What is it about ethnicity that breaks countries apart and drives people to acts of savage violence against their lifelong neighbors? Stuart Kaufman rejects the notion of permanent "ancient hatreds" as the answer. Dissatisfied as well with a purely rationalist explanation, he finds the roots of ethnic violence in myths and symbols, the stories ethnic groups tell about who they are. Ethnic wars, Kaufman argues, result from the politics of these myths and symbols—appeals to flags and faded glories that aim to stir emotions rather than to address interests. Popular hostility based on these myths impels groups to follow extremist leaders invoking such emotion-laden ethnic symbols. If ethnic domination becomes their goal, ethnic war is the likely result. Kaufman examines contemporary ethnic wars in the Caucasus and southeastern Europe. Drawing on information from a variety of sources, including visits to the regions and dozens of personal interviews, he demonstrates that diplomacy and economic incentives are not enough to prevent or end ethnic wars. The key to real conflict resolution is peacebuilding—the often-overlooked effort by nongovernmental organizations to change hostile attitudes at both the elite and the grassroots levels.

With few exceptions, these Christians invited execution by committing capital offenses: some appeared before the Muslim authorities to denounce Mohammed; others, Christian children of mixed Islamic-Christian marriages, publicly proclaimed their Christianity. Coope investigates the origins of this "martyrs' movement" in Csrdoba, then flourishing as a center of Islamic culture. She cites the fears of radical Christians that conversions to Islam were on the increase and that still more Christians were being assimilated into Arab Muslim culture. These fears were well-founded, and the executions further divided Cordovan Christians: some believed the executed to be martyrs, others argued that these were not martyrs but fanatics and troublemakers. For their part, the Muslim authorities, disposed to be tolerant, would have preferred sectarian peace; the martyrs were given every opportunity to recant. Using Christian sources (particularly the hagiographies of St. Eulogius) and Arabic accounts to understand the complex tensions in Muslim Spain between and among the Muslim majority and Christian minority, Coope presents a valuable and fresh view of this society at the apogee of al-Andalus, Muslim Spain. This book offers a reconstruction of evangelism that acknowledges and respects women's roles and thoughts. For this purpose, the author uses a postcolonial missiological feminist perspective that pays attention to the processes, models, roles, and understanding of evangelism and mission, and encourages women's voices in witnessing the trinitarian God in the world. This study confronts evangelism with discourses of power, leadership, gender, and understanding of evangelism and mission. This book uses the historical-narrative-constructive missiological method by combining several theories to show the complexity of missionary women's narratives, the marginalization of their narratives, and constructive missiological efforts to reclaim their narratives as a model of embodied evangelism. These theories are the social women mission theory, postcolonial feminist mission theory, martyrdom theology, the biblical-reconstructive approach to Matthew, and narrative theology. The author offers the idea of "evangelism as storytelling," namely witnessing the trinitarian God through embodied storytelling of the gospel which encourages the rediscovery of witness narratives in the form of testimonials that contain the voices, roles, experiences, and understandings of women in witnessing the gospel.
