Before, it was just Marvin and his older sister, who was boss. His new life as a new boy in town was then taking place. His future was determined by how he looked at the past. To make friends and be respected Marvin always stuck by telling no lies and always sticking with the truth. In his later years, he went to work at a silver mine called the Sunshine Mine. As he became a maintenance electrician, and had to cover the whole mine. He'd been in places and seen things that most people would have nightmares about. He was in the area where the fire started on the night shift before it happened and saw what started it that killed ninety-one men. One of the most intelligent men Marvin ever met was an officer in the SEAL Team in the US Navy. His name was Mark Shaw and he was also his neighbor. After Marvin was befriended by Mark, he was asked to do some work for him. For about twenty years, Marvin did numerous jobs for Mark: some he is at liberty to write about, but others were confidential government jobs. Mark and his Navy SEAL friends taught Marvin how to become a diver and what to do and what not to do in the water. Most of his work was underwater. Water where you could only see about six inches with a good flashlight, and the water temperature never got over 50 degrees. They made equipment for all the SEAL teams and tested and designed them other equipment. Marvin said being able to talk and work with ex-SEALs was one of the most impressive jobs he have ever had. Mark Shaw died at the age of sixty-four.

Book excerpt: From 1933 to 1941, Macon was the site of the largest archaeological excavation ever undertaken in Georgia and one of the most significant archaeological projects to be initiated by the federal government during the depression. The project was administered by the National Park Service and funded at times by such government programs as the Works Progress Administration, Civilian Conservation Corps, and Civil Works Administration. At its peak in 1955, more than eight hundred laborers were employed in more than a dozen separate excavations of prehistoric mounds and villages. The best-known excavations were conducted at the Macon Plateau site, the area President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed as the Ocmulgee National Monument in 1936. Although a wealth of material was recovered from the site in the 1930s, little provision was made for analyzing and reporting it. Consequently, much information is still unpublished. The sixteen essays in this volume were presented at a symposium to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Ocmulgee National Monument. The symposium provided archaeologists with an opportunity to update the work begun a half-century before and to bring it into the larger context of southeastern history and general advances in archaeological research and methodology. Among the topics discussed are platform mounds, settlement patterns, agronomic practices, earth lodges, human skeletal remains, Macon Plateau culture origins, relations of site inhabitants with other aboriginal societies and Europeans, and the challenges of administering excavations and park development.
