two thousand years of Sacred Tradition, sourced in the writings of the church fathers, saints, and theologians. Finally, Hughes finds further depth and exquisite details of Mary’s interior life in the mystical writings of the Carmelite saints and Doctors of the Church. The saints of Carmel—the canonized brothers and sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel—are invaluable guides that help us navigate the mystical waters of contemplation and union with God, which Mary exemplifies. Saints John of the Cross and Teresa of Jesus teach us the importance of living by faith, especially when God appears to be absent or when his plans are veiled to the eyes of even the holiest people such as Mary. This book is for all of Mary’s beloved children—to offer them an intimate portrait of their Blessed Mother.

Book Mother of the Church

Download or read book Mother of the Church written by Pope John Paul II and published by Gracewing Publishing. This book was released on 1987 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mother of Church Is a collection of writings and adsresses on Our Lady by Pope John Paul II. He has already given to the Church profound and inspiring doctrine on Our Lady. In his teaching he always sees Mary as inseparably linked to Christ and as intimately associated with the life and mission of Church. This has been clear from the very begining of his Pontificate when he placed his entire future ministry under Mary's maternal care. Pope John Paul's teaching on Mary is profoundly biblical in inspiration and we see in her real, living person, with human emotions and feelings. She lives by faith, proceeding step by step along her pilgrim way, at times in the midst of darkness. She also comes across to us as someone who fully shares day-to-day human concerns, while at the same time dedicating her whole being without reserve to God's transcendent purposes. She remains within reach. She is very near to each one of us, someone whose help we can rely on and whose virtues we can always look to as a model for our lives. -- BACK COVER.
