Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marvels and Mysteries of Instinct, or Curiosities of Animal Life The subject of this volume first formed the topic of a public lecture, and the interest which its marvels and mysteries then awoke, subsequently induced the Author to fill up at his leisure the sketch he had framed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wonders of Animal Ingenuity N the pleasant days when we have not long begun to look on a wonderful world peopled with beings great and small all living their busy lives after their own fashion, most of us are in some respects nearer to understanding the ways of the myriad creatures which share the earth with us than we have ever the good fortune to be in later years. Before a sparrow becomes for us only a sparrow, or we have been taught to associate the word horrid with a score of interesting and often beautiful little animals which we meet day by day, the things that happen in animal-land are not passed over with unseeing eyes; the earth is filled with romance, and we live in a true fairyland. From a few fortunate ones the spell is never lifted; for them its fascination grows stronger with time, andsthe story becomes constantly more engrossing, for it is one whose secret, though ever unfolding, can never be wholly revealed. Book Wonders of the Animal Kingdom

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wonders of the Animal Kingdom: Birds Prey, such as birds and small quadrupeds, espe cially the latter. They always kill their prey on the ground, which distinguishes them from the falcon tribe; and with their talons, which distin guishes them from the vulture. In strength, in vigour of the wing, acuteness of sight, and pow erful clutch of the talons, the Golden Eagle is superior to every other bird. In size, it is gene rally about three or four feet long, and seven or eight feet in the expansion of the Wings. This great extent of wings makes them, when folded, as long as the tail. The female is larger than the male. The plumage Of a full-grown Eagle is of a blackish-brown on the back, the tail is of a deep grey barred with brown, the head a lively golden red. The powerful tendons and muscles by which the talons are moved are protected by a thick coating of feathers, covering the feet bones down to the very division of the toes. The feet are composed of three powerful, sharp, and hooked talons, of a yellowish colour, and defended above by three horny plates or scales on the last joint of each toe. So admirable is the mechanism of the foot, that when dried, it may be made to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Marvels of the World

Download or read book The Marvels of the World written by Rebecca Bushnell and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2021-03-12 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before the Romantics embraced nature, people in the West saw the human and nonhuman worlds as both intimately interdependent and violently antagonistic. With its peerless selection of ninety-eight original sources concerned with the natural world and humankind's place within it, The Marvels of the World offers a corrective to the still-prevalent tendency to dismiss premodern attitudes toward nature as simple or univocal. Gathering together medical texts, herbals, and how-to books, as well as scientific, religious, philosophical, and poetic works dating from antiquity to the dawn of the Enlightenment, the anthology explores both mainstream and unconventional thinking about the natural world. Its seven parts focus on philosophy and science; plants; animals; weather and climate; ways of inhabiting the land; gardens and gardening; and European encounters with the wider world. Each section and each of the book's selections is prefaced with a helpful introduction by volume editor Rebecca Bushnell that weaves connections among these compelling pieces of the past. The early writers collected here wrote with extraordinary openness about ways of coexisting with the nonhuman forces that shaped them, Bushnell demonstrates, even as they sought to control and exploit their environment. Taken as a whole, The Marvels of the World reveals how many of these early writers cared as much about the natural world as we do today.

It is both mentally and physically impossible for one zoologist to know at first hand more than a small part of his subject, and for this reason full quotations, in preference to mere paraphrases, have been taken from the writings of many distinguished specialists, the sources in such cases being always indicated. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Freaks and Marvels of Plant Life; Or Curiosities of Vegetation Text-books remind us of the importance of the vegetable world in its relationship to the animal. They also illustrate the grandeur and beauty which the plant has conferred on the world. It is difficult to form any adequate conception of the vast extent and unlimited variety of vegetable life. All we can do is to pick up here and there some object of special interest, gaze at it, marvel at it, try to com prehend it, if we can, and then pass on, leaving behind us a trackless ocean of wonderful things, to be picked up by our successors, and marvelled at as we have done. It will be very long before the store house is exhausted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book How Animals Work Classic Reprint

Download or read book How Animals Work Classic Reprint written by F. Martin Duncan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How Animals Work I have carefully avoided all technical terms as far as possible, and endeavoured to tell the story of some of the wonders of Animal Craftsmanship in plain and simple language; for this little book is intended for the general reader, and not for the expert who has a store house of technical literature at his disposal. The very wealth of material from which to draw has been something of an embarrassment, where limited space has made it possible to give only a brief survey of certain forms, making it necessary to be somewhat drastic in the selection of examples. However, my guiding idea in their selection has been to place before the reader, as far as circumstances would permif, the most striking examples, and, at the same time, those which the reader can in a large number of cases see for himself, either during his rambles in the country, or by visiting any well-ordered natural history museum. If these pages should serve to awaken a new interest in the marvels of Nature and the wonderful skill dis played by such varied forms of animal life, and perhaps stimulate the reader to seek himself for further examples, then my labours have not been in vain, and this volume will have justified its existence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Animal Kingdom, Vol. 1: Based Upon the Writings of the Eminent Naturalists, Audubon, Wallace, Brehm, Wood, and Others It does not require to be pointed Out how fascinating a study Natural History in all its branches must ever be, or what a perpetual Source of interest can be found in Observing the forms and habits Of the living creatures which meet our view whatever portion Of the world we visit. Still more interesting and more instructive must be a knowledge Of that class of Animated Nature to which man himself belongs, and which contains such friends Of man as the dog that guards him, the horse that labors for him, the that supplies him food, and the sheep that furnishes him with clothing; till man had brought these under his dominion, bow inconceivably helpless he must have been! NO less instructive is it to note how the lower animals differ from or resemble Man, the crown of Nature's work; how admirably each species is adapt-cd for the loca tion in which its lot is cast, and for the uses it has to fulfil in the economy of the world; how marvellously they are endowed with power and grace and beauty. Especially in the present day is a knowledge Of the elements Of Natural History a necessary part Of our education. This work claims to minister to the educational wants of all classes, and therefore carefully avoids discussion Of unsettled points, and states nothing but incontro vertible facts. The order in which the various genera Of the Mammalia is placed has been adopted in accordance with the most eminent authorities.
